I think sensei Christian Graugart should start a tournament.
In 5 years or so it would easily rival the ibjjf as far as prestige.

With that being said are there any BIG tournament alternatives to the Ibjjf at the moment?
We've done naga and fuji (which are great) and we're gonna to AGF soon. Just wondering what eles is out there.

Christian Graugart has made it pretty clear that he's got enough on his plate and doesn't want the stress.

Besides, there's plenty of alternatives already. People just need to start going to them and stop going to IBJJF tournaments.

Yeah i saw in a couple interviews and forums where he said that.
If he ever decided to i thinks it would be big.

IBJJF will continue to be on top as long as they have that allure of being a "world champion".
I dont blame competitors for seeking out that achievement, I just wish there was a big enough tournament to rival them.

While I don't entirely disagree with you, I think there's a matter of quality as well. Other tournaments (at least the dozens of comps I've been to in various regions of the US and Europe) usually have horrible referees, at least when compared to the IBJJF. Of course I'm aware that reffing in IBJJF isn't perfect, but they do a far better job than these other smaller, regional tournaments do when it comes to quality of referees.

So, if you're like me and you're an upper-level belt competitor who is way out of your prime, looking for someone else who is also old, your weight and a brown belt, and you don't want some inexperienced ref to forget he's even reffing your match, then the IBJJF is an attractive alternative.

I really would love to see some of these smaller organizations eventually overtake or even be competitive at all with the IBJJF, but they have a long way to go.

There is TCO (Tap Cancer Out) in the US. They use Ibjjf rules and bring in ibjjf refs but since it’s a charity tournament raising money for the fight against cancer the vibe is less stressful.

They are very well run and organized, but still manage to be cheaper to compete in than other tournaments.

First off, I love TCO. But, when they came to my area a few months back, my wife and I volunteered to work the table for one of the nicest, yet incompetent refs I've ever seen. Dude was coaching someone on the adjacent mats while he was refereeing lol (among other questionable behavior).

Coincidentally I had the privilege of pulling the same ref in one of my matches at a different event a few weeks later, and this dude let our match go for almost a full minute after it was supposed to have ended, after scoring the match totally wrong.

In my one and only ibjjf match I've ever had, my referee was Oli Geddes. Night and day difference. Lmao.

I don't think these organizations really mean to have bad quality refereeing, but I also don't think they're doing much to assure quality. If they want to attract higher level competitors they really need to get on the ball.

Haha yes probably one of the most experienced referees in the world right there :D

UK also has: Grapplefest All Stars BJJ
Outside of IBJFF the UK also has grappling industries, UAE events, BJJ 24/7 and Empire as well as Nagas as well as adcc once a year plus the British Opens and Southern events I've heard good things about like London Cup and Hereford open. So basically plenty of choice.

Grapplefest is great but it's a sub only show so not for every athlete as a competitor but fabulous to watch in the same vein as polaris.

Got to admit though as an aging female grappler ibjjf is a great option and my fav still as a competitor although more expensive and other issues mentioned etc

I agree with Christian here....if you want to rival the IBJJF in terms of competition then go forth and make happen. I was asked recently to purchase a kids only tournament and declined outright as event coordination is not something I'm good at nor want to be. It sounds like an AWFUL, AWFUL job. I didn't quit one career that I hated to start up another that I hate.

Oh, and by the way, EVERY event owner thinks they will smash the IBJJF and rule the world and be rich and famous. Most just fail outright. Some have been around a good amount of time and probably make some profit. But most barely scrape by.

Same as MMA product line people. Everyone thinks they will be the next Tapout. Even Tapout isn't Tapout anymore!!

I really enjoy competing at Grappling Industries as it is a good way to get a lot of experience since you're probably getting at least 4-5 matches as a blue or purple belt, often more. There are definitely fewer competitors at the brown/black ranks but that is an issue in just about any tournament system.

Not a fan of the head guy. I reffed once at one his events and would never, ever do it again or recommend anyone do it.

Hmm. That's surprising. I started going to his tournaments when they were localized in Montreal back in 2010. I had many a conversation with him, and all of his tournaments I've been to were really well organized. That being said, I've never worked for him.

Right, it was how he treated the staff. Imagine the worst boss you've ever had. The one who clearly thought that just because he was in charge that gave him the right to treat you like a piece of garbage so that he could satisfy his ego. Now times that by a factor of 10. It was so bad I almost got in his face at one point because of how he was talking to the other refs and staff about getting the mats put on his trailer.

I will miss US Grappling. Best people ever all the way through that organization.

So I put on my first Jiu Jitsu tournament today.
Small in house get together, about 21 participants with 5 gyms being represented.
It was fun and exciting, but super stressful lol

Congratulations! I loved putting on competitions back in the days (probably did 50+) but it’s exhauuuuusting. Couldn’t imagine running this on a large/world wide scale.

Great for sleep though!!
