Hello fellow BJJers.

what's the word of mouth guards?

My tendency is the smaller the better since we're not really getting any uppercuts or tackles.

I like to use the ones meant for bruxism off eBay, what are your thoughts?

Cheers.

Never use them. Even in combat jiu-jitsu I don't use a mouth guard.

Was actually kinda cool one time when my opponent saw I wasn't going to wear one he took his out also. lol

if you keep your mouth closed you won't bite your tongue. If you can't help but to breathe through your mouth while training then maybe you should use one

Sisu. Also I wear it mostly to negate the damage from lips being grind against teeth.
Only thing I don't like is every time I get accidentally elbowed or kneed in the face I get a canker sore for like 4 days. That's all I think about when I get hit in the face, don't even care about getting hit in the face it's the annoying ass canker sores that follow.

Just don't clamp down on them and forget to breathe properly through the nose. Something I say to all new guys wearing mouth guards.

I didn't wear a mouth guard for a while. Then I got elbowed in the mouth so hard was spitting blood for 10 minutes and almost got my front teeth knocked out. I've worn one ever since. I tell everyone it's like a condom. You only really need then the one time you forget to bring any.

I agree… super thin and easy to breath and talk with.

I have several chipped teeth and a few caps/crowns from injuries to my teeth from grappling (mostly people accidentally kneeing me in the face or the group next to me running into us). I strongly advocate to wear mouth guards.

Sisu is the most comfortable I've found, but I ended up getting a dental abscess despite wearing one. I haven't run into that issue with the thicker, albeit less comfortable boil-and-bite mouth guards so I tend to stick to Shock Doctor or similar at this point.

I'm a big fan of Impact mouthguards. They are cheap, and you can make them look cool etc, but more importantly I could actually breath, talk and drink water with the thing in my mouth, so there's that...

I always wear a mouthguard when free rolling. A properly moulded and fitted guard from a dental lab is essential though. The one I use is so light and fits so perfectly I don't even notice it. I don't recommend an off-the-shelf or boil n' bite version that may or may not fit exactly. The first heavy knee to the point of the jaw will see you thanking yourself for your innate wisdom. :)

If you are going to compete a custom mouthguard is a great investment.. My front teeth are not mine I lost them due to a headbutt in a Lethwei match years ago. A couple hundred dollars vs a few thousand

Guys seriously to avoid canker sores?

Just grappling not including striking I have seen countless chipped teeth. broken teeth that need to be capped and around a dozen cases where teeth came out. Hey if you don't want to wear them cool but anyone who advises others not to is a tool

I have a nasty canker sore for like a week now its massive lol literally every time i get hit in the face I get one.

People should wear one. I just personally don't like them and will be an idiot. I accept the consequences for my ability to breathe better and not have to bother with them even if it means some dental shit in the future. But I admit it's dumb on my part...I'd just rather be comfortable while rolling and deal with whatever accidents happen.

Buy any SISU version instead, you'll be able to breath, speak and drink easily. Aero 1.6mm version works fine, there's also a new cheaper version (Sisu GO 1.6mm) which is shorter but should be sufficient to protect front teeth (which is the most fragile part imo). Good luck.

You'll also need denture cleanser (pills for cleaning fake teeth) for daily/weekly cleanse.

Over 15+ years of running a gym and grappling, I think I've seen ONE tooth injury and that was like 10 years ago. (FOR THE WHOLE GYM)...

Maybe we're doing something wrong... (also everyone wears mouthguards).

Some places train a bit more reckless or hard or whatever you want to call it, the only time I take a hard shot anymore is if I go into reverse kesa against a beginner without blocking the hip.

I have a very efficient distance non pressure game so I don't really take hardly any damage anymore. I am willing to take my chances. I compete enough and I don't train like it's competition. I train to use the least amount of energy possible in every scenario so if your not going near full speed you take much less risks and damage. I slow thing down instead of speeding things up. That's my strategy though. Some people just like to go balls to the wall and try to out cardio and out heart other people which works as well. I prefer the slow strategic and psychological mental tap. I want people to still have space to move but feel claustrophobic at the same time.

If I ever decided to wear a mouth guard it would just be training with strong spazzy beginners that use to wrestle or something then take it out right after. lol

Maybe your doing something right..

About a year ago I was at a friends school in Vegas and he was rolling with one of his guys getting ready for and event and caught an inadvertent knee with 10 second left and his front tooth. Like I said I tell people it's optional but would always advise to err on the side of caution if someone asks me advice.

My dentist made my mouthpiece and I have to pull hard to get it out and don't even notice it

I wear a mouthguard custom made by my dentist. I love it.
How much do those things cost?

I might get one if I ever decide to learn to wrestle lol

Impact ones (and no not sponsored or anything by them) are 40 and dentist made and custom to your mouth. My old dentist who made mine for my BB test years ago (14) normally charged $250.

No idea as it was covered by my insurance. I think it was like $250CAD.
All I had to do was go in and they used some laser and a computer gadget that mapped my mouth.
A week later I had an amazing mouthpiece.

I really like the SISU 3D. It was a lot easier to get a good fit with that vs. the standard flat version.

If you have dental insurance, your dentist will likely be able to make you one as a "night guard" for free. Custom molded. That's how I got mine after biting through my tongue 8 years ago and it's still in use today.

I wore a mouth guard constantly when I was doing MMA. Not as much now that I'm mostly focusing on BJJ. I wore the Tapout boil and bite years ago. They were cheap and worked. But I also recommend the Sisu for jiu jitsu. Thin enough to be able to talk, but enough protection to stop the accidental elbows and knees from causing too much damage.

I’m a fan of Damage Control. Their $20 boil n’ bite is sufficient for sparring but comfortable enough for rolling. In my experience, it is just as comfortable and form fitting as full customs at significantly higher price points.

By comfortable, I mean I’ve accidentally made it to my car with it still in my mouth.

guardlab.com are nice. They have some boil and bite they are semi custom. Apex and Apex lite are very nice. You can talk, drink, and breath without issues.
