Hi,
just discovered how good contact lenses work with my skateboarding and surfing. Its a new life.
Anyone has experience with using contact lenses on the mats?
I guess its no problem to wear them while rolling.
Pros and Cons anyone ?

I have had multiple contacts get knocked out of my eye(s) while rolling. Sometimes a sleeve or limb will drag across your face just right and pull the lens out or roll it behind your eye. My suggestion would be to bring your glasses or a back-up pair of contacts in your gear bag. Or some solution if you can manage to salvage a contact that falls out.

if you dont mind losing it. Used to try to wrestle with my contact in when i was younger and it worked for a bit until i started getting more and more into it. either i would sweat so much i would rub my eye and it would come out or now when training all it will takes is a piece of clothing to get brushed through you eye and snacth it out. happens way more htan you think.... Honestly.. DOnt really need to SEE when you rolling. i

I use them and in 5 years only lost one once. Nice experience while trying surf with very small waves too.

Ive had far too many time of getting an abrasion on my eye to even consider it. I am considering the eye surgery though.

I don't think I've lost a contact while rolling. I do not bring anything for backup either. Don't need to see too good to be underneath side control anyways.

Had a mate get one of his contacts knocked out while rolling with me. First time I noticed it happening to him, but he trains 3x a week on a good week. Have you considered LASIK?

So my solution is the have some sport safety glasses made with my prescription. I wear it during the instruction and the drilling during class. Then take them off for rolling/sparring. Be sure to pick up some anti-fog coating (I use Zip-Wax) so you can see while in a full sweat.
I got mine here:

Get a recent script from your eye doc and you can upload it in the site. The turnaround is very good and they have great customer service.

I like to wear deez bad boyz. I can see all of your moves ahead of time using advanced mind reader technology. Just try to pass my guard, sweep, or even just pick me for a roll. I already know…I saw.

Hi,
As I started this thread I have to admit
I wear contact lenses all the time now.
Even when in the beginning of this thread the answers did not point out to do so.
One time one came off but that was no problem compared to roll without them.
It’s such a great difference between not wearing lenses and wearing them. The ground and the distance to the ground is so much More visible. The whole 3D effect of seeing with Both not just with one eye is huge.
It’s the use of my hands, the distance to the ground and the overall feeling where i am in the room That makes the difference. Now that I’m used to it I even hit the ground with my fingers when not wearing them. That hurts and sucks.
If somebody grinds through your eye with his Gi it’s not a great feeling when this happens with lenses there is nothing different to when it happens without
I never Went to the mirror and even looked at it. I just blink or adjust the thing with my finger on the closed eye lid and go on.
My opinion after 1.5 years rolling with lenses : it’s super good and doesn’t effect me negative at all .. saying this as an blue belt who gets pounded each and every time rolling

One thing I will warn you about contract lenses is that you need to bring contact solution with you to practice. One of my training partners got his contact knocked out during a roll and put it back in only to get a pretty legit cornea scratch.

Basic contact hygiene practice would say putting a contact in that got knocked out and hit the nasty mats covered in sweat, saliva, blood, etc. would not be a smart idea. That corneal abrasion was easily preventable by just throwing that contact away or cleaning it prior to re-inserting it. I'm not saying I haven't done it, but there's cause and effect in every decision made.
I wear contacts every time I train. Very seldom have I had any issues. I've had the occasional lost contact and I keep a couple spare sets in my bag for those instances. Carrying solution is a great idea - I don't, because I elect to bring spare contacts (I wear dailys) and will simply wash my hands before putting the replacement set in prior to driving home after class. If I lose a set during training, I just go without the rest of that session. Thankfully that's very rare.

One of our guys had LASIK surgery and wore the ol' rec specs to protect his eyes instead of missing like 3 months of training. Seemed to work well for him.

Honestly dude I had lasik and it lasted about 2 years...but now my eyes have reverted back. So its a solid fix, but not a 100% permanent one for all those who get it.

If you bring a replacement set of contacts to drive… why not just throw on your regular glasses. Thats what I ended up doing. Honestly man, contacts are a pain in the ass.
