Timmy has responded thusly, right after the NYT article came out.
Wrong time, wrong message, Timmy.

I have said it before, I am not sure that all these "belt ranks" and "martial arts" traditions, do not do more harm, than good.
If the net result is people not questioning, questionable authority figures, and not calling bullshit, where there is bullshit,
and running sex predator or financial scams,
then all that martial arts crap traditions and larping, should have been chucked.
Are we raising vikings that think for themselves,
or sheep, that line up to be slaughtered, on command?
I'd rather have people who tell me to fuck off and think for themselves, under my lineage,
and will be able to stand on their own two feet after I was gone,
than the reverse, myself.

I'm not sure if it's really that deep, but I personally identify with your sentiment.
The level of idol worship in bjj, on average, is a little weird.

And this is the real problem I think. Not really sure this is unique to BJJ though, and I also don't think it's really hindered by having a central governing body. There was a huge sex scandal in Japan with the national Judo team not too long ago, to say nothing of the judo teacher who Seoi Naged a kid to death. Giving people this kind of power dynamic, where you need them to move on always presents this danger.

I have always hated the cult of personality that seems to surround martial arts. Let's face reality teacher, Black belt whatever we are not "special" we know and can execute techniques but this does not make us good people. The thing that truly gets me is after exposure the closing of ranks and the defense of the indefensible .
I am sorry but I believe in zero tolerance. Anyone who uses a position of perceived authority to take advantage especially of children is unforgivable.

I don't want to blame anything on "culture" per se but unfortunately Brazil seems to be in these regards where northern America and Europe might've been 20 years ago.

Sounds like Cyborg realized this was the third public strike against Fight Sports and finally did something. The FS hotline reminded me of the whole SafeSport helpline (https://hotline.rainn.org/safesport) - though that one at least also has a link to redirect you to 911 and is actually through RAINN which is a recognized resource for victims of sexual assault in the USA. Having said that, it seems like an NGB or registry that would let people easily identify disavowed instructors would be an important step to being able to address this.

To have loyalty to someone because you are "under" them is crazy. If the leader is doing things you find wrong you should leave, but the hierarchy is a powerful thing.

I have no problem being loyal to those above me but not blindly. It's been discussed in other forum topics about not wanting to promote certain types of people and representing us. This should apply up the hierarchy as well and not just in martial arts.

To be loyal to someone I have to respect them. There is behavior that would make me lose all respect for them and ANYONE who condones or rationalizes sexual abuse loses any and all respect from me.
Honestly I have a code of conduct of my own that is a little odd and doesn't really match societies but I have some hard and fast lines in the sand and that is one of them
