What do we need to watch while playing half guard to avoid being caught by Knee bars & Foot locks? Is there any instructional that can help explain this?

The modern game does a lot of back stepping which opens up a ton of leg locks. Sadly the only counters I have are mostly timing related ... which sucks when you're going against someone fast. If I'm early, I work the jedi mind trick, check Lachlan Giles half guard instructional for details. You have to really trap the inside knee. If I don't get that, I have to start initiating reverse half guard sweeps while uke is back stepping (mostly by controlling uke's inside leg). If I miss that, I figure 4 my leg that is about to be attacked and then start playing leg lock defense (which mostly results in tapping :( )

Just found this, how to address it while it is happening for the sweep setup:

What would be a non-timing-related counter to ANYTHING really?

One's where a simple grip changes the dynamic for instance. Or one's where you don't have to rush as you slow down the position. The back step leglocks come pretty quickly.

Always have upper body control from bottom half. This negates most leg attacks. If you have shitty body control you will always lose the leg game.

Lockdown also stops most backsteps as it controls the hip.

Holding a closed guard for dear life.
I've successfully implemented that in a few IBJJF rules matches :)

Don't be lazy with your top leg.

Don't be lazy with your bottom leg.

Follow the opponent's chest and stay close to it.

Keep these in mind and the opponent shouldn't have a great chance to get past your knee line for attacks.

not specific to half guard, but I found it to be a good breakdown to help you understand what makes foot locks work and not work

Opponent going for leg attack when passing is an opportunity to get top without having to work for a sweep :)

I might suggest that for next Globetrotters camp as a topic:
"How to keep closed guard like Helio - till your opponent falls asleep."

I think to this day the following holds true: no Estonian's closed guard has been opened in competition by their opponent ;)

Not even by other Estonians?

Well, local whitebelts going against each other doesn't count. But in general yes - if an Estonian does not want their closed guard opened, it won't happen. The hardest to deal with are the newschool-oldschool smash openings like Wim loves.

Now I'm curious. Why? Attitude? Technique adjustments? Estonian wrestle-jitsu which I respect very much?
Nothing to do with wrestle-jitsu :D The spirit is anti-that.

In the end it's stalling in the best tradition of Helio that has it's only real use for to be used to keep safe point advantage under IBJJF ruleset when necessary.

It's just a systematic set in regards how to counter closed guard breaks in the gi.

New Challenge. Look for an estonian and try to open their guard!
It'd be hard to find Estonians who would like to engage in prolonged closed guard stallfests these days :D

We have changed the ways of teaching as well, hardly ever spend time for staying on closed guard bottom anymore... So I guess the statement doesn't stand anymore :D

"How to open every Estonian closed guard", my future class for BJJ Globetrotters Spring Camp.

Brought to you by the guy who taught:
- attacks from the closed guard right before Wim Deputter's class on stacking into the closed guard,
- sweeps from side control right before Priit Mihkelson's class on being unsweepable,
- ground and pound right in front of a UFC fighter.
