Saw this in another thread and thought it could use it's own, since I've had this debate a few times during my career.
Should instructors keep a social distance to your students?
I've heard this and had it recommended several times, but I personally disagree strongly. I believe a major factor in the success of my own academies over the years has been the genuine social relationships between people, across students and instructors.

It is possible to have a healthy genuine friendship with your students. Why not?
People are people. Do what you want.
Who cares what other people think anyway.
I just won't sit around drinking with them.
Mostly because I am 53 and they are all young folks.
I wouldn't do that with non BJJ people their age either.

All my closest friends are from Jiu Jitsu and that includes my instructor. We had epic parties with instructors coming for seminars and became friends consequently. Probably part of the lifestyle that I have benefitted most from.

I can't teach and keep a "distance" from my students. The shared bond of hard training tends to bring people close together. Then again I am not in the business of martial arts to me its a hobby and passion

Why not? I am more than happy to have some of my trainingpartners (i don't call them students anyways) as friends, too and vice versa. It depends on the individual. In general I see absolutely no problem with that.

i can't even think about not being friend with my student/people i teach and train with
as an associative club, I see us as a group of friends who train together and my role is to organize the training and teach technique.
so, maybe trade-oriented gyms can see things differently.
I would like to know their exact motivation

IM not the main instructor at my gym but I am A instructor. I am friends with a bunch of the guy in the gym and sometimes we hang out during NON gym hours but not often as you would do your regular close circle. But we also Travel together every year ( twice a year at least) that a lot of my close friends don't do. My main instructor and I are close friends, I know his family and parents etc. but he doesn't really mingle with the other students unless they've been around for years because he doesn't want to show any type of favoritism if he shows up to one persons event an not the other. so he elevates that whole thing and drops the burden on me which is fine because I like being social with my guys and gals. I also get along with just about everyone that i come in contact with So I'm like the connection between everyone know everyone else.
