Thoughts on including an optional “Profession” section on each profile

One very impressive trait of the BJJ community is that practitioners come from all walks of life. In a given class, one may roll with accountants, Cybersecurity experts, military members, tradesmen, students, nurses, doctors, etc. It’s an incredible brotherhood that draws people from every part of society.
As such, I’ve found training partners that can offer help in numerous circumstances based on their trade or background. This is a community of professionals linked by a common bond who can offer advice or referrals to their fellow members.
What are your thoughts on including a searchable field in each profile that allows the option to include a description of the user’s profession? I feel this would, in the future, allow users to seek advice or referrals from members of this community based on their professional experience. Jobs, technical assistance, or mentoring. The possibilities are endless!

While it's nice that people want to share, I find exchanging this type of information tiresome. I really don't care if you're a doctor or how much education each of us have because the only thing that matters in Jiu Jitsu is Jiu Jitsu. I actually find that responding to people about my profession creates a distance so I always try to keep it vague and polite.

As optional info, why not, if many find value in it, but I'm very much on board with Jon on this one: I actually like it that I have no idea what most of my training partners do for work, and that most don't know what I do. If we end up hanging out outside the gym, then probably sure, yeah, but on the mats it doesn't matter, and it's the one place where your education or career doesn't define you one bit.

To be honest, most cybersecurity, government, and true special operator types here in the US won't (or can't) post that information. We run into this all the time at my gym when taking pictures. There is a large number of people I have to blur out of the photo or they can't be included. I can't even list all of our coaches and instructors.
We had to go through hoops to get one of our Black Belts added as a business partner and publicly announce that he was a partner and coach. He's the Chief Information Office for the Federal Communications Commission and former Deputy CIO for the Department of Agriculture. It's very tricky.

Hey Phil! We aren't too far, maybe 20 miles or so. There's also a Yamasaki Academy in Springfield, VA as well which would be closer. But we would love to have you come down anytime man. We should work out a way for you to do a workshop or seminar if you are in the area often. I like to make sure if a Black Belt or pro fighter visits we find a way to get you paid.

I feel like people can already put this information in the "description" section of their profile if they care to. I do.

It’s really not as tricky as people may think. If your title and name together is sensitive, you don’t publish it. Some people just prefer to stay low key.

I've never been invited; my job started just before the pandemic set in (I was pregnant at the time). But I have two left feet and was never any good at anything physical.
My sister is 5'8". It's funny, she often gets people remarking on how "tall" she is. And she's like, "But my sister..." :-D

I think there is enough workplace cringe on LinkedIn, we don’t need to bring that over here.

I agree, let's stick with Jiu Jitsu here and if people want to add any additional information, they are free to use the description field.

I'm sure my boss considers me a true "special" operator, but for those James Bond types I'm sure they have some sort of online presence; it's just mostly bullshit. Like when people ask me what I do, I generally reply, "other duties as required."

Nope. It's an aggregation of data issue. Taking pictures specifically at a place that has a posted schedule of classes let's them know where you are at any one given time.
Not the same thing as posting random pictures or random places at random times.
