Merry Christmas,
Anyone got any experience with programs to use sports/BJJ as a platform for police and law enforcement agencies to connect to the youth and create relation and respect between the public and the police?
Have an idea that for youths to meet officers threw open mat sessions, classes and meet other youths from different background and academies could be a interesting way to bond with the public, and fight racism and create understanding. A nice way to meet local officers in a different arena and make som bonds.
Something like open mind - open mat - fight prejudices

Any thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea but I can also see where some might use it just as an opportunity to choke a cop.

Sure, but don't really consider that as the biggest problem in the age group 14-18. We have some good cops at my academy, one blackbelt, female purple, male purple and me and some other seasoned bluebelt. Would be interesting to bring in youngsters from other academies one Saturday a month on one of the citys matspaces. Create a place to meet and bond between academies, break down som images and illusions of other same aged student. Meet and get to know some officers, being able to know more about them, talk ask questions etc. Later on maybe do intros in the same age group and inform them about the different academies and maybe get them back into organized activity again. I think many would benefit of getting back to sport in that age to stay out of trouble.
Dont know about BJJ but guess similar things have bee tried around the world with football, basketball or other sports.

i teach in a local youthclub, but the session are open to everyone
the goal is to keep them busy (and tired :-D ) and give them values by example from the older people
this, after several years, lead to have police officer, prison officer, military, etc, on the mat with young people (and some with...bad habits, you know...)
we didn't do it on purpose, it just happened
i even had the case of one guy rolling with the policeman that arrested him in the past....what i didn't know at the time...
they never said anything to me until joking about it in front of everybody...was weird AF at the beginning but the policeman was a smart man!!!

Cheers Oliver, couple of questions,
How do you solve that without being a competitor to the local clubs,? (if there is any close by) I don't want to try to compete ore create a own club, but give a additional meeting point. If that makes any sense. And if it works out by having kids in that nota re familiar with the sport, help them get in to a academy that can fulfill there journey.
When its open to everybody, mostly No-Gi? and teaching techniques? People with zero to noen experience tend to go crazy when rolling. and then comes injuries and accidents. How do you prevent that?

hah, context is different here
when i created the club at first (2007) there was no bjj or grappling in the area.....and the youthclub was not a choice at first, but the only place with free time and tatami to train. (i offered them to open the class in exchange of a low price)
so, for my student, we are their own club, but we are friends with other club so everybody is welcome and we get to train in their gym too (me and others instructors respect affiliation for promotions...this kind of things need only real talking/ communication and being clear with each other), even mma guys come to train to lvl up their ground game etc
we do both gi and no-gi (we keep/collect/fix old gi's in the gym for people coming to try or can't afford one)
i got a young guys stop procrastinating and worked only to buy a cool gi at first....sometime BJJ is like magic on them :-D
about crazy rolling beginners...i'm used to advice them about doing this, because we got some beast that can crush them easy and the fact that some local mma names train with us HELP a lot!
also i explain that insurrance/affiliation do not work if they injury in a trial class.
i don't know how it work in your country but i have an insurance for people affiliated.
about technique, i teach what i teach and they jump in the train :-D (joke aside = one purple/blue work basics with them a few month)
if you want to create a meeting point, IMHO you'd better talk with instructors in your area about your project and being clear about not taking any students etc.
i wish you good luck

In Norway we have free healthcare, so should be covered. Yep, I would need to talk to the different academies before trying this. But would love to have some different thoughts, and maybe experience from others to have some more "facts" to back it up. If its going to be a reality I also need to present it to the city council, to get some hours at one off the arenas owned by them. But before reaching out to any of them I want to create a "package" to present for them to get them onboard.
So there is no profit in this idea, but maybe support to get matspace once a month, and then take it from there.

Well this could go well or it could be a disaster.
As a 20+ year veteran of law enforcement I try to keep an open mind, but on the other hand I've seen some terrible stuff that have molded my personality as a realist. Sure you can bond with a few but you could teach a complete dickhead to choke the shit out of someone on the streets.
This is a tough one for sure.

I might be a bit naiv, and I see your point. Ive been working as an officer since 2007. My main thought wasn't to start a academy for young people, but to reach out to those already in the spor. To act together with the community and maybe breake some barrieres and myths between young kids and law enforcement. Like a open mat scenario were you meet kids from other academies. No politics or competition.

It takes so long to actually learn BJJ that most shitheads would likely change and adopt the social norms of the gym before they got to that stage. Especially if the programming was set up specifically to engage with troubled youth and reform them.

Yes if they last that long in bjj they might get reformed.
Usually shitheads, young and old, don't have the patience to learn.
