I have a few ideas of my own of what makes a great training partner, I'll post once there are a few contributions (in an attempt to not anchor the discussion), looking forward to everyone's take on it!

cheers

This is a great question.
Coming from a striking martial arts background (Muay Thai and Taekwondo) before starting the BJJ Journey, I may see things in a bit of a different light than others.
I have always taught my students to ask their partners this question. “ hit me as hard as you want me to hit you“.
Many people do not understand their own power. But they do understand the power is being used against them.
I think that what kind of partner you want depends on where you’re at in your journey.
If you are a heavy competitor, then you will probably want people who are going to push you to your limits on each session in order to gain that high level of intensity. If you are training for self-defense primarily then you are going to want a large variety of partners from many different weight classes skill levels and abilities to test outYour capabilities in all situations.
If your primary goal is fitness with a purpose then you are looking for people who are not going to hurt you most likely. Although, good luck with that one in jujitsu!

Definitely each to their own, most times I have found that you need a variety of different training partners.

Sometimes you need to train with lower belts that allow you to dictate the pace and try new things, where you can be a bit more creative in your attack.

Other times you need to train with beasts that will push you and expose holes in your game.

I use both for different reasons. However, I love physicality and I love to test myself.

I find rolling with bigger and more technical guys a great way to improve your game. You will learn through the adversity and if you apply your mind to the problems presented it will form a great platform for honing your A game and your defensive abilities.

But I agree with Shannon's comment, give what you want to receive. I teach my students that, if you want to go hard, go hard, but expect the same in return. If you want to flow then communicate that and give that energy to your training partner.

A perfect training partner for me is one that can mimic the responses you need to perform techniques right during drilling. It’s a perfect partner if the communication works and we can have competitive rounds sparring or technical focused rounds or give and take play rounds. A perfect training partner is adaptable, focused, fun and willing to learn and finds all aspects of training necessary.

It's funny I tell my guys you need 3 types of partners.

1. The guy you are better than and can truly work new offensive concepts and moves in comfort.
2. Your nemesis and it is usually your best friend in class you guys bring out the best in each other and every roll is a dogfight
3. The hammer or guy that it seems you just can't snag anything clean on

The combination of the 3 is what I believe most students need.

I prefer a technical tough as nails partner that when I am playing with new concepts he takes advantage and when I am getting ready for competition he gives me a war.

I come form the Lethwei attitude that ass kickings gets you where you need to be

Any person around my size who is willing to show up regularly at the same time each week and drill with me. Sadly that's been difficult to find, I'm still looking after 8 years of running a BJJ club.

Even offering people free training in exchange for regular drilling hasn't worked. Hopefully my training partner unicorn will appear one day. ;)

One who can take me to the "Goldilocks Zone". I think the misconception about BJJ is because there are no striking, you can go 100% most of the time. A partner who can give me resistance but also allow me to go through my positions and techniques, while keeping me challenged with techniques. That's my man. But very rare to find them. Or I have to take them on the ride instead.

It's a (drill) date! I've been planning to run a camp with Mike V in the US for a while: the pandemic threw a wrench in that, but hopefully I can finally do that next year. It would therefore probably be at his gym in Madison. :D
