Anyone know how a 5 man bracket in IBJJF works for colored belts. I’ve read that there are 3 first round byes. If this is correct how do they determine who gets the byes?

IBJJF has a point system based upon how many points you have gotten in that exact belt and weight division.
Whoever has the most points will be guaranteed the byes. If no one has any point's then it will be random.

So the three byes is true?

Yes I believe that is how it will work.
They do everything they can to provide the least amount of matches possible.

I just competed in a 5-man division a couple months ago. Myself and one other guy were the low dudes on the totem pole (i.e. no accumulated IBJJF points). Our match was considered a "qualifier", and the other 3 guys got a bye. I beat my first guy (the qualifier guy) but lost to my next guy (who had a bye automatically... he was also the one in my division with the most tournament points). I shared a third place spot on the podium with the guy who lost to the eventual second place guy...
Hope this helps?
I competed a bunch in the early 2000's, and this is how they did every BJJ tournament from what I remember. The round robbins and other formats are "newer" to the BJJ scene.

yeah if its over 5 they will do a qualifier match for one of the newest competitors.
i just did the Atlanta open and it has three people in my bracket and we did a round robin. ( which is new because they didn't do that before when I was competing at a lower belt).
in the Open they had 7 people, so one person got a bye and the other had to fight. which as long as you one your first match it would guarantee you a medal.

Yes, this is a new thing. Interesting. Had no idea they started doing this.

How else would they do it?
You need 4 people in the semis. So if you start with 5, you need to lose 1 person, so only 1 match in round 1.
If there’s 125 people in a bracket. 123 of they get a bye.

thats not totally right but that the actual concept. they split the brackets into groups and so it will end up being like 5 groups so it would be like a 25 man bracket per group. so it would be like 7 byes per group.

I was just pickImg random numbers tbh. It would be only 3 byes. (groups of 31/32)
The grouping don’t change the numbers of byes. You have to get to the next lower 2^x.
129 means getting to 128 for rd2. So only one match in rd1. Ie 127 byes (the group with32

Yes, with a 5 person bracket, 3 get byes. I just had this happen at the Miami open this weekend in my division.
