Hi,
Did you think that there must be exceptions for people who train much more than others, to pass the belts faster ? A guy who train two times a day should he have the same time between belt than the guy who comes at his best twice per week ? I ask that because there are a few fighters well know for their celerity like Bj Penn who took 3 years to become a Black Belt and then became the first foreigner world champion in Black belt division.....with the actual system use by IBJJF, he would not be allowed to compete or in blue belt division maximum.... that's crazy.
In my opinion, it must be in charge of the instructor to deliver the belt when he thinks the guy is ready, at the end, if he did wrong that's on his reputation....
For me it took like 12 years to get my Black Belt, so i'm on team turtle this time.

It should always be about progress vs the belt. I have been a purple belt for 7 years and have people that started well after I received my purple belt that are the same rank as me, with some already brown belts and black belts. It is just happens.

Exceptions should be made. But if promotion is being consider faster than usual it should be abundantly clear that they are ready.
If it is abundantly clear then they shouldn't be made to wait for some IBJJF term limits unless the student's goals are to win some world or pans championship.
I've been offered purple by a few people but they are not my promoting instructor and I still got a few gaps to fill. Belts are weird man. Be better if it was just like nogi and when you competed you just signed up as beginner, intermediate or advanced. Make things a lot simpler.
Just make everyone where a white belt for student or dark blue belt for instructor and be done with it. I think people would be a lot happier and less drama.
