I've been training for about 6 years consistently now, i usually bounce back... but im getting old and now i have an elbow, a knee, and an ankle that just doesnt seem to heal. I want to compete as a purple belt eventually, but not if it will make them worst. Is there any advice from some broken black belts out there? The doctors said they're sprained but its been 5 months and i still cant make a fist, or run.

Something in my upper back/lower neck. Have to avoid certain things or I feel a slashing sensation. Something, maybe the forearm muscle torn around my left elbow. It's visible and I feel it aching some times.

Lower back and hip shit. I have a bjj physio friend who has over 50 bjj related patients. Number one issue he deals with is lower back related.

Lower back is a bad one. I've had surgery on mine. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

As you get older your nutrition and sleep become more important than ever if you want to stay on the mat. Set designated rest days. Get a good flexibility/stretching program. Yoga works well here. In my opinion kettlebells work well for strength program for jiu-jitsu.

And your only 30... it started around 28 for me. Things stopped healing around that time, Soon as I hit 35 needed more recovery time and had to switch how I train.

Sometimes less is more.
Can't believe you added an injury list. Now I can check my opponents who are registered on this site for all their injuries if they add them lol

I would speculate a large number of injuries come from overuse. Meaning we train too often. If people would cut back on the quantity of training they would give the body time to heal. I would rather train less and feel good then the opposite. I only train 3 -4 days per week. Non consecutive days. I’ve done this since 2013. I’ve never gotten worse. Plus I’ve never been injured since. The only break I’ve ever taken was when I had strep in 2017( out 10 days). That’s the longest break I’ve taken.

Cauliflower ears and a hammer finger. They're never going away, but they make good stories.

I have some hip pain that just wont seem to go away. Makes certain guard positions painful. Its been over a year so I suspect its some form of hip arthritis or degenerative problem. There was no initial injury, keep forgetting to mention it when I see the doc too.

Hip pain can also happen with muscle imbalance. In BJJ we focus a lot on hip flexion. We have overdeveloped hip flexors which can cause problems.
I fixed my issues with hip extension and glute work. Some daily flexor stretching also helped.

I have similar experience. Around age 27 had constant hip pain and tightness in my right hip. Orthopedician said "it's probably beginning arthritis, you're gonna need a hip replacement at 35".
Got over it with rest, postural correction and stretching and right now at 39 my hips are better than ever.

Thats encouraging. I'll have to find some good stretches for it. Currently stuff like the butterfly stretch causes a ton of pain in the outer hip on the left side.

Yeah, stretching hip flexors certainly helps. Wish I had started doing that 20 years ago though.
