So my aim this year is to hit 1000 rounds of meaningful sparring. When I say meaningful, I aim to take away some sort of lesson from each round. Whether it be a lesson in mindset, technical ability etc. To stop myself getting sucked into the "I must change belt colour or get tabs to see progression" void, I set this target because I enjoy performance based metrics and I like to set yearly targets for myself to keep me focused. Nature of my job I suppose. So who will join me in this challenge? Be good to see how we progress and since I am logging all my progress on here since taking up BJJ it will be interesting to see where I am after 1000 rounds.

I was able to roll 500 rounds within a 5 - 6 month period. 1000 in a year is possible. I train daily & go to many open mats on the weeknds.

I manage 3 hours per week of training due to work commitments. I may not hit the goal but it will keep me focused to achieve it at some point and make every session meaningful. But 500 in 5 months is amazing!

I highly recommend tracking your training either in a spreadsheet or here. I have been using a spreadsheet for 5 years now, and have 2 years as was white belt that I didn't track.

Very helpful in my opinion. If you are interested lemme know and I'll post the link...

I would change the word sparring to training.

Sometimes sparring is not best for improvement. At least not all 1000 rounds should be "sparring".

You can sometimes go slower or hit the pause and rewind button during rounds with people you train with often that will be more helpful then say "sparring" hard all the time or just working on new stuff. Don't focus on trying to "win" basically. Focus on working on certain techniques while you are sparring or training and trying to get good at something during the spar. Not trying to end the spar always with a submission for example.

I once tried to log/document 1,000 hours of sparring and it took me 7 years to complete. Still many of the videos and stuff available on my old blog, it seems: https://shogunhq.blogspot[...]%20project

These are all great points I am implementing. The idea for the 1000 rounds is to keep me accountable. I want to make sure I learn something from Jiu Jitsu everyday.

It seems to be something pretty big, but actualy when you sit and think about it :

If you get 5 sparrings per session and you train twice a week, you spar 10 times a week so if you don't train 2 weeks per year, you can have easy 500 on one year of casual training. If you only made 5, sometimes you can have more or doing more trainings....
