I am voting for people now,

that either I don't like, and/or don't like me.

Or their often Brazilian professor hates me because I have a philosophy seemingly similar to BJJ Globetrotters,

even though I don't quite know BJJ Globetrotters well enough to know if their manifesto in practice is followed.

I am voting for them because they are legit, despite the petty nanny-nanny boo-boo personal or local nonsense.

But, this is in an interesting sub-experiment in itself.

Which by the way means, just because I vote for you,

does not mean I like you, or agree with you.

It just means I recognize your lineage and/or abilities are legitimate.

Same here.

Awesome :)

Thought experiment inspired by other thread(s) - would you vote for someone who you don't like, yet has respected lineage and confirmed skills but you think of them as "toxic" or "bad" ...
...let's say they have a confirmed criminal record?
...let's say they aren't bad in the context of law / criminal system but e.g. do publicly things that harm the image of our sport?
...run a school or teach in a school in a way that's morally dubious?

Jorgen,

I do not knowingly verify sex predators, as a for instance, regardless of lineage, or skill.

There could be other issues of grave moral concern that would cause me to not to vote for someone.

But, these are things that would likely involve being convicted of very serious crimes regarding serial fraud, or sexual assault (rape), or pedophilia etc.

Not just because I disagree with them or they disagree with me, etc.

Have not thought about that.
A few questions come to mind.
1. Did they attain their rank while involved in the questionable activity?
2. Did they use their position to commit the offenses.
3. Convicted criminal who turned his/her life around through Jiu Jitsu?

I don't think I could vote for any murderers or sex offenders regardless of legitimacy.
Something I need to think about more for sure.
Good point in bringing it up.

Great! Hopefully others will follow suite. This will definitely increase the number of verified members and the time to become verified.

I verified a former student who allegedly did some questionable things but was never confirmed or charged. Hearsay pretty much.
I struggled with it but I have nothing concrete to justify denying that I promoted him. He has since moved on to another academy (by my request) and I have not heard anything negative about him. My vote in this case was based soley on the fact that I promoted him.
What would you guys have done in a similar situation?

Dave,

I vote to verify people with legitimate ranks, if they have them.

Regarding hearsay, hearsay is hearsay until proven otherwise.

Agree with William, and legitimate BJJ rank is a separate issue from being otherwise an all-round good person.

I'm not in a position to have students of my own, but unless it's a practitioner who is actually potentially dangerous and could use their rank as means to abuse power, I would not dispute if I knew the rank is legit.

I'm curious what will happen when Lloyd Irvin appears on this site. Or one of the many sex offenders Rickson has endorsed.

Did Rickson endorse him after the Lloyd controversy became known?

Or are you saying that because Lloyd is in Jorge Pereira's lineage?

The issues with TLI are independent from the guys Rickson has endorsed, but the question of how we'd treat each of them is the same.

Edit: autocorrect typo
