I had someone come in last night and he is a Black Belt from my old team. We got into the discussion about memberships and I told him Black Belts do not pay a membership at my academy. During that discussion, I was shocked to hear that there are many academies that charge memberships to their black belts. Is not charging black belts not a common practice?

They don't pay at our academy that I know of.

I've never heard of that before. But I've also never paid a lot of attention to how other people were charged when I was training at other schools.

At our gym, most of our classes are "pay-what-you-want", and this obviously applies to black belts as well. If I have black belts (or any belt, really) cover my classes for me they're always compensated somehow.

at my old school the black belt that taught there 1 day a week didn't pay.

At my old Judo and my kenpo school BB's never paid, but when the kenpo school downturned all the black belts started paying to help out etc.

from what Ive seen most BB's are helping teach so they aren't paying to train etc.

It hasn't come up that we've had a black belt who hasn't taught classes. I'd expect if someone wasn't teaching and was just coming to train they'd pay some membership fee, but I also could see us offering them a discount since they'd likely be helping others whether they're explicitly teaching a class or not.

We never had any special deals for black belts (or pro/high level fighters) in my old academy in Copenhagen. Many of them would teach a bit and in this case, they would have free membership like any other employee + we paid them for each class. But if they were not teaching, then they were regular paying members like everybody else. Never had any comments on that.

I presume in Finland a black belt is just another customer. If you're teaching, then you probably train for free. I'm a bit out of the loop though. Haven't been paying for training since I started coaching back in 2012.

Black belt should pay their fees to show exemple for others, to help the dojo financialy. I'm the same with White belt or Black belt, we are all humans no privilège, maybe more duty, that's it stay humble and keep training, Black belt is only the beginning

Interesting. Seems like my academy is an anomaly in the Jiu-Jitsu world. I thought it was a common thing.

I don't think we have a set policy on this where I train, but I'd be very surprised if my coach charged a black belt to train at our gym.

I can’t speak for the instructors, but I pay a tuition. I’m happy to since it’s supports my instructors who make their living off teaching

I think a good guideline is as follows:

- Do they teach? = free
- Do you have more than 50 adult members? = free
- Are they a drop in for just 1 day? = free
- Do you have less than 25 active adult members? = not free

I always assumed that black belts did pay, but back in the day black belts were ninjas. Now that most black belts are mere mortals it never dawns on me that I shouldn't pay dues as a black belt that occasionally teaches.
