I am proud to say that I am now an Ambassador for WeDefy Foundation 501(c)(3) which is 100% volunteer run. There are 300 affiliate gyms and they have provided over 300 athlete veterans scholarships. WeDefy provide combat veterans coping with military connected disabilities, a long term means to overcome their challenges through Brazilian Jiu JItsu and fitness training. The scholarships provide the athletes a one year training at a min of twice a week at an affiliate gym. Please check it out if you are interested in becoming an affiliate.

The physical disabilities our veterans come home with are a tragedy, but, perhaps, easier to overcome than the mental affects. PTSD is a terrible thing for our veterans and affect so many of my friends that served.
There is AMAZING research on a drug called propranolol and it's affect on memory. How memory works is fascinating and largely not fully understood. Propanol is a widely prescribed beta blocker typically used for high blood pressure and public speaking. Oddly enough, it separates the physical expression of fear (sweaty palms, dry mouth, racing heart, etc.) from the fear itself. I know I'm terrified to speak to a room full of people, but I don't have the physical expression of the fear. For those that suffer from PTSD, they have their memories of the events that traumatized them, but they don't have sweats, night terrors, vivid flashbacks (feeling like the trauma is happening right now), intrusive thoughts or images and nightmares.
I'm kind of passionate about the potential use of this widely used medication for PTSD because I've seen it work on the fear of flying and the irrational fear of spiders. It's the same mechanism for PTSD.

Thanks for the Reply Sean! BTW I have been on Propranolol for both my heart and issues that you mention above. If you are interested in learning some of the types of therapies that help with PTSD, one of the things we do is A.R.T therapy. It is not art, like painting and drawing but Accelerated Resolution Therapy.
I am passionate about helping my fellow veterans, and appreciate all the outreach that many people do for us. I am a service connected disabled veteran and know many of the ailments my brothers and sisters go thru. Some of us have "invisible" injury or disability and it is hard for some to understand the struggles that are gone thru. I am involved with not only WeDefy because of this but another non profit called SOF Missions. This is all about veterans resiliency and being able to adjust after mental, physical trauma. If you want to read a great research paper that was done by Dr. Gino Collura on BJJ and the benefits for people with trauma look for his paper "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: A Tool For Veteran Re-assimilation"

What is amazing about propranolol is that it doesn't help manage PTSD, it is curative. It's not the memories that are the problem- we all want to keep our memories or even horrible events- it's the physical manifestations of the memories that are problematic (racing heart, sweating, night terrors, anxiety, etc.)

I agree 100%. Accelerated Resolution Therapy addresses the causative memories and events and helps you deal with them as well as dealing with the physical that comes along with these.

Phil,
It is an amazing cause, and unlike some non-profits almost 100% of the funds coming in go right back to the veterans scholarships. Also the gym that becomes an affiliate is paid for their services by that scholarship. I know for myself as a disabled veteran, BJJ has been both a physical and mental help in my life. This is why I decided to become an ambassador.

I just reached out to affiliate and I would prefer not to get paid and have whatever they give the school go to more scholarships. I feel
we as a nation owe these heroes a lot and don't do enough to help them.

Awesome! That is so cool. I am sure that you might be able to arrange something like that with them. I am working with another veterans group that has helped me in the past, and they are interested in supporting as well.
It was pretty cool hearing a pod cast recently that John Danaher spoke about We Defy. Hopefully this continues to grow and grow.

Nope! Very organized and I'm really glad that they go through the effort that they do to screen potential gyms. Very professional, mostly painless process!
I'm going to be seeing Zakk in a couple days, but I'll holler at you should we need something else. Thanks!

We are a WeDefy Gym, Veterans Jiu Jitsu Gym, Mission 22 Training Partner, VA Community Partner, oh yeah and we are a nonprofit that lets Vets train for free ;) Glad to see so many organizations stepping up to help our vets.

Just did our third WeDefy fundraiser. We love being able to work with this great cause. We have several vets at our gym. Great cause. If you’re interested in being an affiliated gym in Kentucky reach out to Anthony Clemente. @unclelazylizard on IG

Last year I had never heard of We Defy. Then I had a guy contact my gym about coming to train: he was a vet who had been sponsored by We Defy and would we be willing to sign up as an affiliate gym so he could train with us?
My dad is a retired Marine, my grandfather was in the Navy in WW2, I’ve grown up around the military. We Defy looks awesome. I go through the application process, get all the hoops jumped through. The gym owner/head coach has parents who were both in the military and he thinks it’s great too. We’re hoping it brings in a couple more students, thrilled to do fundraising for an awesome cause.
Finally, a few months later dude comes and trains with us for like 2 weeks. Then ends up getting surgery and is gone for 6 months, comes back for a week, decides he wants to do striking/MMA instead. Bruh.
Lol we are still a We Defy affiliate gym, we do the fundraising events, but have no sponsored students. I think there more gyms signed up to be affiliates than there are sponsored veterans, which is a great problem to have. We’re hoping eventually we get a sponsored vet. Just cause we’ve raised more than enough money for two of them in the last year and a half despite barely having one.

We can also let veterans who are new or wanting to try BJJ fill out the application. The scholarship athletes are paired with an approved facility near them. We must spread the word and share the art in order to get an athlete and a gym together. If we are never told then we may never know. The mission is awesome and I support it. We just organized a local BJJ workshop using We Defy facilities and their instructors. Number one of several. Raised awareness and money for the foundation. Also 5+ more gyms have turned in apps to be an approved facility as well as 7 people to become ambassadors.
