IBJJF won't accept my provisional ID as a brown belt, won't accept my professor, won't accept Jay Pages. Out of idea and need help.

So they didn't accept me because I never competed as a purple belt.

They didn't accept my professor because he's not a second degree black belt and he promoted me as a simple....black belt (but he's in good standing with the IBJJF).

I reached out to Jay Pages (4th degree black belt) who signed for me. They accepted him, but then denied my membership because I do not reside in the USA.

I don't know on what foot to dance at this point. I just want to do a few competitions with them because the local scene is limited where I live and there are not a lot of big tournaments with female upper belts. I guess I need a second degree black belt who is a resident of Canada ?

Thanks a lot. This has been going on for months now and I just want the goddamn card.

Looks like you need a Canadian 2nd degree bb in good standing? Crazy that Jay can't sign off on it though; apparently your rank stops at the border?

Plenty of other competitions out there.
Ah yeah ? I've done litterally every competition within a 8 hour drive in 2022 and I managed to find a single brown belt master 2 at a wright class above mine.

I'm stuck in adult, absolutes and super fights with lower belts or pros.

is it that you didn't register as a purple belt? Whats the sticky wicket? Asking as I will do a IBJJF so I can say "I did one" and am a purple belt. Was just curious.

Exactly. Never competed with them before so now I need 2nd degree bb to have a provisional membership for 2 years.

Completely understand. If I want to find the best guys at my weight/age/rank, then I have to deal with the evil empire, and so would you in your position, unfortunately.

Just spitballing here, but what if you were to have a US address? You'd still be able to compete in any tournament, er, ahem, "championship" that they put on, anywhere in the world. Do you have friends in the US who would forward you your paperwork/ID?

What stupid rules. A similar thing happened to me when I was promoted to black belt after 2 years of brown belt. I could not enroll in the European neither as a black belt not as a brown belt because I hadn't registered before as a purple belt.

It seems like purple belt is the point (at least anecdotally) where you have to register - interesting that was the old level you had to be to register to do IBJJF comps before they got even more money hungry

They're asking for real bills and IDs. Would be easier to Photoshop them at this point

The worst part of it is I spent half of my purple time in a lockdown/pandemic, with border closed and no tournaments allowed where I live.

It was simply not possible.

It's quite ridiculous. I tried setting up something in Canada and in the Philippines (I have affiliates in both countries) and it's a pain in the ass to set that up.

It's a stupid new rule/change they made recently. Just like what the did for black belt. If you didn't have an active membership as a brown belt, you're unfortunately on a 1 year probation period for your first year at black belt. So, now, with brown belt, you will have to have an active membership at purple belt. If not, you're put on a 1 year probation period when you get your brown belt. What that means is, where the IBJJF has the minimum time at rank for brown at 1.5 years, they won't start counting that time at rank until 1 year after your brown belt promotion. You 1.5 year at brown is now at 2.5. And if you don't have an active membership at brown belt, your time at rank of 3 years to your 1st degree black belt is now 4 years. Before that only had that requirement for black belts, now they have that requirement for brown belts.

It’s actually a 2 year probationary period. Also, if you change professors during the probationary period, your time starts over.

Two years? Holy crap! This is ridiculous! Is that a more recent change?

I think it's 1 year probationary period for brown belts, and 2 for black. I registered for the first time as a brown belt in 2019, and it was one year.

I signed up as a brown belt and my probationary period was 2 years. I was able to process my promotion black belt after a year being registered on brown though, the probationary status didn't affect that. I'm currently black belt probationary until later this year.

So it's basically an institutionalized test of loyalty. A creonte filter at a "governing body" level.

This is what you get when those with the most money just grab the power (or pretend they did, at least).

This IBJJF bullshit make me sick, everyone knows that it is only a fucking $$$$$$ business for them, people who make those rules didn't even train to think this way, jiujitsu was always about traveling, passion belt on trip in Brazil or somewhere else, professor change, being graduated buy level and skills, not by time....if we had follow those stupid rules BJ PENN would never been that guy who did White to Black on three years followed by a world title Black belt.
I don't understand why people are paying for that robbery again and again...and things didn't gonna chance sooner when you look at the Europeans... 5000 fighters giving their money to the bjj mafia....

While I agree that the IBJJF is bullshit, what can we do about it?
They have everyone by the proverbial cojones and many practitioners support them.

To build a democratically elected, fair governing body of the sport would take an enormous effort from a group of extremely volunteers who are willing to basically devote their life to the cause with the likelihood of no pay for it.

Not impossible, but let’s not hold our breaths for it to happen any time soon.

I registered for the first time as a brown belt in February 2020 and was put on a 2 year provisional membership. I switched academies in April 2021. If I renewed my membership under my new affiliation’s professor, my provisional status would have reset for another 2 years.
