Is this a thing? Do people get together and somehow find mat space on a cruise and roll?
Yes I have found training on the last 2 cruises I was on.

How did you find mat space, and how did you connect with other grapplers (I'm being "dragged along" on a family trip this January)?

This is a phenomenal idea!! I was talking with my wife about taking a cruise. I would have never thought about linking up with people on the cruise to train. This site could make it much easier for those us who train to connect anywhere in the world.

Now the real question is: what precautions are cruise lines making travelers abide by regarding COVID? That was the wife’s first rebuttal when I mentioned a cruise. She doesn’t want to end up stranded in coastal waters of another country a la 2019/2020.

We sail out tomorrow. I'll let you know.

Just to briefly report on my experience, I wound up running into some random blue belt who coincidentally trains out of a gym that I happen to frequent when I'm in the Charlotte, NC area (Charlotte bjj).

After much toil, we were able to reserve an hour in the "fitness studio", and spread out some yoga mats for an impromptu nogi session.

Aside from the very angry/bewildered looks we got from the personal trainer guy who works on the ship, and the horrible quality of the mats on our old joints, we got a good hour of rolls in.

3/10 stars... but doable. I've trained in worse conditions.

Totally forgot to respond to this:

Precautions were fairly minimal. Out of around ~2000+ people in board, there were maybe like 30 people in masks. Tons of kids touching stuff and licking stuff lol.

There were a handful of hand sanitizer stations scattered around, but that was about it.

That being said, I managed to remain healthy during and after the trip, but my wife caught some sort of bug in board (not covid). Pretty sure the rest of my family was able to stay healthy as well, as someone would have told me if they caught something serious.

I like the idea of a gym that can travel, but I'm not a fan of cruises (various reasons, pollution being one of the many: https://www.forbes.com/si[...]-problems/ ).

Which makes me wonder if there is a better alternative. Probably not, tough to think of some other transport method that is sufficiently huge that it can easily contain both a decent sized matspace and lots of people.

Ive seem a trend of people buying permanent cabins on cruises and living on the ships year round. I would not be surprised if some of them brought mats to train onboard.
