I occasionally have this discussion on Reddit, so I thought I'd carry it over to here to see others thoughts. Do you all track your BJJ training (hours, notes etc.), and if so, what's your preferred approach? I'm sure some of you track via beltchecker directly, or maybe an excel sheet, or classic pen and paper. I've put together a Notion page so I can take notes on my training and generate some statistics (e.g. total hours, hours gi vs nogi, competition stats). It would be great to hear if anyone else does something similar, and how they go about it. Particularly if you use Notion as well, it would be great to compare.

If there are any other Notion users out there who want to copy my template then please go ahead. I have an example template with a few placeholder entries (https://dwhettam.notion.s[...]fb8735d5f3). If you want to duplicate it you're best off duplicating it from the home page here: https://dwhettam.notion.s[...]dafcf7fab1

I use Beltchecker for my daily training. But for tracking the specifics, I have three lists I constantly update. The first is the things I'm objectively good at, things I'm having trouble with and things that could beat me. The first list I basically try to leave alone. Not to say I don't use it, but it's the stuff I'm going to do during rolls, so I kind of use that to develop. The second and third lists are the focus of my personal training. We have a free training intensive session every day in my gym, so that's what I work on there. Basically, every position I have trouble getting out of, everything people use to get a score on me, every submission I get caught in is positional sparred on a pretty daily basis until it's not a problem anymore. Then I reevaluate the lists and start over again.

Thanks, I really like that idea of running lists with things to work on. I've done that a little bit but with much less detail than you've suggested.

I had a training partner that developed his own app. I had about four years of training logged into it and his program got corrupted and everyone’s data was lost. After that I gave up tracking besides what I remember to log on here.

I’ve tried many times over the years to track training. I haven’t stuck with it. Now, I kinda keep mental notes on the areas I want to improve. I do nothing but those moves/concepts until they work on grapplers my skill level and above. I’ve see good improvements on the skills using this method. However, it seems that this platform makes it easy to log training, so I’ll maybe give it a go in 2023z

I was never much of a note taker. I tried for about 2-3 months to write down info about my training sessions. My notes were a jumbled mess that seemed less than beneficial. Now the only thing I track is the calendar, gotta make sure the instructor gets paid on time.

I have notes on my phone that I check before I go to class. Things I want to work on. If I saw something cool or if I have an idea. Or sometimes if I have been having an ongoing problem and it get solved I’ll make a note.

I like the 3 list thing. That’s cool. Lol my first list will be short though

Simple Google Drive sheet for BJJ with columns such as: Date | Day | Hours | gi/nogi | Location | Coach | Topic | Feeling

I train 2-4 times a week just for fun/leisure and such tracking works just fine. If you have some specific (more professional) reason to track then there is probably better tool for you.

I just use belt checker to track all my BJJ training. I don't include my S&C work in my tracking.
Just started doing the same thing. I’ll see how it goes for this years of training. Hopefully, the simplicity of this tool will help me stick it out.

I sign up for trainings on spond to track them there and also I track them here on beltchecker.
I used to track weightlifting, runing and other trainings on her to, but it got to messy so I deleted all non BJJ trainings. So I only track the bjj trainings on this app. It works greate for it so don't need anything else to keep track.

Spond is more for my instructor to see when I train or teach.

One of my friends who is much better at excel than me, put together a spreadsheet which allows entry of gi, NoGi, MMA, wrestling, etc. He set the formatting so gi and NoGi, calculate and fill a bar in accordance with your belt rank. I've been keeping track for the past five years with this method and it's been helpful.

I wonder if anyone has come up with interesting things to track improvement outside the normal classes/hours/rounds type of stuff? it's a struggle just to get to the academy as much as I would like, and it's easy to go through the motions without deliberate practice in a certain area. Time should be correlated to improvement, but perhaps not learning efficiency. I can track sessions, but it seems a step or more removed from what I'm really interested in, since I don't think anyone would bother tracking sessions if they could just directly track "improvement" (which I'm sure I'd even know where to start defining).

I have been keeping a journal for my weightlifting and conditioning for years. Now I just use a regular old calendar. I keep track of number bjj days/number of conditioning days and number of days with no booze. Just to keep myself honest.

I use life cycle to track where I go and when I show up at the gym it tracks that as well. So my tracking is basically how many hours I am at the BJJ gym per week, month and year. Good enough.

Another question: I know there is a judo checker site (I am not interested in joining). Does anyone log their non BJJ grappling activities here? I do judo as well, and that sport is definitely applicable to BJJ.

I use a google sheets doc that I've been using for more then 5 years now (doing BJJ for 8).

I use it for gi, nogi, sparring, drilling, open mats and teaching. It allows me to see what Ive been working on, where Ive spent time, etc etc.

How are some of you organizing the tracking of your training using google docs?
Hey sir -

probably easier to just share my doc. Please check it out (or anyone else who needs something), it's all set up for 2023 with the dates and days etc.

https://docs.google.com/s[...]=516099866

My categories are arbitrary and can be changed to whatever fits your needs, sir.
