hello everyone.
I am new to Belt checker but i like what i see so far. My name is Jay Nolte, i started training with my son 10 years ago. We currently train under UFC veteran Brian Foster in Fort Smith AR. Check out my profile please!
I am currently training techniques from Saulo Ribeiro's Jiu jitsu university book in a small class i teach in the early mornings at my gym. I have had this book forever but recently put together a 13 week curriculum to get through every chapter cover to cover. So far this has been a good exercise for me and my small morning class. if anyone has tweeked out on this book please give me some feedback...what is your favorite takeaway?
Happy rolls eveyone!

The main thing to focus on out of that book is the concepts instead of individual techniques

I got it many moons ago when it first came out. I remember mostly using it to memorize the names of different techniques. Maybe I should revisit it one of these days.

The chapter headings are my favourite part, giving a focus for each belt level.
White belt focus: survival. Blue belt, escapes. Purple, guard. Brown, passing. Only at black belt does Saulo suggest focusing on submissions.
Naturally it's not wrong to at least know how to armbar at white belt. But it's ok to be shit at it. White belts need to survive first.
I've said this to my students so many times over the years. It's a really useful framework to keep in mind.

Priit Mihkelson's beginners course is only submissions. Including heel hooks :p

One of the various reasons I wouldn't want to train regularly at Priit's gym. ;)

You have to heel hook everyone, even the children. They need to know the world is a cold hard place full of wrist lockers and heel hookers

Which is why we chant it "motivational cult style" at the beginning of each kid's class I teach LOL
