Hi guys,
A questions for practitioners with babies or small kids (less than two year old). How did you guys introduce BJJ in their routine? When you started? Which moves?
All my experience is with bigger kids (+4), where by you can introduce some Grappling games.
My first baby is due next month, and I would like to introduce some plays/games around BJJ moves.
I once saw a video of a guy introducing hip escapes, framing, guard retention (circling legs and framing over the shoulder) moves and etc, by the babies defending tickles. I can't remember where was it and who was it. But I feel there is a lack of material around this subject or maybe I didn't search harder for it?
Is there any videos, materials you guys would recommend for that?
Thanks!

Just because I want to introduce concepts and play with him with something I like? If I asked about how to introduce football in young age, is it not started kicking a ball? Why is that also not weird?

By the way, I don't have any expectations of him becoming a world champion or anything like that. My question is far away from that.

My son is 10 months and already been to like 8 tournaments and 30 practices.
That is the introduction.
No point in trying to teach them anything until they are 4 or 5 years old. They aren't going to remember or understand any of it.
Just let them be comfortable in the environment itself.

In case any of you guys know someone else with this type of contents, please let me know. I would really appreciate.
I am pretty sure lots of the things in the videos can be performed earlier than what is mentioned in thr title.

I think that kids under 7 should stick to just Judo.

I wont start with BJJ class too. Probably Judô or Wrestling.

I think bringing them with you until they’re old enough to join kids class is fine. My almost 3 year old has been in class with me since he was 6 months old (only cause that’s what I started or it would’ve been sooner). And he’s super interested in it from that.

I just had my son do basic ukemi so that he could fall safely, along with some fundamental movements like standing in base. I wanted him to be able to move well so that he would be safe when he started judo at age five. Kids can’t learn very complex movements until they are older. The Gracie Bullyproof DVD set has a bunch of Jiu-Jitsu games you can play with your kid (age 5+) that are really helpful for teaching fundamentals in a playful way. They also taught me Helio Gracie’s rule for teaching kids: “Expect nothing; praise everything!” That rule helped keep me sane while coaching kids’ judo. :)

I don’t have the teaching chops that many on this forum do, but with my kids, as babies I would just move them around. When they could walk and speak I did grappling games with them. You can find a bunch of them online. I bought Joel Bouhey’s video on bjj games for kids during the pandemic. These were helpful in making some of the basic movements more fun.
I do agree with others though that actually flowing with techniques usually doesn’t happen until later. I started my kids at ages 3 and 4, but the older one didn’t start getting it until around age 7. Personally though, I still found value in putting them in grappling as early as possible since now they accept it as part of their routine. Meanwhile it’s a struggle to get them to do other sports

Hey bro, I am a dad of 4 kids and have been training for 25yrs. My oldest has won worlds at a couple of different belts and is a black belt. She started at 7, my next oldest son started at 4, my youngest son started at 7. My youngest daughter started at 4. You know who still trains bjj….the kids that started at 7. Those little ones were introduced to other sports during that time and by the time they came into bjj, they embraced…. While the other ones only did it because it made dad happy until they hit 7… at that point it was no longer fun for them… small sample size, but worth noting.

when my kid was a baby just learning to walk, sometimes I was playing with his balance, very lightly pushing him so he'd have to adjust, let's call it early intro to Kuzushi^^
my niece is 7 now, and just loves the idea of learning jiu jitsu, I play with her when we meet, but I think it's ok to wait longer, for now she is doing gymnastics, and I think that might actually be a better foundation for her body.
start them with 5+years of gymnastics
say from 5 to 10 or 12
Then if they like grappling arts they'll have such a good base to build upon.
another data point ( a datum if you will...^^)
one friend put his 4 year old in BJJ classes, the kid is taller and heavier than most 7 y/o, but it's not playful enough for him. Too regimented and they'll lose interest.
you can only thrive if there's a real spark of self-motivation somewhere.
how do we spark that?
Perhaps show them how it's fun and beneficial for us, the adult role models in their lives, but there's no guarantees our kids will follow in our footsteps.
I'm very happy my son (19 y/o) still rolls with me! since he was 11. so much fun, good luck with your kid!
