Well, I saw a legit BB here, who changed team and the professor (who promoted him) withdrawed verification at beltchecker.
I know the guy and he is for sure a legit BB!

This kind of „creonte“-bullshit should have been left behind by creating a source like beltchecker.com.
I thought the idea of this project is, to free BJJ from that kind of arbitrariness and artificial borders.
To me it is a disappointing behaviour of a high ranked professor….

Am I wrong with this kind of self-understanding as a part of beltchecker-community?
What do You think about?

I personally don't agree with that but I have seen it.
If I promote a person I stick by it whether they stay with me or leave or even if they leave and I just don't like them.
I stick by the promotion.
Many Black Belts behave as if their students owe them something or they have some kind of power over them.
Guess what, they do not have any power or control over anyone.

Now if a student that got promoted to Black Belt turns out to be a child molestor, murderer and criminal, you can easily just disassociate yourself with them.
You can't deny that you promoted them at the time.

In academics, there are rare cases of universities revoking graduate degrees, but they are almost always related to academic integrity issues while at the university (e.g., they find out that a graduate student plagiarized part of his doctoral dissertation). Universities definitely don't revoke your master's degree just because you decided to go to another school for your Ph.D.

I Know the professor and also the graduated guy. It’s not a big thing when you know the story and the reason why he left one academy to another academy. It’s a really bad behavior and they don’t understand that they can’t decide what people are doing. Narcissism at its best.

This happened to me recently. I promoted this man to blue belt and now he’s being charged with murder. I was interviewed by the news about being his former instructor. I even have a photo of him on one of my beltchecker class photos

I could see this behavior coming a mile away. With all our best efforts, there’s always going to be someone who games the system or uses it for revenge or their own benefit.

The good news is, it’s doesn’t happen very often.

This is not only a problem in BJJ. I apologize for going off topic a bit, but...
In judo, unfortunately, it's much worse. I know this because I've been on the mat for pretty much exactly 51 years. If you have earned a relatively high rank in judo and then resign from an "official" federation because you are tired of all the sports politics, it can happen that some officials want to "remove" your belt rank. That's basically nothing other than this "Creonte" BS ...
They actually seriously believe that they can downgrade you to a white belt, so to speak.
That's silly. Mainly because the award of the black belt ranks is not tied to the fact that you have to be a member of this "official" association for the rest of your life.
But you are not a serf of any organization, gym or teacher!
It's the same in BJJ in my opinion. You are not the "property" of the black belt from which you got your own black belt, for example.
I very much hope that the unfavorable development that judo has taken over the past 40 years due to sport-political decisions will not also have an effect in BJJ.
Again: Sorry for OT.

I have seen this stuff happen to many times over the years, and I am beyond happy to have found my current coach. To many "higher ups" that are quick to shout creonte at students, but it doesn't happen when it is the other way around and the instructor betrays the student.

A similar case is a BB given by the closest instructor (a <2 degree BB) but formally awarded by the instructors instructor (a (non present) >2 degree BB) who doesn't issue a diploma (diploma only signed by <2 degree BB). Where affiliations were changed between the closest instructor and the instructors instructor. There was no evidence produced before the split, but now the student now would like the BB recognised through Beltchecker. I don't think the instructors instructor has been contacted yet, but what if this person doesn't want to make an effort confirming his promotions of students of one of his students who is no longer affiliated?

I.e. the promoting instructor doesn't revoke or deny the promotion but possibly doesn't confirm or even comment on it either.

We don't know about the outcome in this case and I hope the person will get the evidence needed. But I could also see a situation where the instructors instructor doesn't at all feel any such obligation.

So is that "creonteism" too? I personally think so, although in the case of someone commiting terrible crimes, I can understand it.

From the lineage-point of view thats an interesting problem!
But I think this platform is a chance to help out approved practicioners who become victim of third persons action or force majeure, too.
I see a bit of a difference between the case I described above and the case Johan described.
-Nevertheless I would vote in case of doubt mostly in favour of the person who is at the end of the chain and just wants to verify to be a legit whatever.
The good thing is:
Everyone of us can decide from case to case and we can dicuss about it.

Claiming lineage to a creonteist, notorious in the BJJ community for not acknowledging promotions of those no longer affiliated, still needs to be backed up by evidence, in my opinion.

If we, out of sympathy, verify without evidence in those cases, it would open up for anyone to get a free pass to get whatever belt they choose verified through Beltchecker by claiming promotion from an instructor infamous in that matter. Which lessens the trustworthyness of all verifications and the legitimacy of Beltchecker compared to IBJJF.

If the lineage in itself can be verified though, just not the promotion, I would be open to meet up with the person if geographically possible and verify through then first hand knowledge of the persons skills. Verifications out of first hand experiences from others would also weigh heavily.

If I were to verify, I would make sure to include very clear criticism of the promoting creonteist in my comment. They need to understand that it reflects very poorly on them with such behaviour.

Silly - yes.

However - that's the beauty of Beltchecker. It is very highly likely that anyone withdrawing their vote after some time is of no consequence. E.g. in current case - likely several other people voted considering the "awarding instructor vote" at that time part of the evidence. And they won't withdraw now.

To say it quite clear:
Not any sympathy, evidence rules!
It is a misunderstanding or -maybe- I was not on point.

To come back to topic the evidence is obviously and lots of verifications out of first hand experiences with the guy are deposited.

This is something I hate in Martial arts. We share a journey with someone, and we promote them and sometimes we fall out for various reasons.

I have had several people i parted ways with because I felt their behavior and standards no longer represented my teaching well BUT I did promote them and will always acknowledge I did. I feel that is you rescind or deny a promotion after parting ways your promotions become completely meaningless

All we can really do is choose to act differently than the people before us.

I will always provide certificates, I will always back people I promote, even if they leave. To promote change you have to be in front of it

Hello everyone,

I'm that black belt it's about.

The reasons for the separation from my old club were political things. It was neither sporting nor human for me in order. Many reasons that are not acceptable to me. That's why I parted on good terms and very respectfully.
After that there was bad talk and the black belt of my black belt rejected the black belt on Beltchecker. I have a certificate, pictures and also recessions.
Personally, I find that very unfortunate.

After the breakup, I looked for a new club.

By having a short look at the questioned profile aside from the points I saw a very interesting (obviously not BJJ-) belt of the professor while promoting Thilo.
Maybe we have to divide in stripping of a „hiddensuperforce“-grade but keeping a legit BJJ belt?!

To be serious again:
For me it is NOT o.k. to wear any belt aside BJJ during a BJJ promotion. Any pic documentation otherwise is not possible.
Other martial arts-ranks do not have any evidence.

In this case it is quite clear, that the lineage and the promoting professor are legit.
But it is a fundamental thing.

Well most places I’ve been take pics of promotions so the person can always add that to their profile. Yes some won’t verify on belt checker but with pics of all promotions some will verify through their contacts your legit.

There were pics, but without the promoting instructor, who still has never met the promoted person. The BJJ Globetrotters were kicked out of IBJJF for less, but this was a Brazilian led team which often places in top 3 in the mundials, so gringo rules don't apply to them.

The promotion pictures instead showed the promoted persons everyday instructor (who affiliated with the promoting instructor only earlier the same year and got his own BB the year before) plus two BB:s (without degrees) from the promoting instructors academy and those two were only there for the promotion.

The promoted persons diploma was only signed by the everyday BB instructor (without degrees).

I know you were speaking more generally, but in this case, there really is no evidence. And even if evidence is produced from the promoting instructor, it shouldn't be accepted even by the IBJJF, if they are to apply the same standards as when BJJ Globetrotters were kicked out and they wrote "When professors sign for memberships of students who do not train under their guidance, such actions risk damaging the integrity of the sport, which goes against the values of IBJJF".

Johan but lets face it the IBJJF values are how can we make more money.

Look at the Inoue situation some of the things with the IBJJF are laughable. I prefer this type of thing a group of peers and if you have questions about someones promotion you can ask them and they can provide further verification

I agree ! You cannot wear a karate belt and promote in bjj. Also you cannot wear a bjj belt and promote in karate….. I think it’s a matter of respect for the sport, the students and the own lineage.
