First degree BB:s promoting first degree BB:s?

In my humble opinion, a 1:st degree BB should not promote someone else to 1:st degree BB, as they (per most common standards) can't promote to all ranks lower than 1:st degree BB (i.e. BB without degrees).
A first degree with an instructor name attached to the promotion to me signals that it is NOT just a time served degree but awarded by a senior practitioner of a higher rank (still after the promotion). If that is not the case, I would consider it misleading not to display it in Promotion history on Beltchecker etc. as an ordinary nameless time served promotion (whether first claimed through IBJJF or Beltchecker). Myself, I'd rather see a time served 1:st degree promotion, as then, there is transparence.
What are your thoughts on the issue?

I didn't even know people could do their own degress based purely on time served.

I didn't even know people could do their own degress based purely on time served.
Long story short:
Business savvy individuals of the Gracie family monetized the process and through first mover advantage gained a position where it became a sports standard that you get degrees on BB:s without an instructor following your progression, instead just based on you paying IBJJF hefty money over a bunch of years and in return, you get to claim your degrees on BB based on "time served" and get the degree certified by IBJJF.
Beltchecker is basically a big experiment offering a way to do the same thing with the money grab part removed and a lot of transparency added, to see if these degrees would gain equal acceptance in the wider BJJ community as the IBJJF supported degrees on BB.

That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

My thoughts are this makes no sense to me, and is a very analytical statement not taking the human factor into consideration.
If someone chooses to do “time served” I totally back this, and will vote them up if the time is served. However ….if this person does have time served, they are likely training, and if they are training, their training partners are going to want to promote them. And if their training partners promote them “time served” then they should put that on their profile. If you are adding stripes for time served, who cares who puts in on your belt

Lastly… last time I checked there was absolutely zero centralized BJJ authority. Meaning “there isn’t an authority to reference” but if you want to use IBJJF as your authority, when they are not, then it comes down to time served. And it doesn’t matter if you open your mail and put that stripe on yourself, or your training partner takes the letter and does it for you (to follow some sort of martial arts tradition)

To piggyback off of your posts...
I mean, there were Gracies, Machados, and other Brazilians that were given their Coral belts by lower ranked black belts. I guess with the big name Brazilians, it doesn't matter who promotes you, but it's an issue when it's everyone else? Who knows. Just saying.

A bit like when Beltchecker started and needed a number of arbitrarily verified BB:s to get things going. Are there even any records of Mitsuo Maeda giving any of the Gracies a BB (or any other belt promotion)?
We have to remember BJJ is in many ways still pioneered, with pieces falling slowly into place, sometimes to be scrambled again. I find Beltchecker interesting in that it can push and nudge things from a grassroot perspective, very transparently and in many ways democratic. Perhaps what we write on these forums, sleep drunkedly and sitting on the loo, echoes in eternity ;-P

There's no record of any of the Gracies having trained with Maeda at all.

I’m not a history expert, but given that this happened in 1918 or so, what kind of record are you talking about ? There is record of him in Brazil at that time, setting up his own dojo, and the connection between that and the Gracie’s “I believe” comes from personal interviews with Helio and Gastao Gracie. What do you mean by no record? That’s interesting, would love your perspective

I mean there's no record. Like nothing, other than some stories told by some people long after the alleged event took place. Maeda died in 1941, and there's not so much as a photograph of any of them in the same place at the same time.
Of course, a lack of evidence doesn't necessarily mean something didn't happen, it just means there's no evidence, afaik.
In Robert Drysdale's book, "Opening Closed Guard", he theorizes that Carlos (and Helio via Carlos) were actually students of one of Maeda's students, and probably never trained with Maeda at all.

Ohh in that context. Yes i get that. But I think that line of thinking could discredit most of history before that point. Not very many cameras in the dojo’s in 1918, especially in Brazil. Even though there’s lack of photography, there’s enough of a written record to make me OK with the events, unless something comes to light to disprove it. I’m the same with dinosaurs. I’m for dinosaurs. Lol

There's a guy here on beltchecker who has a fantastic bjj history blog. Here is an article he wrote about this student (Jacintho Ferro): https://simonbjj.com/ferro
Sorry everyone for getting off topic. Maybe there's already another thread on this?

I love reads like this, but I wish the writers would use references. Maybe it’s the college in me, but I love some good referenced works.

"Dear Helio! I don't want to question your abilities as a grand master, which I know nothing about, but verifyers shouldn't need to do the work of digging up the evidence. Provide some photos of you showing a shaka sign with your alleged instructor Mitsuyo Maeda or get him to verify your rank if he's on beltchecker and I'll upvote your profile, if everything checks out! -100pts Kind regards Johan."

Pete, if Helio wasn't a founder but born 80 years later and not generally known in the community, I'm quite sure I wouldn't be the only one to downvote if he was caught redhanded with historical revisionism of his promotion history on Beltchecker. I'm also quite sure he would gather his brothers and give each of us a good group beating for it :-)

For the record, I don't think anybody is questioning whether or not Helio is the legit heir to the position he holds, along with Carlos Sr, at the top of the pyramid scheme; it's irrelevant with whom Helio trained, or was otherwise "promoted" by.
Very few of us here on beltchecker can trace their lineages to anyone other than the two brothers, so it is more because of THEM that we're all doing this thing together, and Maeda most likely plays more minor of a role.
However, the history of our art/sport is interesting to many of us, whatever it may be.

Seriously I think of it this way: Who am I to verify anyone's rank. Th instructor awards rank, it is under him or her and their criteria. They can get it recognized by one of the big associations IBJJF or SJJIF if their instructor is a member.
Beltchecker is kind of like a peer review people can come on and get a general sense of what the "community" thinks of a person and their rank. I think it is a great tool for newcomers to BJJ and potential students to get a pulse on peoples reputations

I would think it suspicious if somebody promoted a load of black belts immediately after getting their black belt.
However, If you're a legit black belt, then outside of circumstances like the above, I see nothing wrong with you promoting other people to black belt. I don't care many bits of tape you have on that black belt.

I have caught plenty of profiles here where the marked promoter to black belt has not been officially a 2nd degree black belt at the time of the promotion. However, I have chosen not to dispute these profiles, because nitpicking about the time criteria is kinda dumb, and these people appear legit by all other accounts.
Also, in cases where it's a no-stripe BB promoting a BB, I assume that's just the local instructor who has done the honors, and the promotion has been given an okay from a higher-up (which the person has failed to mention in the profile). A no-stripe BB promoting black belts on their own should not happen though, I believe having a "time at black" requirement before promoting blacks of your own is a decent one.

Though I think having a more experienced black belt to give the ok is the ideal situation (and whenever I get my black belt, I would certainly ask my instructor before I promoted anybody to black), I disagree, for two reasons.
Firstly, 'no-stripe' could easily be somebody who has just never bothered to get any degrees, because they either don't care or they don't have a relationship with the person who promoted them.
Secondly, I think there are plenty of people who have been a black belt for less than three years (or whatever the time limit is now for degrees) who are capable of judging when somebody is ready for black belt.
For example, let's say there is somebody who is a fresh black belt. They have a brown belt student they've been training with for fifteen years. Do you seriously think that the black belt wouldn't be able to judge when the brown belt was ready, even if that was well before that black belt hit the three year mark?

Slideyfoot, I personally haven't "bothered" to get any degrees as I presently have no need for them, but as I see it, I will have to bother before I give out BB:s of my own, unless I want to put my BB(:s) in the awkward position of having an easily disputed BB. Why would any one be in that much of a hurry in any case? Also, if you're that close together in time, I would see it most of all as a mutual training partner relationship, even if you can accurately judge each other. I've had all color belts on no-gi open mats accurately judging me as a BB. Should they then all too me eligible to promote to BB?

Yes... they then should be able to get an okay from the person who promoted them to black. Unless that person is also a non-degree BB and then it all gets murky. Yes, there might be a falling off between instructor and student, but a second degree black should be very easy to find on most corners of the world where BJJ is practiced to ok a promotion of a legit brown belt.

Yes, but then I would see the second degree BB as the real promoting instructor, which should be named under Promotion history on Beltchecker. And the teacher BB should really help the student BB get promotion evidence from the promoting BB. Extra important in situations (non advisable) where the promoting BB doesn't even meet the student and won't even remember or log his or her name after. Otherwise, the grade will not be worth more than a grade directly from the non 2:nd degree BB.
It might sound a bit harsh to expect those students to wait again for their own instructor to reach the six year mark, in order to get a definitively legit BB promotion date, but still a lot less harsh than the IBJJF:s regulations.

Yeah, I agree that the ideal situation is to have somebody ok the belt. I also don't think you would commonly find the kind of situation I described (an obviously legit brown belt ready for promotion who shouldn't be made to pointlessly wait six years, but overseen by a black belt with no stripes and a long relationship with the brown belt), but it is possible. Hence my opinion.
As to your analogy, I don't think it works as a reasonable comparison. A no stripe black belt tends to be very superior to blue/purple belts in terms of judging the hypothetical scenario I mentioned. However, 1 or 2 or even 3 stripe black belts aren't necessarily very superior to a no stripe black belt, in terms of judging that same scenario.
You yourself would seem to be a good example. You've been training over 26 years. That matters more than the fact you don't have any stripes on your black belt.
