While reading the post about profiles for deceased practitioners it made me think. It would be kinda cool to take the lineage data populated on here, and use it to build out a BJJ Family Tree.
Not really all that useful from a technical standpoint, but would be kind of a cool feature.

It's been tried before at Rolljunkie but eventually fell apart.

There would really need to be a standard format for entering lineage (also avoiding duplicate versions of the same promoting instructor and confusion between promoting instructors with similar names).
Would be good though if more people actualy filled in lineage on their profiles.

BJJ Link has a lineage tree. If I could remember my password I’d take a screenshot of it.

You can click on each name to expand the tree. It is far from being complete. Apparently you can request changes/additions be made. Not sure if it would be worth the effort to do that here when a 30-second google search will get you the answer.

Beltchecker has the data to generate something like this but most people have more than one coach throughout their career so I think it it would end up being one big mess to be honest 🤷🏼♂️

Perhaps it would be less of a mess to only add those to the tree who themselves have filled in one (and only one) lineage in that field. Perhaps also with a marker, like *, in the beginning to trigger the tree function. Although I guess most people here don't even come around to filling in a lineage.

I think the only way it works is if you only count the lineage at blackbelt

It would be tricky, especially on the form validation. Would probably have to use the existing database to auto complete when people enter lineage to keep there from being dozens of unique versions of the same name. If it was tied to whoever you entered on each belt instead of the lineage field, allowing the same person to be in the tree multiple times could solve the issue of multiple coaches, with a tool tip allowing you to move to the other branch in the tree.

The lineage field is of course useless for this but the coaches and students connections could easily be used. But apart from the obvious issue that lineage isn’t linear, we simply also don’t have enough profiles any time soon to do this properly.
