Just curious if people can think of other things that they would like to see for them to vote for someone they don't know. Photos with instructors are great as well as certificates are good. Videos of teaching techniques and competition are good for me especially if I recognize the opponent. Maybe there is something specific you look forward in photos or videos?

Great question, Toby. As a fellow "pendee" I've been curious as to what makes a profile seem legit. Especially as so few people here (so far) would have a clue as to your lineage based on a few photos, certs and such. One that would definitely give me confidence, is a copy of an athlete's IBJJF status. Having just submitted my credentials and been approved for membership with the IBJJF, I would have no hesitation in voting up an IBJJF member. Especially since it appears that your academy and instructor have to have been vetted by, and be members of that organization. Like anything though, I guess it can be faked online. I like your idea of the comp videos. They would be ideal for those that have competed recently. Not so much old farts like yours truly. :)

I like to look for evidence of coaching and/or competition prowess. To me, certificate or connection with only one instructor is secondary.

I mean, I thought the whole point of this was becoming an independent thing, trusted and reliable. Surely "paid IBJJF fees" should not be mandatory for validation.

Nothing is mandatory, criteria for verification is fully up to each individual.

Just to make it clear, confirmed verified coach is just one of the factors I look at :) I guess I could say that the more time and effort they have put into building their profile and fill out everything, the more I’ll consider looking into it and voting. Competition record, videos of matches, etc definitely is a big plus. If you’re lazy with your profile, I don’t care investing in it.

I actually didn't include my ibjjf certification on purpose. I figured if someone searched they could find it. I thought that I would try to prove my legitimacy in other ways.

Confirmed promotions and coach relationship with verified instructor profile, definitely helps.
Oh, yeah. I could see that being a big factor in the future, unfortunately at the moment in my area the only person confirmed is one of the blue belts at my instructor's school. But yes, that would make it easier.

Yes, I had to look it up on line for you.

In order to vote for you.

As a professional courtesy.

For you.

You know, you could have saved me that step and just posted it...

Are you all more willing to pull the trigger to verify a blue than a brown or black belt. I am. If I see enough to think that a school is legit and a blue belt had pictures to prove they were promoted there I would give them the thumbs up, but a brown or black I'd want to see more, I'd do digging of my own, and I'd like to see video of rolling out competition.

I think most black and brown belts have some form of online presence even if they aren't the ones putting it out there.

Yes.

I like to help out colored belts to get started, especially if they're from a more remote community, if they have done a good job with their profile, and especially if the instructor is a known name or they have filled their comp records (usually easy to check) or the Smoothcomp profile shows results at reported rank.

For me to vote a black belt (or to bit lesser degree, a brown) that is not previously known to me, I prefer there to be at least one or two verified first-hand testimonials from legit people on the profile. (My lousy points seldom make a difference though. :D)

In many ways, unless a verified black belt claims them, or a black belt you know is tying the belt around their waist,

I find that black belts are able to be verified more reliably than the lower belts.

Black belts often have signed certificates, and often have pictures of their own black belt being tied around their waist by a 2nd degree or higher black belt, who themselves are going to be more likely to be well known in our community.

Black belts often have membership cards and/or certifications with various organizations or networks that handle and also verify ranks.

Black belts, having been around longer, will often have larger electronic paper trails, including pictures and videos, than lower belts.

There is also a higher chance that a black belt I know personally knows another black belt, than a blue belt, even though there are more blue belts.

So, I have had a decent measure of success being able to verify black belts, but I find being able to verify the lower belts much more challenging, unless a black belt that I have verified on here claims them as their promoting instructor or was a witness to their promotion.

This.

I almost never post pictures or videos of myself online, with very few exceptions.

Those exceptions probably number a dozen, including the photos of myself on my profile here.

However, my students, sometimes with my knowledge, sometimes without, often post pictures, or videos of me.

I found out after the fact, that one of them had created an instagram account for me...

I am, for the most part, actually a fairly private person, and I am not big on the "selfie" movement,

nor am I big on having pictures and/or videos of me, and certainly not of my family, everywhere on the Internet.

What has become standard and regular would have been thought of as weird when I was growing up,

and I still find it weird.

I agree with this statement even though I am guilty of posting alot of stuff online. When I first heard of instagram and facebook I thought people had gone mad.
It was actually Royler and one of my former students who pushed me to start on instagram. Took another 4 years before I became a joiner on facebook.
One good thing has come from it, I have reconnected with plenty of old friends from back home in NJ and also my fellow servicemen whom I had not heard from since I separated in 2000. That's also the bad thing about it though so good and bad came from it. lol

Lineage, beyond who promoted them.
That is helpful for many. I am lucky that my instructor was a world champion and is well known in the community... But any students I promote would want to tell people that their instructor was promoted by Cassio Werneck.

Being a bit of a lineage snob, I'd like to see an official spot for that in the profiles.
I suggested this feature, and Christian's reply was that one can just put it in the "Description" section.

Is that the "Wall" section? I was wondering whether that would be the appropriate spot.

Nope, you can find it from the ”Edit profile” options. Then it will show under the information about your gym, affiliation & social media links. (You can type any text in there, take a look at my profile for an example.)

It would be nice to have a lineage section. I guess it can even be auto filled when your instructor is verified.

For those I don't know personally, the more time invested into building their profile means the more time I'll take to actually consider it and research them.
