We don't have a bjj kids class at our gym but one of our brown belts asked our instructor if he could bring his son who trains somewhere else to a session so he could experience rolling with different people. Our instructor obviously said yes. We always line up in the grading order before the class. The kid has been training for over 2years and he's a white-grey belt so he started squeezing between our blue and white belts. His dad bollocked him and sent him to the end of the queue but I think that kid was actually correct. As a white-grey belt he probably knowledge-wise is way above our white belts even though they would just toy with him in sparring. I know that in normal circumstances kids don't or even shouldn't train with adults but it may happen for example during seminars. What's your opinion? Where would a white-grey belt kid stand in relation to adult white belts in your club?

Where I teach and train we've always had kids line up behind the adult lines according to their belts.

Honestly if it were up to me people could just line up as they want.

I find it all a bit silly.

I also hate being called "Professor"
Thought I'd like it until someone actually called me that.
Now I can't get them to just call me Dave.
I love Jiu Jitsu but sometimes it is down right silly.

I get what you're saying but I always looked at it as a way of showing courtesy. I have a huge deal of respect for my team mates who have been training longer than me . Even though they're old and beat up now I remember when they used to kick my ass when I was starting out and also when they welcomed me to the club, when they were trying to help me learn and develop. If some of them are for whatever reason the exact same grade as me at any point of our journey I will always let them in front of me during the line up to show them that I remember.

That is indeed silly. However I use it to address other black belts when I visit certain clubs if they tend to use it. " Your house.Your rules."

I don’t mind being called “Professor,” but that’s only because I teach Jiu-Jitsu at a college where I work as a professor, so students call me by that title anyway. I’m always happy to be called “Coach” or “Jim.” I always address my son’s Jiu-Jitsu coach as “Professor” in front of his students (especially the kids) so that they will have good habits, but I call him by his first name everywhere else, since I have known him since we were both purple belts.

I only teach adults (college age and above), but in the gyms where I have trained that had kids, all of the adults automatically outranked all of the kids in terms of line order. Sometimes, older and larger kids would be allowed in an adult class, but regardless of their rank, they would always go at the end after the lowest ranked adult.

Does anybody else dislike the changes to the kids’ ranks that the IBJJF made a few years back? We used to have just white, yellow, orange, and green belts, but then the IBJJF added a gray belt and three different variations for each colored belt (white stripe, solid, and black stripe). It always felt a bit McDojo to me to go from four belts to thirteen. I know that their reasoning was to motivate kids by giving them constant rank rewards, but I don’t know that it’s necessary. Kids do gymnastics, tennis, soccer, swimming, and other sports without ever being awarded rank, and it doesn’t seem to de-motivate them.

In my kids-classes it has always been white-yellow-orange-green.
Nevermind what any organization says, did or not.
No grey, no mixed up half-ranks or whatever.

Adults is what the standard is:
white to blue with some stripes before.

I think the nicest thing to do is to place him first on the line.

Also have to agree that the line formation is a bit silly.

We do lines only for seminars or special occations.
This sounds fun, but also good that you limit it for special occassions only

Well, once you teach over 40 kids in one class... Lines become very appealing.

I put my kids in this exact place: between white and blue belts, but I may decide to change that.

But I gotta ask... I have never heard the term "to bollock someone". Is this a typo, or for real? I taught English professionally for 4 years, and I thought my BrE skills were on point until now...

It's just my bad English (it's my second language). Does "to give someone a bollocking " sound better?

Lol no. But I think I get the gist?

We don't ever really use the word "bullocks" at all here in the US, so I'm a little hesitant to advise you regarding its parameters of use, but, fuck it. I'm gonna give someone a bullocking sometime soon, for sure.

Just like the white belts at your home gym, it's always the non-native speakers who come up with the most creative shit.

I believe the whole line up is silly. More to the point, I believe the whole line up and the inherent hierarchy of stripes people place on them of the same rank in the line up is dumb.

It is funny to watch grown adults get so flustered when the same rank of another adult is to their right, but feels the need to correct them to bring them to their left because they have one additional stripe than the other person.

Settle down. You are the same rank.

My opinion.

It gets even sillier at judo seminars, since there are multiple degrees of black belt and brown belt, but no stripes on the belts to differentiate ranks.

And just like that a simple question about kids grades ended up with you guys telling me how much you hate people lining up by grade, being called a professor, that you love snorting coke, that the foreigners know your own language better then you even though you teach it and that in Jimland they've got different degrees of judo brown belt. That's why I love this page! It feels just like talking with my friends. 😂😂😂😂😂

Are you saying that I'm talking bollocks or sharing my frustration with how the conversation went in this thread?

I just keep the lines in order, just so I don't have everyone facing different directions. In the Judo school that I train at, we just form a big circle in no particular ranking order(my Judo coach is even an old school black belt 8th Dan, but does it this way).
