Christian,

What if,

we allowed people to document their competition record and promotion history,

and scrapped the voting system entirely?

I know that would remove an entertaining social game, and that part of the experiment.

But we would still have the benefits of a public place to document,

and the forums.

The voting system is a fine way to highlight human social group foibles in action.

But may not provide the real value the site actually provides, and may be a distraction to that real value.

We do not need a publicly recorded and very flawed voting system,

correction: another flawed system.

This site provides tremendous value just in providing a public documentation and long tail forum functionality.

I would certainly invite you to not take my word on it,

but I would also invite you to not take your own word on it either.

Put the matter to a vote to the members, verified if you like, or all.

Why should we have the rank voting system at all?

I say this as one of the highest ranked verified by votes members on the site and one of the top 10 list of most trusted black belts by points voted.

Maybe the opportunity to document and socially network on the forums is enough.

Put another way,

Christian, as the founder of the site,

You have the most vote points,

and you are the most trusted black belt on the site.

This should be a warning

You are not the highest ranked black belt,

nor the most well competed black belt,

or the black belt with the longest career tenure.

But, you are the guy to curry favor with,

as the owner of this particular set of mats.

I suspect you are wonderful on the mats,

but your personal example probably demonstrates that people are casting votes for you to kiss your ass as the god power behind the site.

And further, even if they were voting for you because of name recognition, that is fine, we all do it, but...

No doubt there’s also ass-kissing but through his other endeavours, Christian probably knows more BJJ people around the globe than almost anybody. He has also been promoting the site in places where a ton of people are familiar with him. And he has put out content online for a long time, which makes it easy to check out his legitimacy for folk thay have no personal connection to him.

Besides: one can already use the site just for personal bookkeeping & forum discussion and choose to ignore the verification aspect. It does not disable/enable these functions.

It's a bit late to change the very foundation of the site that I've spent something like a year figuring out how to build :D

There are lots of other projects/sites/apps that has attempted to build a registry of users and their training careers; none of them have worked out. This is my shot at it and only time will tell if it works or not. So far, so good though! :)

As I see it, once the user base is big enough (any time soon, really), "verification" will only be a formality. The real power of this site is that the community checks and approves all information, ensuring that we build a site of trustworthy and properly filled out profiles. THAT will be the real value; not the "certification" (although it will also very much have it's use and validity)

All fair points.
