I don't really get the whole "give your instructor a pineapple" meme thing I see on r/bjj etc.

But having been to a pineapple plantation recently (Boa Fruta in Ponta Delgada, on the Azores), I can now say that if for some weird reason somebody wanted to give me a pineapple, I'd ask for it in a flambé. Delicious! :D

São Miguel is a beautiful island.

I used to live on Terceira for two years.
Going back soon for a visit.
My in laws have a cliffside home there and we don't go often enough. Can't wait to get back.

Oh cool! Yeah, it would be interesting to see some of the other islands. It was weirdly difficult to find a decent history book about São Miguel (in English, at least), but I saw Kindle had a handful of options written about the other islands.

I believe there are a few Youtube videos floating around with some Azorean history in general. Maybe São Miguel history as well.

I had to look this one up (not a regular Reddit user) and found this article on the matter of the pineapple gift. I think it is awesome!

BJJ and the bizarre history of the pineapple. Where did this tradition come from? - BjjTribes

These days Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is full of memes and folklore. One of the most prominent ongoing jokes surrounding BJJ is the supposed tradition of the pineapple which is given […]

Nice, good find! Next step is to find the original reddit post. I'm on r/bjj a lot, but the search function is pretty bad.

I can try a Google site search instead, where you just put site: in front of the url, then terms you want to search at the end of the url (seperated by a space). :)

I got a pineapple from one of my students the other day. It was a little strange, but I live in a strange area, so not really out of place. Glad to know it's a whole "thing"...

I’m going to make a fake story about a tradition of giving your coach a pizza. Hopefully that catches on by the time I become a black belt.

Build on the BJJ Globetrotter 10th camp pizza thing, I guess? Mine was pretty tasty, I think I got the only 'normal' 10th camp pizza at Zen Camp 2022. ;)
