Belt in the freezer

Why do some people put their belt in the freezer instead of washing it?
To me that seems alittle odd and still very disgusting that it’s not being washed haha.
Anyone have any clue where this started and why anyone does this?

That is pretty gross. Never heard of that one but I believe it.
I just wash my belt regularly. When it gets frayed I buy a new one.

That’s what I’m saying! That’s way out there putting your belt in the freezer lol
I do the same as you professor I always have a spare and cycle through them because I wash each after every use. So much more hygienic

I actually never heard that one I am still amazed people argue about not washing the belt as if their technique is going to somehow disappear with the germs

Maybe I’m the crazy one 😂
I don’t understand how people believe washing their belt “washes their technique away” so bonkers!

LOL im old school and dont wash my belt. and in my close to 10 years teaching fulltime i never had a student with a skin infection.. i think if 2 inches around your waist worries you about germs theres some bigger issue at play.. if a stripe falls off i tape that stripe back on i dont just replace it. promos are important too me and mean more than just something that holds my gi together. i dont wash it cause i think it gives people a false sense of seniority. more times than not people are judged based on how worn out their belt is and washing it is just cheating that process. every fray and tear etc on my belt is earned on the mats not the spin cycle. that being said i got 0 issues with people who choose to wash their belt i will just never partake cause it just means more too me personally.
for the freezer my guess is they do that cause the cold kills germs just the same as a wash cycle without the physical abuse. putting it in a bag and freezing it would accomplish this aswell and be sterile just saying.

Freezing it will not kill germs.

Just wash you belt with your gi. Put it in a laundry bag, superglue the stripes on if they have that much meaning for you.

If you do not wash it at least sterilize it. I will use Tide Antibacterial Fabric Spray when i do not wash my belt. Also congrats on the fact that there was no skin infections. On a side note, just remember Ring worm spores can remain alive for 12-24 months.

I'm not sure you will successfully put an end to this phenomena by neglecting to wash your clothes.

Lol never said that either. I'm not trying to change what others do. I just control what am able to.... myself and me myself I won't be partaking in washing my belt. And I'll continue to not have skin issue as much as you all wish and hope I do lol. I sincerely encourage you to look into how the mats are cleaned at your gym if you or any of your training partners get skin infections. I promise you it's not from your belt 🤣🤣

I sincerely wish all 3 of you the best of luck in continuing to stave off health issues that could potentially arise from neglecting to wash your training equipment.
Honestly, I don't think anybody who advocates for common sense personal hygiene is rooting for you or your students to come down with any sort of skin issue.
Clean mats, clean bodies, clean gis (yes, even that hallowed 2 inches of fabric) can help to ensure a sustained, pleasant training environment!

Jacob, of course we do not want to see you sick or anyone at your facility. But let me explain from someone who is susceptible to issues that a normally healthy individual might not be. I have a weakened immune system due to issues and conditions relating to my military service in the Gulf War.
If myself and gym member A rolled with you and your unwashed belt, I would be about 70% more likely to get staph then they are. Staph is not only spread from skin to skin, but fabric, even two inch wide fabric. Now you have a belt, that is dirty, you pick it up on your hands, toss it over your shoulder, in the gym bag. That belt touches all things from the mat to others skin, Gi etc. I get it you want tradition, but there are ways as I mentioned to keep it clean without destroying that tradition and not jeopardizing others health.
Now you might be of the opinion I should protect myself and it is not your responsibility, and I do. I use a skin barrier cream that was designed for wrestlers. I take steps for myself and team to make sure I do not catch or spread anything.

Yes because in must be improper hygiene somewhere else because everyone knows that microbes and germs do not breed an porous materials like a belt.
You do you and honestly I hope you never get a skin infection but I am going to continue to pay attention to all forms of cleanliness.
Ignoring scientific facts to practice superstition is fine when it only concerns you. my issue is it is irresponsible to put others at jeopardy

Infection statistics aside; if you wear ANY piece of clothing that you've been wearing in every training for years AND NEVER WASHED, that is just straight up disgusting af.
I hard pass on rolling with anyone who doesn't wash any part of their body/gear.

Yea I just can't fathom this... the other day I was wondering if I had washed my hands poorly because they smelled funky. I quickly realized it wasn't my hand, it was a hair band I had around my wrist that smelled. A tiny-ass loop of fabric that I have worn for some weeks without washing it. And it doesn't even get drenched on a sweaty mat as much as a BJJ belt does, just keeps my hair up and stays on my wrist when the hair is down.

I've had MRSA, Ringworm, Warts and Tinea Versicolor during my training life.
You never really know where you pick up these things, unless you see it on your partner and ignore it.
Since those experiences, especially when MRSA almost killed me (Antibitoics were not working), I decided that I would just wash everything I wore in training in vinegar and laundry soap everytime.
The MRSA also affected my family as I shared it with my wife and kids unknowingly.
I have not had any issues since I started washing and drying all my gear after every training session.
It is not an issue as I have multiple Gi's, Rashguards, Spats etc.
I will not train with smelly or dirty looking people.
Hygiene is super important when in such close contact with people.
Not sure if the belt makes much or any contact with my bare skin when rolling unless I grab or something.
It's not really a concern in that regard.

Glad you are better. MRSA is no joke. My son got it in his ear the last week of wrestling in HS right before the pandemic, and thought he was finally getting cauliflower ear till dr said nope, MRSA.
7 years of BJJ with nothing *knock on wood* and 2 years of wrestling got him LOL

I have 4 belts, partially because I'm an idiot and forget my belt all the time so I have a spare in each of my cars, and partly because I wash my belt after every use nad hang to dry, just like my gi. I buy a new belt every year or so, so I am either sandbagging with a brand spanking new belt that does represent how long I was at that rank or stealing valor with my ratty old several times over washed belt. I'm old enough (actually, legally old school) to remember when guys got ringworm all the time and when the state of Michigan canceled wrestling for a year due to herpes gladitorum. There was a concerted effort to get the word out that not washing your gi, shorts and rashguard was unacceptable and put your workout partners at risk. Why does anyone think your belt is any different? Fortunately, all the new guys in the sport tend to wash their belts, clip their nails, and generally are hygienic, so it is an issue I deal with less and less.

On a side not, I just watched a video on people that are extremely cheap. One man freezes all his clothes instead of washing them to save money from water and soap. He has a pair of jeans that he's had for over 20 years, and they have never been washed. He claims that they smell like new the way they did when he bought them.

I wonder how his actual smell is itself after not washing his clothes for 2 decades.

One possible alternative to washing your belt is long exposure to a high quality UV lamp. Personally I think washing a belt is a lot easier.
But I grew up with the "white belt to brown belt to black belt" myth from never washing away your knowledge. So I didn't begin to wash my belt until much later than I would like to admit. As far as losing stripes is concerned, it was never an issue in judo were there were no stripes, but as a black belt in BJJ, I get them embroidered on, so it's not a problem to wash them.
