As you guys all love to be outraged at IBJJF, let's get on it. What's everyone's opinion on changing the rules for legal uniforms and banning half of the gis which were still legal 2 days ago? (Conspiracy theories welcome and declarations of training only no gi because every one in California walks around shirtless are welcome as well)

I'm looking at your images, and I'm not able to tell what the issue is. Would you be able to contrast the previous requirements with the current requirements, for us laymen?

The rules around the gis used to be quite vague before. They suddenly became very specific. For example they used to say that the fabric can't be "so thick or hard as to impede an opponent from gripping it." Now they say "GSM of the jacket must be 380-650g/m2, pants 220-300g/m2". That excludes most of the lightweight gis available on the market, which people were buying in order to make weight for competitions. Many of the kimono producents will be affected by this. They also tell you how exactly the jacket should be built, where the reinforcements should be.

My opinion? Fuck the IBJJF. Not very nuanced, but hey. 😁
No one's seen you wearing IBJJF-legal gi in the last 10years so I was expecting your opinion to lean this way but I didn't expect it to be so strong. I thought you'll be more like "Perhaps we should all make love to Master Carlos Gracie Jr. Oss."

I guess I was wearing an all white gi at Zen Camp last year, because that's sort of the BJJ Globetrotters equivalent of a Gracie Barra camp, where Christian attempts to make everybody look the same? :P

Roger also wasn't super pleased I wasn't wearing a white gi at the RGA Bucks grading a couple of months ago, so I might have to dig out that Zen Camp gi again. ;)

So do they have some sort of gsm measuring stick thingy now?

I'm sure it's highly specialized training that all the refs receive...

Okay, I have some doubts regarding the implications of "solid details in colors other than the color of the kimono will not be allowed.", does this mean that embroidered logos in different colors of the kimono will not be allowed (say, like the classic gracie barra red over white logo)?

I was thinking exactly the same and I've got no clue. I guess it wouldn't be that bad after all for gracie barra because their competitors would have to buy new competition gis. I don't know though what they mean by "solid details".

The only other thing I can think of are the stitches on the lapel/collar/rip-stop pants...

I mean, upon closer inspection, it looks like it's pretty much identical.
Basically the biggest changes are the weight of the gi, the space throughout the whole arm has to be 7cm, 7cm in space from the ankle to the knee, no contrast stitching, and patches have to be a specific material. They also seem the be sticklers about the manufacturers labels as well. They basically want everyone to wear a judo gi.

Exactly this! In judo, we have some of the most stringent uniform rules you can possibly imagine. There is a tool called a “sokuteiki” (pictured here) that is used to measure every aspect of the uniform to guarantee it is legal for competition. At big tournaments, only certain “approved” gis are allowed, and there is quite a lot of money involved in the approval process. It looks like Jiu-Jitsu is going down the same path. The next step: ban all takedowns that involve touching the legs. ;)

It is! I remember when I was still doing Judo, the Mizuno Eurocomp Gi was the closest to a Brazilian Cut Gi. It was one of my favorite gi's to train in for Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. No longer allowed I guess since Mizuno stopped making them.

It is a concerning move to Gracie Barra-ify the whole of jiu jitsu. However, these silly rules are merely IBJJF shenanigans. We can fight this kind of nonsense by refusing to engage with the IBJJF.

Much easier for me to do in the UK (where the IBJJF is fortunately only a very minor player), but still. The power is in our hands and more specifically, our wallets. If people don't want this bullshit to escalate, STOP GIVING THE IBJJF MONEY. :D

It's quite amazing how they come up with new money-grabbing schemes almost every year.

There's still no logical reason for the nogi equipment. The "coloured" corner has to wear the ankle band regardless.

I wonder if Christian will change the cut of his gi's so people can compete in Globetrotter gi's.

I think the comp gis should still qualify?

Yeah I don't see why it shouldn't.

@Jay where do you see no contrast stitching allowed?

I think it is one of the possible interpretations of "Solid details in colors other than the color of the kimono will not be allowed.", second sentence of section 1.1

To me it seems like the space between the arm and the gi has to be a minimum of 7cm. That's a big gap.

1.1 Kimono Jacket - Solid details in colors other than the color of the kimono will not be allowed.
