Saw this online, 20 years to blue belt. My only response was, congrats dude.
I was surprised to find other comments that were not as edifying.
What do you think ?

Are the 20 years on the martial arts mat in total or just in BJJ? If he competed, his academy would be getting a really bad sandbagging reputation if he really had average 20 year frequent trainer development but held back on white belt. Also within the academy, I have difficulties seeing no one would react with a frequent white belt kicking the butts of those who have been practicing for 10-15 years. So I think it is in great parts self correcting and I doubt there has really been 20 years of weekly BJJ training in this case. Maybe on and off (mostly off).

Maybe 20 years with huge gaps In between. People tend to say…. “I have been training Jiu-Jitsu for 20 years,” but in reality they quit a couple times but they are counting from the first time they stepped on the mats. I’ve seen it countless times after someone quits at blue belt. “Oh man I been training for 13 years,” no man you quit at blue belt after 1 year.

Hmm. Sandbagging never crossed my mind. It struck me as a guy who never gave up. Maybe I’m just a glass half full kind of guy.

Exactly. People talking about sandbagging and crushing brown and black belts are missing the obvious.
Guy most trained for a bit and quit. Started and once or twice and got a blue bent in 2years or so.
20 years since starting not 20 years of training

Thread title was misleading, this is not the conversation I came for.

I cannot tell you how many people within my own gym tell me about how they were a "ten year blue belt" or "15 year purple." Always failing to add the disclaimer of they were not actually active during that whole duration of time. Reminds me of guys who only showed up for promotion ceremonies and my usual follow up response: "I thought you died?"
But everyone wants recognition it seems.

It took me 37 years to get my blue belt
I’m glad you got it. Congratulations. I know I will enjoy mine if and when the day comes.

Yeah, that seems the most likely answer, or they are including 18 years of judo or something like that. I don't find it plausible that somebody could consistently train for 20 years at a legit gym and not be at a higher level than blue.

I’d still be a white belt if people didn’t feel sorry for me.

20 years consistent seems unlikely. 20 years on and off - sure. By that measure I'm a 16year white belt. 😀

I like to go in the opposite direction, I retroactively add up all my time before I stepped on the mats in 2009. Henceforth, I thus identify as a coral belt.

I don't feel sorry for you. You like a toe fugus that keep coming back! You just do quit! 🤣

That’s the nicest thing anyone has said to me this week.

Has to be gaps in there! I don't think he's being very forthcoming with the details of that 20 years on the mat thing. It's either he's BS'ing, really sucks, or sandbagging!

I'm willing to bet his training has been at a much slower pace with some gaps in between and that's fine. Not everyone is looking to be a world elite competition phenom. 20 year is better late than never, and hopefully his skills are aligned with his belt color. Maybe he has really good fundamentals, and can teach new students.

This is why I got my students, if they wanted a measure of how long they've been doing BJJ and to accurately measure themselves, to count hours of mat time, rather than picking a date and counting from there. Huge level of difference between 20 years of training 4-5 hours a week vs 20 years of maybe 1-2 hours a fortnight or month.
