Hello all,
I hope everyone is doing well. I would like to get everyone's opinion on the matter to maybe help me figure out what to do. A year ago, my jiu jitsu academy closed down. I took a month off, due to the fact I had work like crazy in October. November hit and I went to this other local gym ran by a friend/former training partner of mine. His gun has different beliefs, different system, etc. I trained that day, bout had my arm taken off by a guy who didn't know how to do a proper armbar, and went home afterwards. I haven't been back since due to the fact that A. I don't agree with the style of teaching, and b. I feel still loyal to my coach from my academy even though the academy has been closed for a year or so. This new gym is the closest to me, and fits my schedule, but I'm just not to sure about it. I'd like as many people's opinion on the matter as possible. Thanks!

Sounds like the arm bar was fairly effective after all, lol.
Idk, maybe give them another shot? I guess I'm maybe not understanding what the alternative is. No jiu-jitsu at all? If that's the case, I'd try and work it out with them.
You should have the right to spar with whoever you want, so maybe it's worth it to talk to the instructor and clearly state your boundaries?
I'm not sure where the loyalty component comes into play with all of this though...

You coach had to close his gym and as a coach the last thing I would want is someone to stop training. If it was me I would be happy you were training.
I would give the place another shot

Tap quicker?
I would give the spot a 30 day trial run. If it is not a spot you feel comfortable with then you have all the empirical data available to make an informed decision. You cannot make the decision base off a few sessions. Sometimes you run into folks who just suck and others who are the best in the world.

I had a similar situation. I was driving 9 hours a week to train when the gym "switched" affiliation and ownership(some very dirty stuff went down to make that happen). After that happened, i added BJJ to my Karate school and joined an association that was recommended to me by my coach at the time. It turned out to be a huge mistake, but a lesson was learned. If it weren't for those events happening, I would not have started training under my current coach, which has been the best thing in my BJJ journey.
if the option is available, test out some other places or maybe open your own garage gym.

If you don't like the teaching style and there are other options, go somewhere else. You said it was the closest rather than the only one, so I'm assuming there are other gyms around?
Unless I'm missing something, this seems like a very easily resolved question. :D
