Someone's having fun, I face the same dilemma, thought I'm having video's and pictures to show my credentials. Funny as I'm verified by Finnish jiu-jitsu federation and listed there and here, but Jonah is not pleased with the names I've given. :)
I've added my instagram and youtube channels and some pictures to give more information. And I've rolled with a lot of people on seminars, open mats, globetrotter camps etc. :)

Johan, your university degree comparison is ridiculous. There do exist legit Masters programs in the world which are 1 year long and which are 3 years long. There is no unified measure to what a degree is.
And if you adhere your standard ONLY to IBJJF compliance then firstly, these standards have been changing over the time and secondly, IBJJF is a private company. Why should they have a dominant say in what are BB requirements? That'd be like saying only University of Karolinska standard is a true Masters program standard and e.g. UK ones don't count as true Master's degrees.

@ Jari:
You can make Your future reverification-processes faster (and easier to get some votes), when You pay a bit more in here. What means to take some time and do verification-work vice versa for other profiles on beltchecker.
In case of reverification-votes it is not only the evidence of rank what leads to my points for example. It is the engagement in profile-checks, too.😉

I wasn't originally sure on the best policy on verification, so I've only verified people I've rolled with, or seen on the mats. I'm not worried about not getting verified, but good idea to verify more people by checking their profiles, thanks. :)

Yeah, and there's lots of variety on belt levels, just like there is on university degrees.
My understanding is that 2nd degree requirement for black belt promotion is new in Ibjjf, I wonder how long it's been like that.
I haven't registered my belt there but I was told I will get needed signatures from Brasa coaches years ago, but the need never came up, and I hate to bother people.

As far as I can remember, the 2:nd degree requirement existed with CBJJ already before IBJJF was founded. Do you have any indications that the even earlier jiu-jitsu federation of Guanabara (which introduced the BJJ black belt in 1967) was any less strict?
Like it or not, but Beltchecker's belts for the different degrees are identical to those of IBJJF, which can be seen clearly on the belts above black. See the attached picture and also compare to the belts of SJJIF. Beltchecker was founded after Globetrotters were kicked out of IBJJF and IBJJF is also the only organization named in the FAQ, so I don't think it's much of a secret that Beltchecker was founded with the intention of being a free and community driven alternative to IBJJF, although it was also part of the vision that the community would take it from there, which we are doing right now as we're discussing what is reasonable criteria for having a formally legit black belt, which can be verified.
I will continue voting according to the alternative-to-IBJJF-paradigm. IBJJF criteria are not the only ones, but is there really any other BJJ organisation that would view a black belt as legit if the promoting instructor himself had only had his black belt for a year, as in your case?
Why would alternative criteria to those of IBJJF be less strict and not more strict? Within Alliance, which you previously trained under, the criteria is 3:rd degree instead of 2:nd degree (at least in my lineage), which I'm perfectly fine with. That is 50% longer than the IBJJF standard. But you think the criteria should be 80% shorter than IBJJF, i.e. only a year after ones own BB before promoting others? Would you also argue for it to be legit for someone to promote some one else to BB half a year after getting their own BB? A month? A week? A day after?
Yes, you're listed by the Finnish BJJ association, but didn't you say Comprido signed off on your belt there, e.g. was the formal promoting instructor? If so, why not just make it so on Beltchecker as well - if you have his signature on him promoting you, you could present that as evidence here as well.

You have the right for your opinion and I'm not looking to say a black belts without 2 degrees should give black belts but I've seen it happen and care more about my technical skills, which you also verified.
Since I'm not registered belt in IBJJF, in their books I'm not any belt yet, so I'll just have to be satisfied of having people back my profile based on skills, not just on credentials in here.

Not getting your evidence in order before falling outs, instructors going underground (in one way or another) etc. is always a risk taking and those people shouldn't expect to have their degrees uncontested, especially if they voluntarily submit their belt history for public inspection, as you do when you become a member of Beltchecker.
I was around in BJJ in the early 00:s days and I too was offered a BB from what I didn't see as a legitimate person to promote to one (besides loyalty issues to my long time instructor). If you take shortcuts, there should be consequences. There's really too much upvoting people just to be nice, to get an upvote in return or by some logic that there's not that much difference between a legit 4:th degree BB and a 6:th degree BB (although based on lies - see https://www.beltchecker.c[...]p;id=63963).
If you're up for BB, you really should do (have done) your homework on the generally accepted criteria (that were the same in the early 00:s). No big surprises there.

I remember when my old coach, Marcelo Mafra, was handing out black belts when he was just a 1st degree in 2015, and still is a "1st degree" under ibjjf records last i checked. I think he got around this by having Lucas Leite sign off on the paperwork since he was a 2nd degree at the time.

There has been quite a lot of "signing off" and it's problematic that IBJJF then are not transparent with their records, so it's not displayed in their registry who was the promoting instructor. That is not the same as IBJJF approving their 0:th or 1:st degree instructor as haven given the promotion, even if the promoted person believes and claims that now. Of course, there are also "signing off" cases where there has never been any registration of the degree and the promoting instructor was perhaps unclear to the promoted person who the real promoting instructor was but felt it was ok with promoting because of the backing of the more senior BB.
If you then know you'd react very strongly to getting your degree disputed, I personally think it's a very bad idea to become a member of Beltchecker.

I think it's easier to just agree that we disagree and let the site do it's work.
A belt and a degrees value is not in the fabric of the belt but in the person who carries it. If people wish to dispute my rank based on a technicality, I'll just have to go for more competitions and globetrotter camps and convince people manually to vote for me just based on skill and behaviour. 🙂
I could choose the easier way you suggested to just ask get my original promoter changed, but I accepted my belts and degrees from people I respect and feel changing that would be chickening out of how things actually happened. Not how I roll.

I still think Johan is doing a lot of gods' (small g, plural :p ) work and it's fine for a profile to have up and downvotes and everyone can see ppls reasoning, discussions etc.

Fun fact: If we go by the IBJJF standard, which dictates for example "Brown belt degree should be held for 1 year unless person is adult brown belt world champion. "
https://ibjjf.com/news/ib[...]iod-update
Tom Mäenurm was a brown belt less than 11 months when Priit promoted him to black belt in 2022. Tom doesn't compete in IBJJF and therefore isn't IBJJF world champion, but has otherwise very impressive competition record. Tom was also promoted straight to purple from white belt. Really nice person off and on the mats and definitely technical level is black belt in most person's opinion. :)
Looking to see whether Johan downvotes Tom or bends the rules in this case. :)

And another question, as Johan is verifying Tom now: most people think BJJ as a grappling art where you train and compete with a GI. I've seen Tom only training nogi. Never seen him with a gi.
I don't have the patience to go through IBJJF rules on this, can someone tell me how it's in the rulebook? Do you have to train with GI to be promoted belts on IBJJF?
And also. My criteria for vote on a belt is actual sparring or competition footage or personal experience. So I can't verify you Johan yet. Can you provide some video of you rolling with someone you consider good.
Here's footage of me rolling with combat jiu-jitsu rules, Heikki got his black belt this year, he's 15 years younger (I'm 45, he's 30) and 8 kilos heavier (I'm 77, he's 85) than me, and active competitor: https://youtu.be/pZYpLqbsnrQ
Here's me competing under 88 kilos ADCC North european open: https://youtu.be/BEIYtiTBalU
And teaching technique with a GI, including positional sparring: https://youtu.be/oHN4ZcSEAaI

To help Johan to form his vote, he asked why Tom wasn't promoted to blue belt earlier, I would have to guess it was possibly because he was training in MMA gym, so he couldn't be promoted in BJJ. https://www.sherdog.com/f[...]rm-236621#!
After all, if Johan bases his vote on a ruleset, Tom possibly started training regularly under a BJJ black belt around 2019, so disregarding the minimum times of blue belt and brown belt are basically violating IBJJF rules even thought I (and Priit, and many others) consider Tom's abilities to be of a black belt.
Do we vote by competence or do we vote by a ruleset of a private company? I think BJJ is more than just IBJJF, as we have people competing in various other rulesets too, and can be black belt level while not being IBJJF recognized (I'm not, Priit is not, not all of my coaches are). We bring the value of this site down if we vote just by credentials and not by skill. This site becomes a stamping machine for people showing certificates.
Here's 2 clips from me sparring with Tom, I think we rolled for 30 minutes straight on a Globetrotters camp. The whole exchange was actually pretty nice:

Well, of course this alternative to IBJJF should not vote only by IBJJF-ruleset.
But to be the „better“ alternative beltcheckers standards to get verified should not be lower than IBJJF-standards.
There is a simple solution not only keeping a standard of a commercial company like IBJJF but increasing it:
To be able to individualize decisions for verification (beyond the corruption-leaded individual exceptions which sometimes happens in commercial systems…)!
If we orientate our verifications at global (and IBJJF) settings but keep the ability to differ (via transparent disputes like we do), it is of course a higher standard.

As Sebastian wrote, why shouldn't we hold higher standards than IBJJF if we want Beltchecker to be a better alternative to IBJJF? Only voting for those you personally know the skills of sounds like a great idea, but you don't need to have sub IBJJF standards on credentials for that.
I've only ever upvoted no-gi BJJ belts when it's been very transparent that it was a 10:th planet belt. Other than that, BJJ BB for me implies gi skills and credentials. If you're kicking ass (including mine) on the mat, with background in e,g, UFC or olympic wrestling, but can't demonstrate gi fundamentals when asked, what would you even do with a BJJ belt? If your rashguard needs to be held together by a belt, it might be time to buy a new rashguard instead. The least you can do is to give it the usual 4½+ years and mature into the art, not only in skills and mat performance. If you care enough about gi that you actually become innovative far beyond average with it, I might personally slightly shorter time than 4½ years since BJJ start, but rushing through the degrees without even training with the gi? That's just silly.

So, what will you do when verifying Tom? Do you think he is not worthy of a black belt because his interests are different from yours?
If you don't wish to downvote him and skip verification as seems he is also not compliant with your standards, I think you should also skip my verification. Of course, things are up to you: you can also say he is not a real BJJ black belt, just a very good grappler whose teacher didn't follow IBJJF standards enough to be verified here by you. Then we agree to disagree.
I wonder what I am in your books, as I've learned jiu-jitsu for 22 years from jiu-jitsu professors, all of my belts are from BJJ black belts and most of the way I'm fighting can be verified to be BJJ. I'm not an olympic wrestler saying I have BJJ black belt.

I'll wait a while and see what he answers. According to his Promotion history, he was in BJJ for more than 4½ years before getting black, with time in degree on different belts evening out. Although I still don't agree with skipping blue belt, time from beginning of the purple belt semester to black belt is four years. So is he lying about training BJJ for more than half a year prior to that? Otherwise, I would consider him legit based on BJJ credentials.
If Priit is promoting in BJJ solely based on no-gi skills and merits, without transparently profiling his BJJ as being no-gi (like 10:th planet has done), that could potentially make me question BJJ degrees awarded by him, but that is digging that I leave to someone else to do and share.

The cool thing about this platform is that it allows for the community to debate and choose their own standards for promotions. Anyone (who agrees to not be anonymous and have a minimum of experience, i.e. blue belt), has a voice to cast their vote on how they think promotion standards should be.
If enough people vote to agree that 0 degree black belts can promote black belts, then so it is. If enough people vote to agree that you can go from purple to brown in one month, then so it is. And so on, and so on.
I don't really have a point here other than this platform is fundamentally designed for people to disagree but it still leads to a decision on standards for things through majority vote.
Now, continue disagreeing and debating!! 😄

To be exact, i got promoted by 2 black belts awarding me the rank of a black belt, and 6 years later I got promoted to 2nd degree by a 3rd degree black belt (who knows my previous promoters), and said that towards the federation, a 6th degree BB is the technical promoter before he gets his certificate for 3rd degree.
My actual promoter has voted for me here and verified the promotion too. My name and my technical promoters information are in the Finnish BJJ federation's page too. :)
And here we have an swedish Alliance 3rd degree black belt saying a Brasa 2nd degree black belt is not valid, but bends his own rules when validating a known competitor. Haha, hoped the team rivalry wasn't a thing in 2023. :D Luckily I'm vouched by some finnish who got their black belts from Alliance.

So, does something in the IBJJF rules say the times can be shorten, or do they bend when you see fit? :D

My name and my technical promoters information are in the Finnish BJJ federation's page too. :).
You haven't written your "technical promoters" in your promotion history on Beltchecker, so are my standards really different from those of the Finnish BJJ federation, if they too only accepted a 2:nd degree or higher official promoting instructor?
Within the 4½+ years up to black, I usually have no problem with time variations, if the times even out in total. Same with degrees on BB. I've verified members who got degrees on their BB far to early but where it has evened out later. I've also verified marginally too early where it has been motivated e.g. by logistical reasons (visiting instructor from far away, who doesn't visit often).
IBJJF themselves are in my opinion less strict where it really matters and I've found evidence of both belt skipping for students of instructors close to IBJJF and routinely approving "signed off" degrees from instructors who have obviously never met who they "promoted" (Globetrotters were kicked out of IBJJF for less). Also, once they have issued a certificate, they won't revoke it or answer any questions about it, even when proof has surfaced that puts the promotion into question. But that's a discussion for another day.
Btw, I have disputed Alliance lineage members as well. No proofy, no honey.

Finnish federation lists Bruno as the person who graduated me as a black belt, so there we have a regular black belt accepted. Comprido is probably listed as the second degree promoter due to the graduation happening in his seminar.
Here we have Jyri's Facebook post about my promotion to second degree: https://www.facebook.com/[...]EriCtgy8Dl
You do understand your "if the times even out total" is not a IBJJF rule, so you are just using the IBJJF rules as an excuse here. You bend your rules the way you wish. I do believe team is irrelevant here, this is just how you play.
