As a young competitor that attends a family fitness gym, how do I make the most out of my current gym?

Hey guys!
So I have run into a situation where I have come to really love the sports side of BJJ, I'm always learning and trying new things. I compete every month sometimes twice a month and I'm always looking to cross-train at other gyms for more looks and experience. However, back at my home gym, there aren't too many people like me. The other young guys are simply there just to learn the self-defense aspect and the older guys well they want to have hard roles and get after it, but they're old and have families so a lot of times they aren't there to give those roles or they cut back and have to take it lighter. My professor offers competition roles, but a lot of his time is spent with the other teammates covering techniques or just doing other professor duties. I don't want to leave the gym because I feel that I have started my journey here and I want to stay with this team as long as possible, but what can I do here to continue to grow and maximize my training and growth at a gym where competition and sport BJJ isn't the main focus and its more family self-defense?

Your first academy is usually just the one that had the best search engine optimization when you looked for a place to train. It doesn't mean it is the optimal place for you, long term. This can be in terms of vibe, type of training, personalities or your goals. Everyone will ultimately find where they fit in the best and it doesn't have to be where they started.
Sounds like your current gym doesn't match what you're looking for. There's nothing wrong in telling them that in a nice way and move on. It happens all the time and it should be a completely normal and drama-free thing for all parties involved.
Best of luck!
