Now and then we see the argument in Jiu Jitsu marketing material that it's one of the fastest growing sports. These stats are interesting and yes, you can expect PickleballChecker.com to launch any time soon.

Also this:

The 10 Most Popular Sports in America by Number of Participants

1. Bicycling on road/paved surface: 43.55 million
2. Bowling: 42.29 million
3. Freshwater/other fishing: 41.82 million
4. Basketball: 28.15 million
5. Golf on a nine- or 18-hole golf course: 25.57 million
6. Tennis: 23.6 million
7. Table tennis: 15.82 million
8. Off-course golf: 15.54 million
9. Baseball: 15.48 million
10. Saltwater fishing: 14.34 million

Fucking BOWLING, though????

'murica, fuck yeah! Only there would fishing, bowling, pool/snooker or golf be considered sports.

I think jiu-jitsu is still one of the faster growing martial arts for sure, so marketing it as such is accurate.

Fishing is a huge sport here. One of my clients had a good living as a professional fisherman. The gear he had, including stuff he used to film himself, was INSANE.

Pool / snooker: I have made more money in a pool league than I have in any other sport. The only downside to it is you can easily kiss away $500 for just a cue stick.

For what it’s worth, the IOC considers chess a sport. I wonder if they test chess players for steroids. 🤔

Yes they do! :D

Well not actually steroids, but they do test for stuff which makes concentration better, basically same stuff that is used for ADHD treatment. Proven to improve your mental performance.

I wonder if that would make you better in jiu-jitsu, if you'd be able to concentrate on skill acquisition better.

I think that they’re probably not worth the risk: https://fherehab.com/lear[...]tudy-drugs.

Also, I now have a mental image of a chess player snorting lines of Adderall before a competition with “Eye of the Tiger” blasting in the background. 😆

They’re known as “study drugs,” but just how effective are amphetamines at boosting academic performance? Get the answers.

I have never heard of pickleball
I hadn't until this summer. I think it's only just hit Canada. Yet another racket sport for the rich.

That's what you do when you're bad at golf, I guess?
I thought BJJ was what you did when you suck at golf because I really suck at golf and have no patience for it

Wow who would have thought Pickleball started in the mid 60's! I had heard of it, because I live in a state they call "heavens waiting room" and all the old retired people here have played for years. They just started to open indoor facilities so they can play in the comfort of the air conditioning. At least they are doing something with those old abandoned warehouses!

The opposite to on-course golf... 😁

The number of people training MMA is always WAY smaller than the number of people training BJJ everywhere I’ve seen.

I don’t know how they calculated these numbers but I can’t help but think the MMA numbers are wildly inflated. Maybe this is from a survey and people are checking what they WANT to do?

Yeah, top golf is interesting. I get the appear of off course golfing, but I always just called it by the old traditional term:
The range.

But the off course had taken off because you don't have to worry about walking a few miles, you get to eat, drink, and shoot golf. I think they have taken notes from the bowling scene and made it work with golf.

Mind sports actually require such intense concentration that they are just as calorie intensive as many physical sports. Go, chess, poker all qualify as legit sports in my book.
And Finland boasts the Hobby Horse riding world championships, so let's not criticize the sports of America, eh? (:

Mark, that video made my night. I kept waiting for hobby horse jousting, but sadly, the video ended before I was satisfied. :)
