Being awarded multiple black belt degrees at the same time

I noticed a downvote that stated the reason for it being that the downvotee had been awarded multiple black belt degrees at the same time, despite the required time having passed to claim those degrees. (I don't believe this was a genuine reason, but that's not the point.)
I thought this was pretty much considered universally okay? Coming from a small and remote country, same thing happened with my coach, as his Brazilian promoter didn't have a chance to travel to Finland for a long stretch, so my coach missed the 1st degree promotion when it was due, and was then promoted directly to 2nd degree when they finally met again, since the required six years had passed. In these kind of cases, it would be petty to award only the next degree, then make the black belt wait for another three years to claim the 2nd. After all, the "survival stripes" indicate only pretty much time spent as an active black belt.
Anybody here actually think being award multiple BB degrees at the same time goes "against the rules"?

I don't think it is against the rules. I believe you are referring to Johan Nyh saga and it seems it is making a ripple effect by creating multiple threads.
Some say Johan is an attention whore and some say he is just Johan, an anomaly in BeltChecker.
What ever he is, there seems to be life in this forum after all, which is great. All those "human experiment" professors are rubbing their hands together.

But is you are speaking of Johan ( of course not the whale guy ) he quotes IBJJF equivalents to justify in his attempts to steer the site

I've seen it happen before and honestly I don't see the issue with it.
If you are the type to wait for your instructor to award your degrees then why not.
Sometimes, especially during the Covid craze many instructors and their affiliate students could not get together so promotions were put on hold.
It's a non issue because all promotions are between the instructor and the student.

I have seen this done. I was at Alliance headquarters and watched my original coach go from no stripes to 3 stripes at the hand of Master Jacare who conferred with Fabio and Gigi about their opinions. He had put in the time, but because of politics and no affiliation for many years, didn't have a master above him who would hand out stripes.
I think it depends if we're consenting to IBJJF for everything, or if we take the lineage of our promoting or adopted instructor in higher regard.

I too have seen it on multiple occasions (including on the first BB in Finland, if I remember correctly). Even with previous stripes granted from afar, we were two BB:s from 2014 on Gigi's latest seminar in Finland who both, independent from each other, had never put on the stripes until meeting him in person again. When you're loyal to your long time instructor, that is more important than slapping on stripes as soon as possible. And I don't believe for one second that anyone here thinks that makes anyone worthy of a downvote.

I have seen it done by a well known and respected person in the year if our Lord 2023.
I have also heard stories of Helio doing this as well. I heard him completely side-step ibjjf rules, according to his kin.
I think stripes and degrees are silly anyways, but that is just me.

Yes I have also heard that Helio and Carlos basically promoted themselves.
"And I don't believe for one second that anyone here thinks that makes anyone worthy of a downvote."
Yes not only what is good for the site and integrity of the sport but also insight into the mind of others. Johan (not the whale guy)
for president to lead us out of the BJJ dark ages and into the light.

It is certainly common to be given multiple stripes at lower level than black belt. Sometimes it is because someone had to miss a stripe promotion, and other times because the qualifications simply deserve it. I had no stripes on my brown belt when I was promoted to black belt because coming from a judo background, I made it clear to my instructor that I didn't feel the need for stripes and they felt "weird" to me. Since with BJJ, once you earn your black belt, all further promotions are based on time, it seems totally reasonable that someone should be promoted to the appropriate level if they have served the time and are active in the discipline. Personally I felt that I should have my promotions given out by my instructors even past black belt, but that is a personal preference, and my instructor is at the same school where I teach, so distance is not a factor. If I were to use time in grade BJJ standards for my judo rank, I would currently be a 9th degree (9 dan) black (red actually) belt.

Maybe a more appropriate way of documenting these situations would be to add the “Time Served” date on each stripe with an explanation in the comments that, your instructor gave them all to you at one time however he was doing so retroactively do to your time served. This would make more sense in my mind and maintain the three year gap rule. What say you??

I say that would just be silly. To my knowing, no one on Beltchecker has ever downvoted anyone for this given reason before and probably no one ever will again, without just wanting any kind of reason to poorly excuse a revenge vote.
Should we also be downvoting those on Beltchecker who were promoted by a 2:nd and not a 3:rd degree or higher BB, if they haven't been registered on Beltchecker with any of their previous belts before?

I’m not sure about the 2nd degree question, I was just proffering a solution to the problem that had issue with the concurrent dates. But it is you promotional history and you get to decide how to reflect that in your profile, no question of you being deserving of it on my end.

If you look at the background to these downvotes, it will be quite clear that they would just downvote me on whatever other issue instead. There's already downvotes pointing to the Alliance founders not being members on Beltchecker as a reason. Even if they all joined and verified me, I would be downvoted because Rolls has never been on Beltchecker or whatever their imagination would come up with. Not going to waste time doing that dance.

Which part of Devin or my logic is inconsistent? Inconsistent with your promotion beliefs, maybe, but thats why we each have a vote and not you.
You revenge downvoting him, though, is pretty hypocritical of your own stated stance Johan, unless you can read his mind or something.
And Tatu, you can believe whatever you want. Not being honest or forthcoming with my opinion isn't something I'm accused of often, in fact it's usually more that I should keep my opinions to myself.
His profile was alerted to me when he downvoted me, otherwise I'd have zero reason to click on his name. However, once seeing his profile, I saw that it wasn't consistent with how I think stripes or belts should be awarded so I downvoted it. I honestly thought he was just a troll account because I wouldn't have thought someone would seriously claim they were promoted by their "professor" over the internet after being extremely "loyal" to them by not training with them once for 5 or so years.
Though, to the point on standards, having professors internet promote people and not train with them is how the IBJJF justified the BJJ globetrotters losing their affiliation status
He actually removed his original downvote claim about my belt and only changed it to a revenge-revenge justification, but my downvote remains and will remain until his profile changes to not skip stripes. When that happens, regardless of how he has voted on me, I will remove my downvote. As an aside, unlike Zohan I provided the evidence he asked for (though maybe not exactly how he expected) and he has yet to really engage in good faith on his suspicious promotions and instead deflects to other people's motivations.
If you want any of my honest reasons or opinions, you can just ask me. I know it seems wild to Zohan that I don't respect or agree with his ridiculous way of getting stripes, but here we are.

I'm not sure how your phone or belt checker works, but for me it sends me something called notifications. These notifications are triggered when things, such as you voting on my profile, happen.
As I didn't know who you were, I clicked on your profile and it brought to my attention your illegitimate stripes.
Then, after down voting you, you told me to be "consistent" and downvote other people who had similar circumstances to you, which I agreed to do if pointed out to me. Shortly after that I received a message from someone showing me another profile who had also received stripes under the same circumstances I had previously down voted you for - so I also downvoted them as I had promised you I would. You should be happy about my consistency.
But as you said, this is me telling you all this again. You may disagree with my strictness on stripes and not receiving them all on the same day, but its inappropriate for you to try to leverage downvotes to get me to change that, in my opinion. Instead, Insuggest you do better and fix your promotions and I will remove my downvote, otherwise I would be allowing you to bring down the quality of belt checker and have you make this into a site where we can threaten people into verifying our belts.
It's really sad you take a legitimate downvote so personal.

So where and when did you pick up this claimed idea of yours about the stripes? From Chris Haueter or another of your past instructors? From IBJJF.s criteria? Or just out of thin air, when it suited your needs?

It doesn't really matter where I get my criteria from, since it's my criteria and my vote. That has literally nothing to do with my legitimate issues with your promotion history that you havent adequately explained, or your petty revenge downvotes.
I'm sorry you and your family want to be higher stripped black belts and didn't spend any time in the stripes before. I can't help you with that.

This is like watching real housewifes.
My former teammate was a 4 stripe purple belt and his own instructor "awarded" him his fifth. It was an not a pleasant moment when that instructor realized his mistake in front of his students standing in front of him lined up.
My point is that in my opinion stripes are kind of silly. It's also silly when grown men argue over the internet. Isn't there some kind of a middle ground here or are those trenches too deep already?
I've had a disagreement with Johan about not having my lineage up on my wall, but he voted my profile anyways. I don't think he is the Devil some claim him to be. There is always a "village idiot" in every community and they are usually harmless. 😂

I think I've already stated what I would need to remove my downvote from him and his teammates promoted under similar circumstances.
If someone had a compromise I'd entertain it, but as he is pretty bent on making it personal and trying to just insult me or claim he can read my mind that doesn't seem likely.

Fair enough.
You should also know that in this part of the world team dynamics are a bit different. For example my coach (Kari Vartiainen) received his black belt from Pedro Duarte, even though he never technically ever trained under his guidance. Duarte is the "grand master" of the team who visits big seminars. He basically approves the belt after a bunch of Hilti black belts agree that someone deserves it. With brown belts the situation is similar. For example Kari promoted me to brown belt after consulting other Hilti blackbelts.
What I've read in these forums Johan has a similar situation with his stripes. His promoter rarely visits Sweden or other Nordic countries so he gave him those stripes at the same time. Correct me if I'm wrong Johan, but that is how I understand it happened.
While all this back and forth is entertaining, it seems a bit petty at times. And that includes both parties.
Everyone have a great day. I'm getting ready (again) to watch the Unknown Soldier, since it is our independence day after all.

Yes, exactly. We didn't get any permanent BB:s in Sweden until 2004 (same year as Finland) and another couple of years, there was a lot of protectionism going on, so your own team was still your go to. Promotions were often done by proxy, though my own instructor would only promote those he knew on a personal level (which is probably why he only has three Swedish BB:s, even though he was first and most frequent to visit in the early years, while e.g. Duarte and the Vieiras have "lineage decendants" everywhere.
Because of unfortunate circumstances afflicting close ones (thus also me) hard (I don't want to go into details in public), with epicenter just before my three year mark, it wasn't really possible for me to travel to Alexandre for some time. My six year mark was in 2020, which hopefully needs no explanation why no stripes were awarded in person on time back then.
All along, I have wanted to get stripes directly from my long term instructor and only reason for any stripes from afar was to formally prepare for when the first black belts of our own would be up for promotion (I didn't even put the stripes on). Sure I've trained more with other senior BB:s after i got my BB and even if most of my expanded learning nowadays is not directly from him, the foundations for me being able to learn and develop on a more advanced level, even on my own, is because of what I have learned from him over the years. Hence me not having rushed to collect the BB stripes from someone else "on time".
Because of his own home situation, Alexandre has cut down almost entirely on other seminars than just a couple of hours long. Him still travelling to the Nordics for more extended seminars is loyalty back not least to us who have stayed with him for decades. Usually to Finland and with very short notice in advance, with varying intervals in between. So needless to say, I've seen multiple BB stripes put on by him on several occasions.

I just checked their graduation system and Section 4.1.5 states:
4.1.5 Athletes from the Black Belt rank and higher (Red and Black Belt, Red and White Belt and Red Belt):
I. The 1st (First) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 3 (three) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF.
II. The 2 nd (Second) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 3 (three) years from the previous graduation or with 6
(six) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF.
III. The 3 rd (Third) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 3 (three) years from the previous
graduation or with 9 (nine) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF.
IV. The 4 th (Fourth) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 5 (five) years from the previous
graduation or with 14 (fourteen) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF.
V. The 5 th (Fifth) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 5 (five) years from the previous
graduation or with 19 (nineteen) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF.
VI. The 6 th (Sixth) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 5 (five) years from the previous
graduation or with 24 (twenty four) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF
You have to pay your yearly dues to the IBJJF (Section 4.2 - proof of activity, basically lists things where you either pay or get others to pay under IBJJF), then you can either slap a degree every 3 years or N degrees every Nx3 years.
The only requirement for a promoting professor listed I found is for the black belt, not the stripes. So, as long as you pay your dues (affiliation + 1 of the three optional trainings provided by them, Section 5) the IBJJF is okay with both "time-spent" and multiple degrees being awarded at the same time.
Now, what should a black belt degree mean? As you get older your body deteriorates, your reflexes, flexibility, strength... all get weaker, so you actually become a worse athlete, however your knowledge may increase (or not, depending on how much you keep training and how you do it) and make up for some of those aspects. So, I personally don't think "time spent" should be a valid criterium for skill.
I do think however that for accumulated time dedicated to BJJ it is fair.

The 2 nd (Second) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 3 (three) years from the previous graduation or with 6 (six) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF. III. The 3 rd (Third) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 3 (three) years from the previous graduation or with 9 (nine) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF. IV. The 4 th (Fourth) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 5 (five) years from the previous graduation or with 14 (fourteen) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF. V. The 5 th (Fifth) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 5 (five) years from the previous graduation or with 19 (nineteen) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF. VI. The 6 th (Sixth) Degree can be requested after a minimum period of 5 (five) years from the previous graduation or with 24 (twenty four) years of proven activity in the Black Belt under IBJJF You have to pay your yearly dues to the IBJJF (Section 4.2 - proof of activity, basically lists things where you either pay or get others to pay under IBJJF), then you can either slap a degree every 3 years or N degrees every Nx3 years. The only requirement for a promoting professor listed I found is for the black belt, not the stripes. So, as long as you pay your dues (affiliation + 1 of the three optional trainings provided by them, Section 5) the IBJJF is okay with both 'time-spent' and multiple degrees being awarded at the same time. Now, what should a black belt degree mean? As you get older your body deteriorates, your reflexes, flexibility, strength... all get weaker, so you actually become a worse athlete, however your knowledge may increase (or not, depending on how much you keep training and how you do it) and make up for some of those aspects. So, I personally don't think 'time spent' should be a valid criterium for skill. I do think however that for accumulated time dedicated to BJJ it is fair.
Good spotted! That should debunk the claims that I'm only downvoted based on my own IBJJF equivalence criteria. Not that anyone who has revenge voted will care.
Does it say anything about degrees awarded without any outside human involvement? ;-P
