I like the idea that guard is not the only position you can score reversal points from, but this will also give 2 points if you end on top after your opponent has attempted an armbar or footlock, for instance. I don't think that makes a lot of sense.

From their Facebook page:

2024 Rules: Any Reversal will be worth 2 Points ✌️.
The AGF wants to keep to the sport’s roots which is a self defense fight. In a match athletes are awarded points for where they want to be in a fight. Traditionally, JiuJitsu has awarded the changing of top position only thru Guard play and not awarded the changing of dominant position that doesn’t come from a Guard. A change of dominance can definitely come from a position that is not a Guard and we can not ignore this fact any longer.
All grappling arts and fighting arts consider the top grappler to be dominant including the jiujitsu practitioner that is in a self defense fight. Ask that same jiujitsu practitioner who is dominant in a traditional sport setting and his answer changes. This isn’t correct and we are fixing this aspect of the sport.
In America the sport is evolving and so are the athletes techniques. The American Grappling Federation is at the spear tip of modern grappling, running international events and the evolution of the sport. This is why we are unafraid to stand by our product and the people!
Many have asked about an athlete attempting a submission and losing top position such as losing Mount while attempting an Armbar. Will this award the bottom athlete 2 points when they come on top and escape? Yes! It’s the exact same scenario now under rulesets that are Sweep based when an athlete attempts to Footlock and his opponent comes on top and is awarded 2.
As tournaments throughout the world are adopting AGF rules and functionality practices we hope to continue to make a positive impact on our community and stay current with the mindset of American grapplers!
Thank you to those who support us and Happy Holidays! We hope you appreciate the explanation and reasoning of our rule set and the direction we are trying to go in!

I personally do not like this rule change. In my opinion its gonna become boring because people will try less for submissions to prevent giving out 2points.

I asked about it in the post, because what if I get to mount and just stay there and was responded that they have their stalling rule (which is 20 seconds).

I'm still going to compete in AGF because they run really good tournaments but I think is a bummer.

I like the idea as well. I have matches when I sweep from the turtle position by trapping the arm and rolling...but it never counted as points. I think under this new ruleset that would now be points correct? It would have helped me in a handful of my matches. :)

Also, I think it will force the skills of individuals to evolve to have better control when doing submissions....which is just better jiu jitsu in my opinion.

But what if you trap the arm and roll to top from bottom mount? Or even from the back? This would also give you two points, is that fair?

I agree.

Is the AGF a big thing in various parts of the world? I've coached/competed at dozens if not hundreds of events over the years, and have yet to attend an AGF event.

2 random, semi-unrelated thoughts:

1) I understand why most bjj rule sets emphasize and reward guard play: it's what separates us from the other grappling arts.

2) I think if the standard ibjjf rule set could be altered in one, very simple way, and it would help to steer bjj into a more accurately-"self defense" sort of way, as well as simplify a number of issues: award 2 points to whoever gets on top first, like wrestling.

Sure, you would still be allowed to pull guard, but you would have to hustle immediately for a sweep or submission, because otherwise you'd be down 2 points.

The standard ibjjf rule set hates bottom turtle position. Again, it's a position that is utilized more in other grappling arts, so bjj wants to try and exploit the position, and not emphasize it.

They seem to be pretty big in the US. Almost every tournament around me is either Fuji or AGF and once a year or so a regional IBJJF. I think i've seen maybe one or two nagas but don't know anyone that went to them. Looking at their upcoming calendar they for the most part at least do 8 tournaments a month mostly spread out across central US with a handful east coast and west coast sprinkled in.

I kinda wish they’d deduct points instead of adding them. If your in top side control on me and I roll you over, you screwed up more than me succeeding. -2 points

I have been to two of them and they are one best in organization. They also bring a lot of mats and they record the matches. I really only have good things to say about them.

-2 points for pulling guard would make a LOT more sense to start with than 2 points for escaping bottom position/submission

I don’t think it makes sense for escaping a submission attempt and ending up on top. But I could see it for turtle.

It’s considered turtle guard - if you are having your guard passed and you bail to turtle there are no passing points awarded. So if I then sweep you (reversal now) from turtle, that should be points.

But awarding points for reversing from side control doesn’t make sense to me. Anywhere that the opponent was awarded points for achieving that position, you shouldn’t get points for reversing from.

Basically the reason for this rule is they don't reward advancing from a bad position. Only advancing from neutral or better. You shouldn't be rewarded for escaping or reversing where you should not have been to start with.

This rule change is actually a bad one. It will reward people that just allow themselves to be put in bad positions then go crazy to reverse and then don't do anything after reversing the position except waste a bunch of energy and get put right back into another bad one.

This doesn't penalize guard players. This penalizes older guys when they face younger opponents.

This is just going to promote spazzy guys using all their strength and energy reversing a bad position then stalling once they finally get into a good one and just trying to recover all the energy they just wasted from bad jiu-jitsu and then not wanting to take any chances on actually going for a submission. This is just really bad.

If they want to penalize guard players just give a negative point every time they pull guard. Allow slamming and so on.

If they want to see action then go full ADCC rules.

Yeah. I like it. It's much harder if the person is much bigger than you but if you position yourself right, you can do it.

Completely unrelated tangent...

Remember Brandon Quick, the guy who started AGF, got kicked out of 10th Planet for lying about his brown belt lineage?

Oh, the forums had a field day.

How so? To me they always seemed like the best organized and ran regional tournament series. I have competed in Fuji a lot more, mainly because I know the people directly who own a couple of the franchises but the only complaint i've ever had on AGF is when they changed no-gi to belt level divisions.

How I understand it, from when they first started talking about it, I believe you only get the reversal points if you end up in a dominant position like side control or mount. I would have to clarify with Chris and Brandon.

ADCC does this in their tournaments. It's only a one point deduction though. No one can pull at any point in the finals of a division. I love ADCC's ruleset because of that amongst other things.

My first thought exactly. I like the idea of rewarding top position, as a martial art for self defense or combatives, BJJ athletes as a whole are too comfortable on the bottom. We’ve seen this over and over when sport BJJ guys transition to mma and lose badly from their bad habits. Guard is a last resort to save you from a bad position. Guard is fun, I love guard, but we forget guard isn’t truly a winning position outside of sport. It gives you a CHANCE to turn a fight around from a LOSING position in a fight. But the risk of being knocked out is HIGH from guard in an MMA or even self defense setting. I’m curious to see how this rule set affects the tactics and strategies of the competitors. I can definitely see less attempts at flashy submissions and more conservative safer subs, ie. standard chokes from mount. Hopefully they remain vigilant with their stalling penalties in the event the rule changes has an unintended consequence.

Another example that comes to mind is mounted triangles. Many ppl set it up, but in a match aren’t able to get a good angle in the mount to finish, and therefore roll to their back (the guard) to finish. In a self defense scenario this isn’t necessarily the best idea right? So this rule set would favor STAYING on top after they get there. All we can do is wait and see if this rule set has a ripple effect in the community and see how it goes!

We have a lot of AGF tournaments come around this way, I'm not a huge fan of the rule change but I have no idea how to verbalize why... so I'm just going to try and break the rule this year with dumb stuff. If I can't break it and it makes the game more fun and interesting for me, maybe I'll learn to like it.

I've actually been advocating for scoring reversals, but I think personally this is too broadly defined. I think things like a reversal from Side Control should be scored because you are escaping to a superior position. But a reversal from Mount shouldn't because your not entering a superior position but a more neutral one.

And I never think scoring coming up after a submission attempt should be scored because you didn't do a reversal, you did an escape.

To me, I’m all for points for reversals. It’s done for takedowns and there are points for reversals in wrestling. I never seen points for reversals create a boring wrestling match. However, I feel we still do need some clarification on this since this is new to Jiu-Jitsu. I’m curious to see the videos explaining it all.

I agree with Jay on this. In wrestling it works. The rule for international freestyle wrestling 'the defensive wrestler who is able to effectively counter an offensive action and hold the offensive wrestler in a position of danger." is a two point action. As well as the typical reversal being worth one point. I see nothing wrong with this applied in BJJ.

I do think the videos will help us understand the intent.

As someone who has competed a lot through all the ranks at AGF…I think the new rules SUCK!

It’s less JJ and more trying to appeal to Wrestling! If I wanted to wrestle I would wrestle! I argued about the new ruleset with Brandon on FB.

While I am glad they are trying to be an alternative to the bullshit that is IBJJF, this ruleset is really discouraging me from competing.

How can you say this is for “self defense”?! Yeah you shouldn’t let someone on your mount but you f*cked up by letting him get there in the first place.

So if I take down, pass and mount that’s 9 points, but if my opp reverses, passes and mounts that’s 9-9 with me winning by refs decision. Yet I was the aggressor!? It shouldn’t be that close.

My one friend who is a ref said the good thing is it should make his job slightly easier and like another user said, it benefits the turtle guard player. So I’ll reserve some judgement.

As it stands I am not sold on the idea of rewarding someone points for escaping bad positions, seems anti-Jiu-Jitsu.

AGF is run by idiots that don't want to do actual jiujitsu. They want mma rules for jiujitsu. You make rules for what you are allowed to do. If striking isn't allowed then stop acting like it is.

What's funny is they think this rule will hurt guard players and help wrestlers. Guard players are much more likely to figure out how to take advantage of the rules just because of how they normally use strategy.

This just rewards bad Jiu-Jitsu and more stalling.

If they are hellbent on changing points they just reward points for the dominant positions. No passing points then it doesn't matter how you got to side or mount.

But really they just want to devalue sweep points when a sweep is basically a takedown. Far superior to a reversal.

They just need to learn how to pass guard and quit crying about the less athletic guys sweeping them from not using good weight distribution.

If they really want to judge by positional hierarchy, control and submissions this makes sense. +2 for a reversal sounds good to me.
