With different platforms offering bjj instructional dvds/videos, most people (Myself included) are the proud owners of some kind of bjj related dvd/video.

My question to you guys, how do you approach it, to make sure you get the most out of it?

Do you watch the dvd from start to finish?
Do you skip around in it?
Do you take notes?
Do you drill every single thing they show?
Or do you have a completely different approach to an instructional dvd?

I myself have been doing a bit of everything. Some dvd's i seen from start to finish and drilled the techniques, I felt could fit into my game at that point. Other dvd's I skipped around to find whatever i felt like I needed to drill at the moment (for example specific passing moves) - But often I feel a bit overwhelmed by all the different inputs :D

And I know, the best way to learn, is go to your gym and practice and do what your instructor are telling you. But besides that. ;)

I watch in 15min parts or so. I take notes on my phone so I don't have to carry around any paper or notebooks.
I only pick the things I feel compliment my game and physical abilities (51yrs old, physical limitations due to back surgery etc) and drill it till I get comfortable doing it.
Then I pick a whitebelt during open mat and try it on them with incremental resistance. Then a blue belt and on until I either have to go back to the drawing board or I can hit it routinely when I get into those positions. It takes quite sometime this way (sometimes over a month) just to get it integrated into my regular go to techniques. Nothing is easy in this unless you are naturally gifted.. which definitely am not.
