Hello,
While logging in to fulfill a promise I made in December to be more active here, I realized that I don't know some details related to votes and vote etiquette. In particular:
1. Are there any additional benefits to accumulating more vote points than the minimum required for verification?
2. While I'm assigning votes to unverified profiles that look legit, should I also consider occasionally voting for profiles that have already achieved the minimum required vote points?
3. Do you expect to get reciprocal votes after you vote for someone?
Let me know your thoughts - and thank you for doing so ;-)

Hi Luiz
1. No extra benefits. I had 40k points before getting promoted recently and it didn't bestow any extra honours.
2. You can vote for whoever you want even if already verified.
3. Not expected but its always nice to get voted up.
Edited to add: I will not reverify people who previously voted for me but did not reverify me when it was my turn.
Cheers

Mostly increased sex appeal.

The only benefit of having more than the bare minimum would be if someone came along and downvoted you. If you were a black belt with only the 1,000 points required a blue belt could come along and down vote you out of verified status just because they felt like it. I would like to hope that didn't happen, but it seems like there's a forum post every week about someone getting an unjust (in their opinion) down vote.

It's actually pretty meaningless. As long as you are above verified..
Honestly the only people that really are on here already train so it's not even really a benefit for bringing students in.
Honsetly the best part of the site is the interaction with other people who are into it

I think it’s nice to vote on peoples profiles if they vote on yours. It doesn’t take long at all.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer. Really good ideas to think about!
And sorry if you have voted for me and I didn't return the favor ;-) I will pay more attention to that.

Don't return, it's not a favour it just honesty. I do see you have voted on mine and thank you. Always vote with your own true thoughts.

1. One of the benefits to accumulating more points than the minimum is faster re-verification once promoted since all who previously voted for you will get notified of your promotion.
2. You can vote for whoever you want. I absolutely still vote for those who are already verified.
3. I don’t expect to get reciprocal votes but if they don’t bother voting for others, I won’t reverify them when the time comes.

On the topic of reciprocal votes (might have been a more specific thread than this, but didn't find it) and since we all(?) love statistics, I calculated that I on average have gotten around 9.7 vote points in return for every 100 up votes=17 500 vote points (many of which have taken quite some effort to research and sometimes also correspondence helping out with getting good documentation).
Anthony, with the opposite kind of voting (up voting everything that moves, having up voted around 6 000 members) has an average of around 4.3 vote points in return for every 100 up votes of his = 5 000 vote points.
Conclusions? I guess I either (or both) get more points in return on my votes because my own votes carry more points or because I more often give individual help, write personal up vote texts and I think quite a few realize there's quite work behind the vote. But it's really bad "economy" in that (if you only care about getting votes yourself) compared to using less time spitting out three or more times the number of up votes. And as a lower belt, you get a lever with more in return compared to the number of vote points you give.
Oh, and I've on average gotten 3.9 revenge vote points deducted from my total for every 100 down votes of mine. So around 1 point deducted for every 26 down votes. So y'all really need not be so scarred of using that button when there's lack of solid evidence or verifiable lineage ;-P

Meh. I just go by the "Innocent until proven guilty" philosophy. I mean, it's Jiu Jitsu... There are 10,000,000,000 more important things in my life then if someone's professor did something 15 years ago, which often leads you to tell people that they aren't the rank they claim to be. Either way, I couldn't care less if you vote back for me. :)

Up voting 6 000 times, it doesn't seem totally unimportant :-)
Voting opposites makes Beltchecker a more interesting experiment though.

As a thought experiment, what if a well decorated blackbelt joined belt checker and down voted everyone. If we all down voted him \ her back it would show them being unverified / not legit. I would suggest that as this point belt checker is not checking belts, but instead its checking something else. It might be possible to scientifically prove that Johan Nyh is a bell end, but that does not prove he isn’t a black belt.
At the same time, if a member of the community is a threat to children etc and they are a black belt, we need to let people know we don’t support them, our only option is the down vote.
This highlights that perhaps a change is required to the system?
-NB Johan Nyh I don’t think this can be proven 😊

So what would be a possible change to the system which would counter the problems you see?
Another thought experiment is more Anthonys joining Beltchecker, with a total voting power of 1175 points and up voting everyone unless it's proven they have a fake degree. Including where they haven't uploaded any evidence at all or added a lineage, so it's not possible for anyone to falsify their claims of a legit belt.
In that case, anyone non legit could just make up an instructor's name and easily get verified at any degree. Would Beltchecker be about belt checking in that case?

Well, I have a lot of down time at work while I'm waiting for bad people or paperwork to come my way. This is how I pass the time. I also watch a lot of Youtube and heckle people on T.T.. I guess it's important in the fact that I come on it when I'm bored. Of course, there are plenty of other forums I could participate in, but I like to support C.G. in his endeavors.
Let me see... Who needs a vote now?

I am not sure there is an easy answer in a community powered system perhaps these are simply its limitations. In which case you must accept that revenge voting is a part of it. I think if Gracie Barra joined onmass and followed a sticked voting policy set out by its leadership they could vote us all out like a 51% blockchain attack.

And also, I know it bugs people (such as yourself), so that just makes me want to do it more. Like I'm the type of person who would vote politically for the most unqualified asshole out there, just because it makes me laugh to see people get worked up over it. Ah the simple pleasures. :)
