Hi Admins,
Just letting you I’d legit pay money to have criminal background check verifications for upper belt/instructor profiles on here that were run in the area we are teaching in.

Been a lot of bad press about scum bag teachers assaulting their students especially underage ones and would be a great service to community and culture at large to help make sure we do our best to not only call out fakes and frauds but criminals that harm.

I know the general education tutoring teaching websites like Wyzant do this sort of thing.

Thanks!

This has of course been on my mind, but the main issue is that this is a global site and there is not really any way we can do offer it for everyone. Each country has their own system for this and many probably doesn't. So a "criminal background checked" label on a profile would only be available to users in specific countries, leaving a lot of people out who might be suspect to suspicion, if people don't know they're from a country that doesn't provide easy access to such a service.

I'm pretty sure though, that if anyone who has a known criminal history (like e.g. the guy in your image), tried to create a profile here, they would immediately be recognized and downvoted into oblivion by the community. Anyone with something to hide would very likely stay far away from a site like this in the first place.

Makes sense although I think the use of an info box that has the “US-only” or “beta” to explain the feature only available for users in certain places would still be worth while and perhaps there’s international support that could help beta in other regions?

I certainly would hope so but he still had the audacity to do it in the first place so I am not certain he would be deterred from starting a profile here

I wonder if it could be an additional add on for those who are able to get background checks. I’d love to have that as an option as I get a background check almost yearly with our current affiliation to re up my instructors training certification.

You'd be surprised how little people read even simple instructions, it is MIND blowing. If there is any chance that I put anyone at risk of being suspected of not having a clean record, then I don't think it's a good idea. I am 100% sure that even if we write "this feature is for X country only", there would still be A LOT of people who only see a profile as not background checked and get suspicious because of that.

We have to think global and long term. Not everyone are in the US (myself included) :)

Well, it wouldn't last long as he would be downvoted and called out immediately. So if he created a profile, it would do nothing but just expand the group of people aware of his history.

I'll just repost my first answer to this:

Everyone here are free to upload any certificate/proof/link to whatever background check they have - I would highly encourage that and think that would be a great addition to any profile. But unless we can offer it for everyone, then it should not be an "official" add-on option on the profile in my mind, since it would leave too many out.

Also if this site is only currently provided with an English interface, having CBC in countries of primary use (English speaking) in beta mode would make sense.

I think the tough thing is if there isn’t a neutral integration system as a part of the platform and is purely UGC uploads of certs etc, those can be fabricated.

I do think participation in the background check should be volunteer but highly advocate for it as something that is regionally available.

If Beltcheckers user metrics indicate mostly wide spread demographics in areas that aren’t supported via background checks that makes sense however if a large majority of users are located within areas that do support it I think it

I’d be willing to pre enroll in beta of it and put my money where my mouth is. I bet others would to do if it is a matter of cost coverage for implementation would be down to contribute.

There's a lot of non-english speaking countries where people still speak English and use this site. It doesn't make a lot of sense to implement a feature that is only available for a small region of the world. Even if we did it in beta, what then when we grow out of that. Disable it again? :)

We have to think global and long term.

We can't decide on features based on how the initial geographical group of users look. That would leave out any potential new regions that come on board later.

The user base after just one month is already very global. There is no easy solution for implementing global criminal background check, I'm sorry.

Not a matter of cost at all, I'd be happy to do it if there was an easy global solution, but there is not, I'm afraid.

If you could link a membership to an NGB that does background checks (USA Wrestling, USA Judo, etc) then folks can at least see you have had a third party background check.

I definitely understand that perspective but the whole point of Beltchecker seems to be to create systems of confirming accountability in BJJ globally since there isn’t one, which I’d argue this is a part of. There’s not a way to currently confirm criminal history globally true, but that is an opportunity to problem solve no? Your site has the potential to problem solve for our community. Perhaps not a phase 1 addon but something to consider.

I think building a global criminal background check system is maybe a bit more than I can find time for :D

But in all seriousness, until a system like that exist one day, anyone with something to hide that are trying to make a profile here will have A LOT of eyes on them (2,096 and counting). If one person calls them out, reveal them in the forum or start downvoting them, the profile will be killed by the community instantly. So we do have a check system in place already, it's just based on community, not on trying to access criminal records of 195 different countries.

Christian - I should clarify. I mean I can already just put my USA Wrestling membership number in my description and folks can check with them to verify my 2019 background check if they want.

Yes that would be wonderful and easy if people started doing that.

I am background checked for other reasons however I'd be happy to do it if asked. I feel it would be important for new potential students to know instructors and even other students had a clean record. Especially as a woman coming into a male dominated sport.

Definitely would be a nice thing to implement if it was possible.

I had one for my immigration to Canada back in 2001 and one recently (last 6 months) in 2019 for my Nexus Card.
Time to start breaking the law! :-P

Perhaps that is a good opportunity to turn into community question:

What is your preferred source/platform of criminal background checks for your region that you’d use/link to your profile here?

Great about USA Wrestling and Judo but if you aren’t a part of those sports what’s a good alternative?

In Denmark, I can log in with national digital ID and order one with the criminal registry in five different languages. It's being sent as PDF in my national digital mailbox in a few days.

But probably not as easy everywhere in the world :D

Not easy like that anywhere that I know of. Denmark is pretty much ahead of everyone in that regard.

This is a splendid idea, although of course difficult to implement. What would be relatively easy is to add a background_check line to the db and allow users to upload documentation that could be verified by an admin or whatever. Maybe add a fancy green checkmark to the users profile if they've bothered to take that extra step, haha.

This is a very interesting idea, but I think Christian's answers and reasoning on this are quite solid. That is, the idea is already kind of implied in the voting/downvoting process. Further, anyone who wants to could simply have a check done on himself and post the certificate.
