I have seen on Instagram today, two people locally to me have been promoted to blue belt by a purple belt. Is this allowed?

I seem to remember it being allowed for remote locations discretionally if there are no black belts around but there are dozens of Black Belts locally to the area.

“Allowed” is a bit of a loaded question. Allowed by who? IBJJF? BeltChecker? My personal opinion is that only black belts should promote. Maybe browns can give out stripes in a fundamentals class…but a beginner can’t be promoting other beginners.
Purple belts make great assistant instructors for beginners classes and kids classes, but on their own they generally don’t have the breath of knowledge and experience required. Some of them will have a couple moves that are gnarly and black belt level, but often still have big holes in their game to patch up that they themselves might not be aware, and therefore may inadvertently be teaching other people to have those same holes in their game. Just my 2 cents.

Doesn't matter if there are black belts in the area, if they don't affiliate with them for whatever reason. In this case, I personally think it's totally fine to promote a blue belt. Purple belt coach/training partner knows their level much, much better than a black belt visiting once a year, as is often the case, anyway.

First of all, where the purple belt coach did he get his belt ? If he run a gym under guidance of a black belt who gave him the permission to graduate people to blue belt, it's fine for me.
If he's alone with a gym at purple rank and give blue belts, it engage his own name but i only see two ways for the future : become an affiliate or becoming a fraud who will graduate himself to continue his students graduation....nowadays i think that we have enough Black belts around to take care of each others

It depends. If it's a purple belt that runs his own school and has been teaching for 2-3 years they probably have a pretty good idea what it should look like to be a blue belt. I would take their word for it over a black belt that's never taught a day in their life and just opened their school last month.

I moved away from my main instructor in Hawaii not long after getting my purple belt. I was running a college club in a small town that had no BJJ school, but I was training at a big BJJ/MMA school in a city 30 minutes down the road. When I had students who were ready for blue belt, I would get my black belt BJJ instructor from down the road to come in, give an all-day seminar, and then test students for blue based on my recommendation after he’d had a chance to observe and roll with the candidates. Both his name and my name would go on the certificates (mine had “assistant coach” next to it). I would never have thought to give a blue belt to anyone on my own. I might have been the everyday coach, but I didn’t have the expertise or authority to award a belt at that time. I wouldn’t want my students to have the integrity of their rank challenged when someone found out they earned their blue belt from a purple belt alone.

This is the correct approach.

There are enough black belts in existence today, and the world is small enough, thanks to information/ communication technology, that a purple belt should, at very least, be able to get the "blessing" from a legit black belt when doing promotions.

I started my gym as an unaffiliated purple belt, and I never personally promoted anyone until after I was eventually promoted to black belt, although i essentially called the shots.

I was fortunate enough to connect with a black belt who would do our promotions every few months or so, with no strings attached. I think if my anti-social ass can pull it off, then anyone can.

Allowed by who? The Jiu Jitsu police? We don't have a governing body who does or doesn't allow such things. This is literally what beltchecker is for. But if they aren't blue belts, then they must be white belts and it's a bad look if other peoples white belts can smash your blue belts so...

Does the person having promoted the purple belt accept him/her promoting blue belts or not?

Standards under my lineage have been two belts under our own (so brown for promoting to blue and the stripes on blue), with black also being able to promote to brown (third degree black to promote to black). But I can't recall ever having down voted any blue belt for being promoted by a purple belt. Might even have up voted a few. A purple with no new affiliation seems like a bit of a dead end for the students though.

If the person having promoted the purple belt made it clear that he/she is not ok with the purple promoting blue belts, I think that should be respected (I would then have another look at my voting).

We actually have in the UK an official governing body for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu which is recognised as such by Sport England

“Allowed” by whose standards? Who are they affiliated to, if any?

What measuring tools did the instructor have to determine ?

What if they registered on here and got validated/certificate ?

Fair point but ultimately they have no real authority. It's very easy to entirely bypass them and i'd wager most people doing BJJ don't have any real interaction with them. If you look at Judo or Wrestling, you see a real governing body. You simply can't fully participate in the sport of Judo in England without the BJA. Likewise, the BWA are everywhere, it's hard to find wrestling events they aren't involved in.

I'm absolutely fine with the UKBJJA or IBJJF not recognising my rank because I don't need them for anything. It would bother me if the BJA didn't recognise my rank because that actually has consequences. As i say, it's a bad look when white belts beat your coloured belts so best to go along with it really...

Super easy answer. there’s absolutely no bJJ centralized authority. You can do whatever the hell you want. Haha

The blue belts can live. The purple belt who promoted them should be tortured and executed by public immolation.

Yes, even blue belts can give stripes to white belts if there is no senior belt. Any upper belt can promote one rank below their own belt color.
However, since they’re not a centralized authority, the Anthony jiu jitsu Federation, which I just started just now, says no

Hail to the AJJF

Lmaoooo ☝️ I agree, it is definitely sus, but officially thats what the IBJJF says. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable promoting anyone until I was a black belt at my own gym. I guess they made that rule for places where black belts are sparce.
They made that rule for another time, fifteen years ago there were a little bit more of purple and Brown belt around but less Black belt, so it was kind of temporary solution to help bjj to expend.
But for me that was only in case you have no Black belt available in your area/country...
For the people who are talking about receive rank from a random Black belt on a seminar one shot... some journey are harder than others, when you have your brazilian Master home all year long it's easier for sure, but for people who have to find their way it's another story.

My concern is how the purple becomes promoted. Or how the blues become purple. I see a number of solutions to this:

- Officially Affiliate with an association where you pay to be affiliated and then pay further fees to have the head instructor come and do 2 seminars and grading each year, whilst also paying travel expenses and their 3 course meal at a restaurant. Don’t forgot pics to pretend you are really close!
- Get to know a local black belt and see if they can pop in and assess the progress and skill level of your students periodically. Consider taking students to some of the black belts open mats where they can be measured against other students.
- Register on BJJ Globetrotters and see if there are any local black belts who can do the same as the point above under.
- Start going to some BJJ Globetrotter events, put yourself out there and roll with as many black belts as possible throughout the camp. Before going, be sure to let them know you wish your skill level to be assessed.
- Put on a belt and take pics with loads of black belts and post in your profile. No one will ever know!

Far too many up voting on claims and together-with-pics alone! Unfortunately, it works all too well.

What criteria do you need to see for a picture to be considered a promotion picture?

I was always under the impression you were allowed to promote up to two ranks below you’re currently ranked. IE a 2 x black belt is required to promote someone to black belt.
