Someone asked for the lineage of the school I attend Invictus, and downvoted all the profiles from there. So here is an attempt to share what I know. Let me start by saying I don't know the exact timeline, or many details, I'm just a student. So this may get a bit messy. I'm also not in any sort of leadership position or in anyway in charge of anything. I've only met Kevin a few times as he operates in a completely different city than Invictus. My instructor is Rick Mitchell.
I'll link pictures to this post as I go (again I'm not the guy to ask about timeline or sequence of events, I don't know). I was going to post them directly but the forum doesn't seem to allow pictures inserted at certain points but just one at the end. If someone knows how to make the hyperlinks work let me know. Otherwise copy and paste.
And yes I'll address what I know about Lasu Rogers.
So I guess I'll start with where we are now. Currently Bankens is affiliated with Royce Gracie and potentially still affiliated with Academy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (specifically Edmilson Alves, see pictures) as he is still listed on their website. https://academyofbrazilia[...]ffiliates/
Royce has changed his website recently but Bankens was listed there in the affiliate section when it existed. https://web.archive.org/w[...]e-network/
And Royce was just at his school a few months ago and is in semi-regularly for the 360 things and seminars. I believe they are actually personal friends as well. https://www.facebook.com/[...]RZD7FsbvFl
https://i.imgur.com/LD6Q7FA.png
https://imgur.com/skSigkd
He started with Royce way back when and there are some pictures attesting to that claim as well. https://i.imgur.com/UL47Sq8.png
He was also an RCJ Machado affiliate for a time (more on this later when we get to Lasu)
I'm not sure if it was Royce who gave him his initial black belt in BJJ, Todd Nathanson or if that was Machado. All of them seem to recognize it as legitimate though.
Royce putting a black belt on him https://i.imgur.com/s6uET9a.png
I do know Carlos Machado gave him his first stripe though. https://i.imgur.com/KZQcKR3.png
Edmilson Alves also striped him https://i.imgur.com/sIuDAgl.png
And also endorsed him as legitimate https://i.imgur.com/DA2Ra6C.png
So as far as I can tell he is accepted by both Royce and Alves, but I don't know if he is still working actively with Alves. Or what exactly played out there.
So for lineage who knows? Gracie, Machado, Alves. Not everyone seems to have as clean a lineage as is being asked for. Next time I speak with him I will ask what he considers to be his.
DISCLAIMER, I don't know if any of the following is accurate information, its just what I can gleam from talking to people in the community.
So for the elephant in the room, Lasu Rogers. Let me just preface that I have never met Lasu, he has never taught a class at Invictus as far as I'm aware and nobody acknowledges him as anything in New Mexico. Everybody is aware he is a liar as far as his rank goes.
Back ten or 15 years ago this was not the case in New Mexico. There weren't many black belts if any here and he has had his claws in a lot of people that eventually became some of the black belts now teaching here in various places.
My instructor Rick said he was a white belt for a time under him and he did have legitimate skill when he wasn't wasted. Said he had a bad drinking problem and was constantly closing or just teaching drunk. I showed him some of the video footage available of Lasu, and he pretty much said, yep looks about right probably drunk.
Its also apparently gotten much worse over the years and he's a bit of a pscyho, so that in combination with his fake (or mostly fake rank depending on who you ask) has caused everybody in the city to distance themselves from him more than they already had. Rick said he would occasionally disappear for awhile and comeback with new stripes on his black belt, claiming his Brazilian cousins gave it to him.
Side note: That kid he promoted to 2nd degree black belt that first put him on the radar on here, apparently has a TBI and for lack of a better way to put it is unable to recognize that Lasu is a fraudster. So all the people making fun of him, just keep in mind this is a disabled person who doesn't know better, and Lasu in the very least is a good conman.
So here is where the big questions for Lasu come in. Is he at all legit? Well during the time Bankens was an RCJ Machado affiliate Lasu was recognized by or managed to greatly fool Carlos Machado. He as far as I can tell gave Bankens stripe number 2 on his BB with blessing from the affiliate. There is a lot of photo evidence to go along with this. https://imgur.com/a/kKA83eA
These are taken from multiple time periods over years so I don't think its a one off seminar type thing and there are a lot more pictures of Bankens(and Lasu) with the big green Machado patch on their back on facebook.
I noticed someone in one of the other threads said they called about Lasu to Machado and Nathanson and they denied ever ranking him. I asked around about this and a couple of people have personally witnessed Lasu being ranked by Machado (not sure about belt or stripe). I've included a picture of Lasu in the previous link at a belt ceremony with Machado so take that for what you will.
Apparently they had a falling out with him because Lasu is a crazy drunk, and liar and now nobody will claim him for anything. However in the pictures I posted look at his gi. He is wearing a black belt and a Machado gi in front of the man himself, so that lends some credence to the claims of these folks. Also I've heard from multiple people that Lasu can actually roll. But who knows a good blue belt can feel like a god to a new white belt so that's anecdotal at best.
As far as I know anything Rodgers has ever said about Fadda affiliation was made up. My guess is he saw Bankens get that affiliation and endorsement from Alves and just decided to claim it for himself as well, even though he and Bankens had fallen out around the same time as the Machado thing. Edmilision Alves posted on his facebook disavowing pure bjj and Lasu at the time. Unfortunately I can't find that post now but I did link earlier the post where Alves endorses Bankens as well as ranks him.
Unfortunately Bankens and a lot of other legitimate martial artists have had their names run through the mud because they got hoodwinked by this guy. Luckily everyone is aware of him now and all the places he tries to infiltrate tell him to kick rocks.
This is already a massive wall of text post so I'll end it there. Hopefully this helps. Next time Bankens pops into town I'll ask him about the initial black belt and his lineage if I get the opportunity to speak with him. OR any of you could call him, his number on his schools facebook and get the actual details from the man himself. He is a very nice guy.

Do you have a date for when Royce put a black belt on him and what color is the belt that it replaced? Difficult to see on the pic. A valid BB promotion obviously will remove an earlier invalid BB promotion, so if Royce puts him on his list of BB:s (https://www.roycegraciejj[...]elt-list-1 with this new date for a BB, that would be excellent!
If that new date would make earlier BB promotions from Bankens questionable, that wouldn't be a problem if Royce agreed to be listed as "senior co-promoter" or similar for those promotions, until Banken is up to date again (if he isn't already). Looking like a resolution could be nearby!
If Bankens still has contact with Machado and/or Alves, they could perhaps agree to adjust a previous promotion of theirs to an initial 0:th BB on the same date as the 1:st or 3:rd stripe, if they feel they know enough of his knowledge and skills (not just time since 0:th degree) to put their name on such a promotion. It's pushing it a bit, but might be the best option to make it legit and still keep most time served years.

No I don't have any dates unfortunately. Like I mentioned in the initial post, I'm not the person for timeline questions. He was already promoted by Alves by the time I even started BJJ in 2019. That would be a question for Bankens himself if he even cares to indulge belt checker. There is a date for the Fadda promotion by Alves in the screenshot. As far as I've read he verifies skill/knowledge before accepting affiliates or offering promotions, so perhaps there is something there if someone cares to find out. If anyone here happens to know Royce I'm sure he could answer these questions as well.

If you want to get that into the weeds you should call Benkins himself, and maybe Royce. As far as I am concerned Alex just laid out a mountain of evidence including pictures. One of the most notable being the picture of Royce belting Benkins. You may feel the need/authority to question Royce, but I certainly don’t.

As I wrote, Royce just has to list him on https://www.roycegraciejj[...]elt-list-1 to acknowledge that he promoted Bankens to 0:th degree BB and that will replace any previous non legit 0:th degree promotion by Lasu!
Royce was who inspired me (and so many others) to start with BJJ in the first place, so can't get much stronger lineage than that!

I've sent an inquiry to Royce and Carlos. I'll share what they say!
Does anyone know what the lineage of Edmilson Alves is (who promoted him not least?)? He seems to have been around forever, but I don't find any good sources when googling. But Fadda lineage is often difficult to find details on.

Now I actually found the info myself on Alves Instagram, along with excellent evidence, although I had already when I asked found enough to conclude he was far into BJJ already when I started, although I didn't find info if there were any instructors between him and Oswaldo Fadda. Black belt card from 1983, when I was only one years old, along with several pics together with Oswaldo. So safe to say he's super legit.
The Alves degree has same problem as the Machado degree though, in that Alves must have thought the initial BB from Lasu was legit until he proved to be a fraud. If Alves took the time to check Banken's knowledge and skills, I'm personally perfectly fine with verifying a BB if Alves expresses that he wishes to retroactively revise that promotion into the legit initial BB promotion which Bankens currently seems to be missing. Although the BB date would be several years earlier if Carlos Machado agreed on a similar arrangement. Or perhaps if Bankens prefer a much later date but from Royce (perhaps that is what has happened now?).
So the mess that Lasu left Bankens with can be redeemed and I hope the rest of the BJJ community would be perfectly fine with that as well, it that's what Bankens decided on.

Here, he definitively has a black belt with blur rank bar (ie Royce Gracie black belt) and standing next to Royce.
His homepage says "Bankens started studying Gracie Jiu-jitsu at age 25 under the legendary Royce Gracie.
27 years in the art he is now a Certified Black Belt under Master Gracie." (http://bankensmma.com/)
No info on to what extent and for how long he trained for Royce at age 25 (1997?) and when and why he associated with Lasu instead, then Carlos Machado, then Edmilson Alves, before returning to Royce.

Ok. The blue bar confused me. In the photo I was talking about a washed-off stripe bar looks a bit like purple. That's why I was thinking it was a promotion to brown.

For him, but not for his students. The belt looks very new on this pic, from late September 2022, so 2:nd degree BB no earlier than 2028. Messes unfortunately keep messing along the lineage, so the students are affected as well. Unless Royce, Edmilson or Carlos step in and agree to be official senior co-promotors for the students already promoted to BB by Bankens.

Don't know the extent of how long he trained with Royce himself. I believe his first instructor was Pat "Hawk" Hardy, who is the first name on Royce's black belt list you posted earlier in the thread.
Again I could be completely off base with any of this. Pat Hardy operates out of Texas, and I'm guessing that's who got him to brown belt. He moved to New Mexico at some point, which I assume would be the initial split between him and Royce's school. Though I'll not speculate further as I know nothing with regards to that. Then he also moved to (edit: Los Alamos not Alamogordo) some years later and opened his own academy, which is the one that exists now.

Back then, when all that crazy „Lasu“ shit began to kick off here, out of interest I contacted Mr. Kevin Bankens and Mestre Edmilson Alves, too (I even have some of the messages still on my phone/ messanger). Both were very nice and back then Mr. Bankens already wrote he didn’t wanted to get involved in that „Lasu“ case, that he was training with him just a short time and switched affiliations back then.
It’s not uncommon people switch affiliations and teachers for various reasons
1. undoubtedly Mestre Edmilson Alves is as legit as fuck and old school Fadda coral belt
2. there were no doubts, Mr Bankens was affiliated with, recognized by and promoted/ striped in 2018 to 3rd degree Blackbelt by Mestre Alves (the pic is still on Facebook) at the academy of Blackbelt Mr Todd Nathanson. Bankens is in the game and trains and teaches Jiu Jitsu for more than 2 decades
3. Mr Bankens got his first degree Blackbelt from Carlos Machado himself some years before he switched to Mestre Alves (picture, etc. in the original „Lasu“ thread)
4. Mr Bankens is a legit BJJ Blackbelt, looks he is now affiliated with Royce Gracie, who he knows for a very long time (enough picture evidence)and got promoted by him and he is certified to teach Royce‘s RG 360 curriculum (many more pictures and statements on the Website of Mr. Bankens and on Facebook: Kevin Conan Bankens)
5. the „Lasu“ guy was never affiliated with Mestre Edilson Alves and lied about it; Mestre Alves wrote Lasu was never affiliated with him (all in the original Lasu thread plus I have the original messages of Mestre Alves from back then when I am asked him still in my messenger)….

If Royce verifies him through his list of BB:s, he's no doubt a legit BB 0:th degree, which is also the degree he's been displaying on his rank bar since (see his social media). Even with missing records of the blue to brown belt promoting instructors, we know from Machado and Alves that he's got much more than the 4½ years in BJJ before his promotion from Royce.
There was a similar case some time ago with a BB who originally was promoted to BB by a guy who claimed to be a Carlson Gracie BB, but when he later wanted to register with IBJJF, he was re(?)promoted to BB 0:th degree by a no doubt legit BB. So he had two different BB timelines, which resulted in two different degrees. In the end, he himself realized that only the second one was valid. Very good for him though that he got the more legit "re-promotion" only three years later, so he only "lost" three years in BB degrees and I think that made the degrees of all his students in the clear as well. https://www.beltchecker.c[...]amp;page=5
I have some memory also of someone getting time served degrees on a non legit BB by some well known name who didn't really check their credentials or skills before giving stripes. Does someone remember the details?`
As Bankens himself wears the 0 degree belt now, although he "lost" more years of BB degrees than in the case I linked to, that is an effective way of cleaning things upp, if Machado or Alves don't retroactively adjust one of their stripings to a 0:th degree BB promotion.
Rick Mitchell and others of Bankens promoted students, who have promoted students of their own (before Bankens Royce belt), aren't directly helped by that unfortunately. So for you who are concerned, I would recommend that you together with Bankens get the support and official senior co-promotion of one of his own instructors to make the degrees formally valid according to high standards.
