Since Judochecker is dead, I am starting this thread as a place where judoka can post our random Judo rambling that nobody else cares about. 😂

German Nationals round about 30 years ago (before blue gi became obligatory for one of the fighters) and long before it was forbidden to grab the legs. Good old times…

Good idea! I'm glad I decided to pad my bjj competition record with my judo matches (I was just doing bjj anyway) or else I would have lost track of my judo comp record, as judochecker was the only place I kept track of this stuff.
Now I just have to figure out when I earned my belts, and when I did my katas and all that...

Love it, RIP to judo checker. On the plus side, after 3+ years of judo on and off, I got promoted to yellow belt lol. Kind of strange to be honest because it’s from an instructor on the base judo club in Japan. So they are using the American grading system, but out in town in Japan they only have white and black belts here. So it’s a bit funny I think, I’m not used to seeing an adult wear a yellow belt. I think I’ll continue to wear a white belt at local Japan dojos lol.

I tore my acl by just clicking on this thread.
So, was having this debate with another friend. Who has more injuries, Judo or Wrestling?

I've seen more injuries in wrestling but Judo has had it's fair share as well. In terms of danger, I think I'd say Judo only because as defense is mounted the impact always seems to be worse and worse.
To me, I think if you have a relaxed mindset Judo can be fun and relaxing if you aren't going like a "bat outta hell", but that's just me.

I was excited that I finally had my Judo profile voted on. Looks like the site is truly dead.
Any of you guys do a curriculum specifically for Judo for BJJ?
I teach Judo twice a week and have a small growing program. At first it was just a supplemental class to get people some standup time with throws I find good for BJJ. I have had some students request for me to promote them in Judo eventually, but I'm not sure how to do it. My Judo coach kind of retired and moved away.

I’ve been teaching a “Judo For BJJ” class for about 5 years now.

Well, I teached Judo for many years.
First in an old style way along the Gokyo and working with the promotion rules of the german DJB, affiliated to the IJF.
After my sussesful escape from affiliations I used the BJJ approach of giving belts when I am sure a student reached a level with a special focus on abilities in randori.🤷♂️
None of my students was ever questioned if his or her rank is legit after a randori anywhere.😉

I just got promoted to Shodan last year. While I feel good about my Judo for a 46 year old, I'm not sure how I'm going to progress myself and how I would eventually promote someone else to black belt. I think I may have to try to affiliate with someone else but I haven't found a good solution for that, that doesn't require hours of travel and fees just to be a part of an organization.
I was going through a process of trying to put skills and throws into a belt level curriculum but I also like the BJJ way of when I think someone is ready.

I assume America is similar to Canada in that you likely have an IJF and Kodokan recognized body that you can affiliate with, get your points, learn your kata, and then apply to test for nidan, sandan, etc.
I’ve always had consistent Judo coaches, but technically speaking, my provincial grading board has always conducted my dan grade tests (as they are recognized by Judo Canada).

Yes, our major organizations are USJA, USJF, and USA Judo. There are good sides and bad sides with each one, but the only universally-recognised organization is USA Judo.
The difference between these organizations and most bjj affiliations, is that these ones are non-profits, so there's more of a benefit to joining their program, IMHO. I don't know why you wouldn't.

Any US-based judoka out there pay any attention to the new ranking criteria for USJA?
As it applies to us BJJ practitioners:
"Recognizing that practitioners of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), an art derived directly from Judo, train in techniques substantially similar to the techniques of Judo and acquire significant Judo skill through their training, the Board of Directors unanimously voted to allow head coaches to waive the time in grade and minimum number of classes to test for the following ranks issued by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation:
a. BJJ Purple Belt up to Judo Yonkyu.
b. BJJ Brown Belt up to Judo Sankyu.
c. BJJ Black Belt up to Judo Nikyu.
Waivers are at the discretion of the head coach and practitioners must still pass the required vocabulary, general knowledge and technique portions of the USJA senior kyu promotion system..."
What do y'all think about that?

Yeah, I seen that posted elsewhere.
Seems like a sensible change. It's a bit silly to treat a BJJ practitioner (who potentially has been doing some judo for years ) the same as a guy who is walking in for the first time.
But I also think it makes little difference practical difference. A purple belt bypasses 5 months in rank, a brown, 10 months. It's better than nothing, but it's hardly a game changer. Will probably lose that time picking up the vocabulary

I notice you're from Australia. Are you saying it only takes 10 months to get to sankyu in judo there?!
Personally, I think it's interesting they chose the ibjjf as the organization to qualify the jump in rank. Should have been beltchecker lol.
I was jumped up to yonkyu as a bjj brown belt, and ex-college wrestler, but this is only after months of judo training, demonstrated knowledge of the throws/vocabulary, and very good tournament outcomes.
I think this was reasonable. Still took me ~5yrs to get to shodan.

I'm not formally ranked in Judo. So not sure what the times are here. I believe the Kyu grades are slightly different here though.
I was referring to USJA times. From here. https://www.usja.net/staf[...]t/download
Although I was reading it as the time you have to spend at each rack. Not the time before that rank.
According to that the min would be 2+3+4+5 = 14 Months (or +3months with zero comp points).

Based on what I've seen of people who have come into my dojo as brown and even black belts, the quality of judo training is woefully poor compared to what it was when I was coming up the ranks. It seems to be mostly competition oriented, and yet, the newcomers do terribly against my students in randori, and even those with BJJ training fare poorly when it comes to ne waza. One of my yellow belts went off to school at the Citadel (military academy) in South Carolina, and when he came back to visit, he said that they promoted him two ranks to green belt after just two classes, so perhaps my standards are rather high.

I can't tell where those exact numbers are on the form, but looks like 4-15 months to get to yonkyu is their absolute minimum, and that seems like a crazy short period of time to me. You kinda gotta be a real baller to make that happen, but I'm sure there are some dojos out there that rank like that.
