Hey everyone, let's talk people outside your BJJ sphere and the inevitable encounter with those who think it's just "pajama wrestling" or "hugging other guys." Been there, done that, right? As a purple belt with years on the mat, it's wild how some folks dismiss it without even giving it a shot. Ever invited one of these doubters to class and shown them what's up? How did you get them there. Did there opinion change? Share your experiences!

Just to clarify because in another forum I was misunderstood. I’m not looking to make anyone feel in adequate when first introducing them to BJJ. I just feel there with some people is a misconception that they are immune to BJJ. At least that’s the comments I’ve received from people who are not willing to try it. I wanna know has anyone had an experience changing someone’s thoughts after getting them to experience a class.

Doubters or those who have misconceptions about any martial arts are usually the individuals that need it the most. They are usually missing or dealing with something like: poor relationship with sports as a child, physical injuries they think exclude them from participation, uncomfortable confronting their own sexuality, inflated egos, etc. People are flawed.

Therefore, they dismiss or reject Jiu Jitsu based on their own personal issues. It has nothing to do with reality or that there is actually something wrong with a particular sport.

Anytime I have seen the type of change you are asking about occur is when people have learned by example that through consistent effort and practice anything can be achieved. Seems preachy but this is the answer you are look for.

A different type of BJJ doubter learns the hard way. King Webb is a 3rd degree BJJ black belt and a friend who I've trained with. He runs a school in Seguin, TX. https://www.youtube.com/w[...]mnpzg1429k Here's what King wrote about the match: "So this guy drops in and watches my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class and he tells me that the art does not work and that his TKD, Boxing, Akido, shootfighting blend can defeat Jiu-Jitsu/MMA in a REAL Streetfight. It irritated me to say the least but I blew him off and he left the school. He then proceeded to call my wife and I challenging me to a match numerous times for about 6 weeks. I declined, but then he started telling people in town I was afraid of him and even went and challenged my 54 year old Thai Boxing instructor. The next time he called I accepted his challenge and this is a video of the 2 matches."

In all honesty, who cares? It's a hobby, not a religion. We don't need to spread the gospel. We just need to enjoy our adult karate and relax. We rolling around with sweaty people. This isn't something important like medicine or something and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Who cares!? You don't need their validation to have feelings of fulfillment and self confidence from training Jiu-Jitsu. It's up to you how much power their opinions have over you.

Honestly it's like anything else why bother.

Let them think whatever the old saying you can't fix stupid applies.. You can choke it out and it still wakes up stupid..

Let people wallow in their ignorance

Yes I have had that converstation at a new years party. I had introduced a friend to it whos a power lifter and he was blown away by how helpless he was. We had another old friend turn up and and new starter friend attempt to suggest \ say you just have no idea how powerfull bjj was. We got the red mist speach and I told my new starter friend, that it would not be possible to use logic to pursuade the illogical and we all moved on and had another beer.

Sort joke answer "Choke him the fk out." then ask if it works. :P
