I don't think there has been a specific tattoo thread yet, so time to start one! I love pretty much everything about tattoos (maybe not so much the pain, but even that is kinda cool in a 'rite of passage' way ;) ): both my feet are heavily covered, slowly working my way up from there. I'm especially proud of the one on the bottom of my left foot. Alex Neufang tattooed that on my sole by the side of the mats at Heidelcamp 2019, after we rolled, so that's got a lot of sentimental value bound up in it. Represents BJJ Globetrotters Camps to me and the awesome experiences I've had at them. :D

In BJJ, it seems especially common to be tattooed. I've noticed a very high percentage of people I train with have tattoos: quite often, especially in a small class, every single person on the mat will have some kind of ink. Possibly that's partly down to demographics. Though all ages train BJJ, the majority is probably 20s and 30s, of which a high percentage are tattooed, especially in the UK.

So, feel free to chat about your tattoos, put up pics, or just general tattoo stuff. I'm always keen to learn more about the history, there are loads of awesome documentaries. For example, for any fellow tattoo geeks here:

It's so hard to find a good tattoo artist these days. All the good ones are super busy -artists- who want to do only their own artsy projects and don't want to pick up half-completed works by someone else...

Just a matter of persevering, I think. Took me three years to get an appointment at Nidhogg in Bergen, I am super excited to finally go in June this year! They do awesome work. <3

Got some stick and poke style ones and the only problem is being anxious to get back on the mats too soon afterwards! Don't want to get an infection. :P

Yeah, taking enough time off is important. Everybody seems to have their own personal guidelines, but I always avoid sparring for two weeks, plus any kind of drilling that would involve the tattooed area. I still teach though. Worked for me so far, 8 tattoos down the line (well, 7, one of them I got before I started BJJ).

I haven't tried stick and poke yet, would be interesting to give it a go. Main problem is they take so much longer, but then if it was small, that wouldn't be a big problem. One of my close friends bought herself a stick and poke set, so I'd be tempted to just let her do something random (as long as it was small ;D).

I nowadays usually get back on the mats on 3rd or 4th day after a tattoo. I use spray plaster for care. (had to take off longer with other care methods)

I think it is trickier if you're the one running a gym: if I wasn't a gym owner and instructor, I would stay off the mats completely for those two weeks. As it is, I still need to teach, so I just try to avoid any major physical contact on the tattooed area, which seems to have worked so far.

You've got a big geometric piece in progress, IIRC? Can't remember exactly, but think you showed it to me at camp at some point. :D

Thought I'd bump this, in case any new tattoo enthusiasts have joined since 3 weeks ago. ;)

Excited about planning yet more tattoos: got that one in June during my Norway trip (assuming corona virus doesn't fuck things up somehow), then planning to get another at the Leuven Footlock Camp in July, plus hopefully another in Hamburg in October. Yay! :D

Booking in another tattoo for when we come out of lockdown, something to look forward to. I'm probably not going to be able to go to Norway for the tattoo I did have booked in June, which makes me sad (spent a few years getting that set up, but meh, can just move it all to next year I guess), so I decided to move up the schedule for the next big tattoo I had planned, as that one would be in the UK.

I've got a few, waiting till achieve black belt to get a bjj related one.
it's such a difficult concept to translate into an image.
Thinking I'll just go for "jiu jitsu" or "arte suave" in script when it's time

Was there a specific artist you were going to in Norway?
Yes, Annlaug and Jannicke at Nidhogg. Location is important to me with tattoos as well, so I'd only want to get that particular one in Bergen, at their studio. :)

Some very American tattoos! ;)

Are you generally a fan of classic traditional stuff? I'm not generally a trad tattoo person, but when I finally make it back to the US, I'd like to get a trad style snake. The USA has been super important to my BJJ development (especially my friend John Palmer in Texas, who is the guy who taught me the control point framework I've used ever since, during one of my training trips to Austin).

I have many more but this one is the one for which I suffered the most xD
Awesome! Let's see the rest. :D

That back piece is an interesting combination of Greek mythology with Japanese style, having a samurai do the deed instead of Perseus. I also see the owl from the Harryhausen 'Jason and the Argonauts' 1963 film, plus the medusa head (which if you're continuing the Harryhausen connection would be 'Clash of the Titans' from 1981, unless you just happen to like that particular myth?).

Given my club is called Artemis BJJ, I love mythology. <3

Yes! Because reasons, I asked my tattooist about that myth done japanese style and she delivered. The owl is also from those movies, a dear childhood memory.

Which reminds me, I haven't posted all of mine yet. Here's part of the one on my left arm:

I’ve only got the one, so far.
I lost my dad last year, and got this as a tribute to him.
Phra Phikanet / Ganesha - the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts & sciences and the deva of intellect & wisdom.

My dad loved Thailand and their culture, so I wanted something that represented his love of that, as well as my love of him.

latest one is a bjj themed
Ha ha ha, that's awesome! Though must confuse non-BJJ people: "So why do you love washing machines so much, I don't get it. Are you an engineer or something?" ;)

I'll add another of mine (this was fresh, faded a bit since then). This is sort of BJJ related, based off the cover of one of my fave fantasy novels, War of the Twins (part of the Dragonlance Legends trilogy). Added butterfly wings and changed her pose. That means she's sort of a military guard, on my instep, with butterfly wings. So, butterfly guard, hooray! #DodgyVIsualPuns :D

Have a few tattoos, a couple Jiu-Jitsu related being our club logo and motto.
I'm generally wary of tattooing club logos (as logos change, as do people's affiliations), but the Origin BJJ one is a cool design. Was that something Marc came up with, or did he bring in a designer? :)

I had to get the Origin tattoo to cover up his RED SHIELD 4 LIFE tattoo.

Yeah I’m wary of that sort of thing to so I purposely left out the wording.
I’m pretty sure he designed it himself with the Bonsai which represents the tree of life and the Enso.
