Hi everyone,
I'm curious about your experiences with heart monitors during training. Do you prefer chest straps or armbands? How do they compare in terms of comfort and accuracy? Also, is anyone integrating their devices with Apple Health?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I used an arm strap with a WHOOP device that was integrated in Apple Health app. It worked great. I actually stopped using it because it worked so well that I was over training trying to reach daily goals for calorie burn and activity.

Does the whoop require a subscription as well??

In our gym couple of people are using chest straps. As an observer, I can say that higher the belt, the better the sensor stays on. On chest-to-chest contact this piece of plastic hurts the opponent (such as myself) similar to the groin cup when someone grinding my ribs or spine with it.

If you buy the strap and sensor from some of the Apple Health compatible producers (such as Polar for example) then you should be good.

Yes, you purchase the subscription and the device is “free.” It was really good for identifying stress and recovery, and sleep patterns. I really liked it for getting an idea of what areas needed to be addressed.

I mentioned this in a different thread, but the WHOOP works almost as accurate as my medical prescribed device. I however had better results using the compression underwear from WHOOP that has a place in the waistband to hold the device..

I have used almost every device that one can use for this as I have a medical condition that effects the heart. Numerous prescribed monitors, some with leads, some more like the WHOOP or apple watch type sensor. The hardest part was keeping them attached for the whole training. Tape, compression gear, pre-wrap, etc. I tried it all. In the end the WHOOP was the best daily use because of how I could wear it. They have the arm sleeve, compression shorts and Shirts and more. I found that the compression gear worked well. It kept reading the whole training session, didn’t interfere with the GI or no GI as it holds the device in the waistband on the back. The only down fall was the paid subscription, but if you need something it might be worth it for you. I used it for about two years and got a good baseline for me and was able to share with my cardiologist for evaluation.

I use a polar arm strap now I find it great. Previously iv used whoop but because of the subscription I changed to a garmin. The garmin was very good,I had the watch but used the chest strap when rolling.. The strap only lasted me 6 months or so before it would break, possibly because I use pressure passing mostly bodylock..so iv changed to the polar arm band. I find it great,it connects to my garmin watch too..

I've used just a cheap Amazon HR chest strap, paired with my Garmin watch which sits at the edge of the mats. The strap stays in place for the most part, and no one ever really notices I'm wearing it. I do get dropouts when it shifts slightly, but there's enough data there to see trends.

That's super helpful - thank you!

I've always wanted to try one, I really enjoy tracking misc data with my apple watch, but I've always been concerned about it digging in to me while rolling.

I use a WHOOP device as well, and typically wear it in the arm sleeve. It provides a plethora of useful data and tracks over time as well. Several other athletes at our gym have since purchased it and use it often.

I bought the Polar H9 recently. Got a really good deal on it and have been using it daily when I train, but never on the mats. I've had students use them without any issues but I fidget with it enough doing weights and such as it is.

With polar H9 and H10 chest raps you can record a session. Just turn it on and don’t need a watch near by.

What kind of information are you looking for from the data?
Heard rate will be accurate, but interpretation might not be. There might be mental stress that affects the heard rate and its not the same as just running? (If you are using it to check cardio.)

So I want it to see the highs and recovery points in my typical Gi class. Ended up purchasing the polar verity arm band. Used it for the first time and was able to see the peaks an valley’s of my session cardio wise. Happy so far wanna take to open mat on Sunday and get a full hour and a half of 5 minute rolls and see how that looks comparatively. I also can now more accurately track in work out active calories burned.

I don’t think that calorie burn is accurate in any heart rate monitor. For me its off more than 40%.
I think that scale is better for monitoring calories :-)

Heart rate could be useful for aerobic/cardio development. I am not sure how well one can control intensity during class/rolling so it might be just a tool for monitoring what did happen.

Still fun to notice how hard one rolls:-)
