I have no idea how we go from competing grappling shows to death threats. What was Seth thinking talk about a horrible look for the sport.
I honestly don't believe what Jones is doing is sustainable because at some point there needs to be an ROI. ADCC should have just wished them well watched and waited for a crash and burn. Instead we got a playbook on how not to deal with a competitor.
I have lost a lot of respect for ADCC due to this

Wow that is a mess.
I had to look it up online after you posted.
Maybe ADCC needs to reconsider who they have steering the ship.

Very poorly handled on ADCCs part. But competition leads to improvement. I feel like the people who are mad at CJI are confused about how jiu jitsu works as well.

I had to go google it as well. I don't follow ADCC or any other promotion so I guess I'm out of touch. I recognize Seth Daniels' name from F2W, but didn't realize he was involved with ADCC. I'm a little surprised that people don't know that ADCC loses money every year. That isn't difficult math to do. It's going to be hard to make money when 99% of the population doesn't care about your sport and wouldn't watch it for free. Just ask the WNBA that has been subsidized by the NBA to the tune of millions of dollars every year. Meanwhile, the WNBA (just like grapplers) are crying about their pay when they aren't generating any revenue. Caitlyn Clark may turn that around as she has single handedly tripled viewership of WNBA games. Whether or not that is sustainable once the new wears off remains to be seen. But anyway... Without private investment, and I use the term investment very loosely here because it implies an expected return, we wouldn't have high shows like ADCC or CJI. It's going to take grappling fans with deep pockets that just want to see who the best is at any cost, just like we've seen for years.

Adcc is like an acient artefact. They have a really good name but are old school in their aproach. Anybody is allowed to compete with them of course. And like mentioned above at least adcc has started with show money and equal pay for the women.
Whether or not its a sustainable initiative im looking forward to a great weekend full of exciting matches.
About the death threats, its a sign of the time. If mother Teresa would be alive today she would receive them as well im sure.

This is unfortunately just the most recent Seth related incident. If you look up his history, its a doozy.

I have dealt with Seth and always got along with him but have watched him react to anything critical by lashing out.
there really isn't going to be big money for the athletes as it is not a spectator friendly sport. Anyone who has offered good prize money either went out of business or lowered the purses.
The ADCC and IBJJF hold their position based on the fact that the better athletes chose both but it's not like the athletes are really getting anything in return

I can't speak for the ADCC as I don't know how they handle athlete travel, but to a large extent IBJJF has paper champions because of this. It can cost several thousand dollars to travel to IBJJF Worlds and a lot of people either can't afford to do it or can afford it, but it isn't worth it to them. That means a huge pool of deserving competitors don't even show up.

I don't think this is as good an argument as most people think it is. First of all, Mo Jassim himself has said that this ADCC IS going to turn a profit so it just doesn't apply this year. Second of all, most fight promotions aren't profitable and still manage to pay more than the ADCC. Thirdly, being "not profitable" doesn't mean they're not making money and the statement itself should be taken with a HUGE grain of salt. To put this in perspective, Amazon is also technically not profitable either. This isn't because there's no money, it's because they are actively trying to use the system to make it appear as if they're not. There are tons of tax loopholes and financial incentives to avoid showing a profit (like for example getting away with paying your athletes next to nothing 🤔🤔🤔🤔) and that's completely ignoring the Sport Washing aspect of such events. Fourthly, Mo Jassim has already raised the prize money, pretty much on a whim. And show money came about a week later. If he was able to raise it that easy, that speaks to money not really being an issue.
And finally, let's be VERY honest. Raising the prize money at ADCC would not be that big an increase. Raising first place from 10k to 20k would only increase the budget by 50K. That's most considerably less than they paid for Bruce Buffer.

I’ve been following, and I known there’s a lot of negativity, but I think Craig Jones is the funniest person to bring balance in such a serious sector of our sport. I get that ADCC has done a lot for the sport, and I personally don’t want to snub that either, but it’s all just really really funny and I like to laugh so….

Craig isn't doing it to achieve and ROI or to be sustainable. It's to make a point. The ADCC is worthless without the athletes. They had lost sight of that, and this has been a reminder.

The last world championships didn't lose money. Which means that ADCC ran at a loss since 2019. I agree that the math is easy.

They could have increased the prizes to $100k and it wouldn't have equal the money they are paying for the venue - when the venue last time was perfectly fine

I personally think there's plenty of things they could have left out which could have saved money AND improved the show as a whole. This biggest that leaps to mind was the whole section of Lenne Hardt announcing the athletes one after the other for about an hour. I literally know NO ONE who didn't hate that. Just cutting that out could most likely save them about 100k. And let's be honest, no one gives a crap about Bruce Buffer announcing the even either. He most likely wasn't cheap either. God only knows what other waste could be cut if they looked, but they'd rather spend money on that than the athletes. When you look at it from that perspective, that it literally took a mass exodus of the top names to make them move on this topic is embarrassing.

Bruce Buffer's fee is $100k
