Today the history of Jiu-Jitsu that we know seems to be questioned by many practitioners. In this interview with Helio Gracie, I think many of you will be able to find the answers to them questions. https://www.youtube.com/w[...]AA_TxnBecQ
Assuming he is being honest. And with the Gracies, that's a big ask.

I don't see why he would lie. Everything he said is verifiable and he didn't particularly boast

According to who? The Gracie family? I ask with all due respect of course. Not trying to be a jerk. Just not a fan

He's basically saying that he single handedly created BJJ and that only his sons really know BJJ and would only lose a real fight out of a rare occasion of bad luck. If that's not particularly boasting, what is?

This is not the actual history. It is what we refer to as the "Gracie Version" of the story. Read BJJHistory.org for a more complete view.

You really don't see why they would lie? I find that hard to believe.

Claiming he didn't boast is a stretch. Kool aid runs deep.

In a way, boasting would only apply to self-praise for that which you have done. When it devolves into the realms of fabrication, is it still boosting, or just lying?

What the Gracies accomplished is amazing they were instrumental in creating MMA and changing the landscape of martial arts..

That said Helio's version of BJJ history is a COMPLETE FABRICATION

Exactly.
It is undeniable that they were builders, but they also built a revised history around the art they practiced.

Here's a video of Tsunitane Oda showing kosen judo techniques. There are leg drags, long step passes, stack passes, knee cuts, back takes including body triangles. Tons of things which modern practitioners do. Oda was born in 1892.

Helio, claiming in pretty much the first few sentences in your posted video that he invented bjj, is boastful garbage.

BJJ, in general, has maintained and grown a great deal of skills that Judo started to ignore due to sportification.

Helio could have taken some vicarious credit, but modern BJJ as we are practicing owes more to Carlson, Carlos Jr, IBJJF, and the contemporary no-gi scene.

In the video I posted, you see leg drag passes, long steps ... there's so much modern bjj in there. Hell I was almost expecting a berimbolo. I'm going to edit my post above so people don't think it's another old school kosen video ... there's a lot of "modern" jiu jitsu in there.

This is the only rational view.
Not parroting the Gracie propaganda does not undermine or ignore the contribution of the Gracies.

The "only Helio and his sons" story is, in reality, the disrespectful one.

It blows my mind that people actually believe Helio's story. Whoever said "The Kool Aid runs deep" is spot on. Helio insults and disrespects his own family and several others who were instrumental in the spreading of BJJ with his egotistical fabrication of history. Even though I'm clearly not a fan - I am nonetheless thankful for what the Gracie family has done in part, because it is undeniable that they were essential in the fast growth of the art. However, it only takes a little research and reading to learn just how ridiculous the tale depicted in the above video really is.
