So I post some of my martial arts work to my social media just to show what my real life looks like - and a judo practitioner came out of the woodwork and said my work looks good but my game is getting ruined by ā€œsmiling too muchā€ and ā€œhaving too much funā€ during drilling.

I… erm.. what? šŸ˜‚ Does anyone else find this strange? I’m not having a good time all the time on the mats (especially after getting hit with an osoto gari throw with good air or doing something dumb and getting caught in a choke with a white belt..) but that just seems silly to me.

If you can laugh and smile during training no matter how hard it gets, you are doing it right.

Don't listen to people. Especially those who want misery at every turn.

Do whatever makes you keep coming back to the mat.

That’s my thought too! What’s the point if you’re not having a good time? (Most of the time at least 🤣)

We laugh and joke around almost too much at our school. Turns into an issue when you visit other schools that have stricter vibes. One of our students (black belt) was made to do push ups at a seminar cause he was standing with his hands on his hips while observing the instruction. Seminar instructor had warned us all prior but he still fucked up. I still make fun of him for that lol ... poor guy was so embarrassed.

That's a fair point, at another gym it's good to be respectful and not go too silly if they're more serious/strict. I think the point the person was trying to make to me was almost that if I'm having too much fun, I'm not respecting how serious it can be/what injuries can occur. I'm a small grappler so I'm usually trying to keep it light for myself so I don't panic thinking too much about all the ways I CAN get hurt, ha!

The whole reason for doing this is fun. The whole martial, self defense aspect gets old after a couple of years. You want to last in this game, you better be enjoying it.

Funny you should say that - this particular judoka quit martial arts a few years ago :)

A huge reason I train is to have fun. When I coach, i try hard to make people smile, have fun, and come back. I cannot fathom training BJJ without a lil fun on the matts!

One of the main principles of our school is this: ā€œTraining should be safe and fun.ā€ This is not just for my gym, but our whole organization. We take our training seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. If training is painful and demoralizing, people will quit. You can still get a good workout while having a good time. It also makes it much easier to try new things in sparring when you’re not worrying about getting tapped. Why have a hobby if it’s not fun?

So just to be clear...someone paid to attend a seminar, and the instructor's ego required everyone be barred from standing in a neutral position, therefore he punished this adult like a basic trainee? That's laughable

I feel like not being able to have a lightheartedness about it is also a sign of an ego or a dissatisfaction on some level, and taking yourself too seriously is just too much pressure to sustain. I can’t take myself that seriously when I’m training, as if I have some persona to defend, ya know? I’m grateful I have a body that can support me in these arts, I have a gym with people who all support each other to grow and improve, my coach is thorough and believes we can all do well, I get to see you all here online achieving great things - what about any of that wouldn’t cause me to be smiling and feeling great?

Again - not each training session is an on top of the world moment, but my overall satisfaction with BJJ is gratefulness and fulfillment - in fact, I’m having an even better time not trying to be ā€œsome tough girlā€ anymore like when I was on the precipice of my blue belt and I try to look on the bright side and laugh it off even when I have an abysmal training day. I love cracking a joke that I’m gonna go kick someone’s ass after I take a hit of my inhaler, which makes me look totally nerdy and not tough. šŸ˜‚

I can't teach a class without joking, having fun in the gym make you feel good about the place and gives you the will to come back.
Smiling and being gentle cost nothing but open every doors.

So YES, keep smiling as much as you need

For someone that cannot read the room (or mat), it is way more scary when someone is light-heartedly smiling or laughing as they choke you out or are trying to dislocate one of your limbs. It implies that it's easy for you to wreak havoc. Maybe the judoka was getting uncomfy with your apparently enthusiastic appetite for destruction.

It’s like that reel in which a guy explained that he hates it when girls giggle in class. Just nonsense to me.

Go do your training with a stoic face on, talk to no one and be the outsider of the gym because everyone has fun and is a silly goose and they stopped trying to involve you.

I have a serious job and when I go to jiu jitsu I want it to lighten up my day and be around friends. I can still train competitive and take my training serious but enjoying jiu jitsu is the top priority.

Long story short the guy probably didn’t learn how to let out his silly self and is trying to always be the toughest.

Yep same! And I think that camaraderie is important (not that you have be besties with everyone) but you can't improve by yourself. I train worse when I'm trying to do a half rate impression of Gordon Ryan hahaha.

Yup that sounds like the kind of thing a judoka would say. Wait until they start wanting to teach you their newaza

I would never do pushups as a punishment as an adult. Shouldn't treat adults like kids.

If it was part of some stupid warmup I would do it, I just wouldn't like it. But as a punishment for just standing normal. Hell no.

The main thing I want from any team/seminar etc photos is smiling. Hence why I try encourage everybody to make as stupid a pose as possible. That normally works. :D

I sometimes laugh when training with my kids, especially if they hit a move on me.
I can't help remembering them as cute little poop machines.
When my older one wants me to stop laughing, he kicks my legs.
