Please have a look at https://www.beltchecker.c[...]hp?id=5684 (Scarecrow / Jimmy Santiago III), claiming to have been promoted to BB by Samer Marji in 2015, but evidence of Samer being a BB 2:nd degree in 2015 is not holding up. Now I've gotten a revenge vote instead of any attempt to clear up the situation, which really is not looking good and I personally think that destroys the whole purpose of Beltchecker.

Samer Marji claims on his Beltcheckers profile (https://www.beltchecker.c[...]hp?id=8222) to have won gold as a brown belt in the 2020 pan ams, which doesn't match IBJJF:s official results (https://www.ibjjfdb.com/C[...]licResults).

First hit on Google when searching for Samer Marji black belt says Samer is a Chuck Anzalone BB (see https://www.davidbranchji[...]nstructors and search for Samer). Yup, THAT Chuck Anzalone, dishonorably discharged and convicted for attempted espionage for Russia as well as other controversies such as banning police officers from training at his academy.

Chuck's own homepage claims he was promoted to BB by De La Riva in 2008 (https://buffalobjj.wixsit[...]ness/about), with a 1:st degree in 2011 (https://www.graciemag.com[...]st-degree/). Which equals a 2:nd degree in 2014, at which time he could have then promoted Samer to a no degree BB. With a 2:nd degree for Samer in 2020 (five years after Jimmy claims Samer promoted him to BB).

Of course, a senior black belt such as Chuck could have been the actual promoting instructor, but none other than Samer is claimed, so that is what I have to base my vote on.

To be fair, the profile you sited has not been verified.

The alleged profile lists two "Pan Am" gold medals, having taken place in New Jersey (IBJJF Pans take place in Florida) and they are not listed as Brown Belt medals.

Did I miss something somewhere?

Also, afaik, Russian spies who don't like cops can also be bjj black belts.

First and foremost you don’t know me and I didn’t ask you for your vote. You should leave the verification process to people who actually know me I don’t need your random vote. If you want to compare blackbelts we can I’ve competed at the blackbelt level and stood on the IBJJF podium. I have no idea who you are but you seem to be an internet troll you’re more than welcome to come visit me and I can show you how legit my blackbelt is. I’m also registered under the IBJJF (which you are not) so I don’t really need validation from some random like you.

Yup, you missed that it says brown belt division.

Have you got any idea what pan ams he would be talking about if it's in New Jersey? Brown belt never the less.

Jimmy, do you yourself not agree that your instructor has submitted information on Beltchecker which would invalidate your promotion history claims if true? You could still be a BB but under a more senior BB, who signed the documents to IBJJF, but that organization is not transparent at all with what they have based their registration on (besides several cases where they have made errors or knowingly acted against the standards they themselves claim never to make exceptions from). I suspect that is the case here, with Chuck Anzalone (4:th degree registered with IBJJF) or some other senior BB being your real promoting instructor (what did it say on the forms you sent in to IBJJF prior to being registered?). If you change your promotion history to reflect that, submit good evidence of it and remove your BS revenge vote, I'll gladly up vote you if the lineage checks out.

According to IBJJF:s BB register, your promoting instructor Samer Marji is still a no degree BB, which is consistent with the info on his profile that he was a brown belt still in 2020. If he completes his Beltcheckers profile and claims to have stripes on his BB, will you be consistent with the revenge vote on me and down vote your own promoting instructor for claiming a degree on BB for which he isn't registered with IBJJF?

Chill dude, we can see you are the big bad. The whole point of this site is for people who may or may not know you to validate you.

If you want to know the guide lines on voting they are here: https://www.beltchecker.c[...]rification

Instead of offering Johan a fight to see how legit a black belt is, why not offer some info on the points that have been raised?

No-Gi Pan Ams used to be in New York. Maybe that helps.
Seems right! So NJ should be NY. Also, I only find him in the result list for 2008, but for purple, not for brown. Also, a silver medal, not gold, as it says on Samer's profile. See https://ibjjf.com/events/[...]ampionship

I checked the years in between too and he got a silver medal in the master 1 brown belt division in 2010. See https://ibjjf.com/events/[...]ampionship . As mentioned, he was still a brown belt in june 2011, according to his own FB updates. See https://www.facebook.com/[...]amp;type=3

So still no way Samer was a 2:nd degree BB at the claimed BB promotion date of Jimmy in 2015. Also, Jimmy has made clear in his revenge vote on me that he doesn't recognize degrees which are not recognized by IBJJF, so he shouldn't recognize his own promoting instructor as more than a no degree black belt in that case.

Jimmy, no one is questioning your skills, but you must yourself admit that with the info available to us now, you wouldn't had been approved by IBJJF either. Which makes me believe it is not the same info you gave IBJJF (and if you did, it wouldn't help to tell them "you’re more than welcome to come visit me and I can show you how legit my blackbelt is", would it?).

Dude you vote your way he voted his. that is how the site works.. You seem to be the only one who feels they are being revenge voted. I have to agree I find your stripe history a little unusual but odd things happen

As to Jimmy I don't know his actual belt history but can tell you he is legit Black Belt level.. I was involved in the NY / NJ scene for years and have seen him compete including at Black Belt level

Same with Samer everyone in the area knows him and he runs a great school that produces MMA fighters and grapplers .. I don't know the details of his belts.

Downvote if you want just don't get twisted when someone points out an oddity in yours afterwards

He seems like a nice guy. He admits he was sentenced for espionage but he said he was never a traitor plus they released him early.
He also used his courtroom experience when he helped us (you and me) to interrogate the daughter of that other ex-marine who had real skills but an imaginary black belt from imaginary friends.
Chuck is our online friend. He helps us catch the bad online guys.

Thank you for pointing out! No, I didn't remember and I only searched Beltchecker for Chuck, so I missed him. Don't think I had heard about the espionage business back then, but with the early release, it does not appear to be Lloyd Irvin or Amit Hakim level stuff anyways. I'm also open to new impressions of Chuck. So with what I know now, I still stand by my verification.

As I wrote earlier in the thread: "I suspect [...] Chuck Anzalone (4:th degree registered with IBJJF) or some other senior BB being your real promoting instructor (what did it say on the forms you sent in to IBJJF prior to being registered?). Edit: I also was notified of an old discussion over personal messages, where I got some additional info on Chuck which made me lean towards simply not voting in any direction there. So might modify my stance.

Johan i think you're ready to get your sixt degree Black belt in Dramajitsu....

I personaly don't have the time and energy to search like you do, so your implication in the belt checking can be a great value.

But step by step you become one of the most hated person in bjj community, maybe release a little bit the pressure.... here, there seems to be an miss understanding on degrees, but the guy seems to be 100% legit Black belt and lineage, who make his proof in competition... i'm most concern by true fraudes who didn't have the skills anf hide themselves in their gym and self graduated

If someone actually hates me because I strongly believe in applying objectively reviewable minimum criteria when belt checking, I would recommend that person to go see a shrink. I wonder if the IBJJF employees getting paid to review belt certification applications too get told that they are the most hated persons in the BJJ community, after hindering a seemingly 100% legit someone's verification based on similar formal criteria or expectations of documentation.

I believe I have always been very explicit about the way I vote and have also tried to be very transparent, consistent and objective about it. To the degree that I've even down voted team members and students of instructors i know personally for not having put in the effort of actually providing evidence. And on several occasions also up voted persons who have right out insulted me. That's the integrity in relation to objective criteria that I'm striving for. I have also discussed on several occasions how I believe this brings value to the community, by giving the world a better and more trustworthy alternative to IBJJF belt certifications. I believe I'm acting according to what the idea was when Beltchecker was founded in the first place. If that makes someone hate, that problem is really not with me.

For some interesting discussions on advantages of using rule based assessments and relying on objective criteria over personal expert judgments, I really recommend reading e.g. Noise - A Flaw in Human Judgment by Kahneman, Sibony and Sunstein. It may actually open up some new thoughts and further understanding instead of hating.

At the end of the day, people get to choose how they spend/waste their time - and it's all subjective. There's also cause and effect, which doesn't care about fairness or "justice" most of the time. Spend your time as you wish, Johan - but also know that other people will spend theirs with revenge/down voting. I personally chose to waste a couple mins writing this post to remind people - choose your time wisely. I don't see a lot of value in spending MY time on such trivial matters.

We all know what your criteria are and most of us have no issues with them once we understand where you're coming from. But in this case it isn't your voting. You are actively campaigning against someone whose skills seem to be on par with the rank they hold based on the votes of people who have actually trained with them. Not only are you actively campaigning against this person, but you are doing so by digging three layers deep into their lineage to discredit the legitimacy of their belt. It was sufficient to downvote the person and explain your reasoning there. Responding to a revenge voter by starting a revenge thread to actively encourage others to downvote them is a little much.

You're very inflexible in being willing to understand legitimate reasons why people may not have the evidence you deem credible, and ignore other things that most people do consider credible.

Also, to answer your question, yes the IBJJF are absolutely loathed for not accepting ranks in a timely fashion and preventing people competing at their proper rank.

The real world is messy, but messy doesn't equal illegitimate. Some people don't want their pictures plastered online, people fall out with past coaches, people promote with sign off from a more distant hierarchy. You should consider these things when people don't have exactly what you think they should have, but obviously have the skill.

In my opinion, no order combat sport is remotely close to the proficiency in submissions that BJJ is. Therefore, it would be extremely odd for someone to be able to submit BJJ black belts of the same age and weight, without having had legitimate training in BJJ.

You must have heard of e.g. Masahiko Kimura, Rufino Dos Santos or Kazushi Sakuraba! BJJ isn't the only grappling art around. It's just as much about how you train and pressure test your grappling as well as the individual grappler.

I can be very flexible in willing to understand legitimate reasons why someone doesn't have evidence of their promotions. You know it IS possible to both understand this and having set voting criteria by which that results in a down vote. It also is possible to be a Beltchecker member but standing outside the voting system, for those wishing to do so (just remove a previous belt and your profile becomes unvoteable).

You really did not answer any question on IBJJF, as you preferred to kick in open doors with criticizing them for practices which have nothing to do with anything more than their money grab scheme. Something I also criticize them for on a regular basis.

As it says in the Beltchecker FAQ: "Having community members verify or refute the documented information based on their own criteria allows the community to determine the standard to which documentation will be held.".

Do you really think it's unreasonable to expect "documented information", as mentioned in the FAQ, in order not to refute?

Or having stricter than average criteria to which you hold documentation? Criteria which is used objectively and with integrity, no matter if they're fellow locals, team mates etc.

It's not really "stricter than average", it's just stupid to ask someone for a photo that doesn't exist. What exactly are you demanding, that they get in a time machine and make sure a certain moment was photographed otherwise you'll refuse to acknowledge it happened.

You know there is a third option for you, just don't vote for some people. You don't actually have to downvote people, you could just do nothing.

I have to disagree.

There is nothing stupid there, if you ask for some kind of evidence. A person providing no evidence at all shouldn't get voted for. Reality is, it happens, even if there is neither a picture of the actual promotion, nor a diploma and no confirmation from a coach. To me a downvote is appropriate in such a situation.

In the end, this thing is called belt checker, not lets confirm everything based on hearsay.

You can just as well say "it's just stupid to ask some one for checking a belt while providing nothing that can be checked. What exactly are you demanding, that they get in a time machine and make sure to see a certain moment with their own eyes otherwise you should just step out of the way and let members who up vote anything with a profile have the only voice of the BJJ community on the matter?"

Why would anyone then ever bother with uploading evidence to Beltchecker, if evidence can be refuted but no evidence can't?

Some people get their belts by sleeping with their promoting instructor, you're just picking the most autistic interpretation of what a belt is.

That's why most people verify people they know, based on mat experience.
